Join me on a very cold and windy winter camp in Snowdonia. On this trip I hike/scramble to a beautiful small llyn tucked away in the mountains, cook up a nice meal and get a warm sleep with my new winter sleep system. The tent also gets its first real test in some strong winds on this camp. I wasn’t taking any chances trusting the forecast on this trip so I double pole the tent for good measure and it handled the wind with no issues. Hope you enjoy the video.

I just had to laugh when, at one point in the cooking process, the caption reads " simmer on a low heat for around seven minutes". That is the sort of thing you would hear on a Gordon Ramsey video in a fully equipped 5-star kitchen. And you are doing it in a space of about 2 square feet. On your knees!! With a bloody gale gusting inches from your flame . I absolutely love the cooking part of your videos. Awesome!!! Take a bow!!!!!

😂👍 I always really enjoy the cooking portion of my camps when the weather isn’t the best outside. I get so focused on what I’m doing that I am able to take my mind off the weather. I was pretty lucky the winds calmed down a lot during my cooking though, or I just didn’t notice it as much 😂. Really appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend.

Llyn Bach (small lake). A fantastic camping spot, and secluded and quiet too. Another wonderful video, have admired your filming style for a while. Simple and effective. Everything that's great about a great camping video; taking the time filming the location and getting a sense of the place, seeing your camp equipment, and of course; the food (no freeze-dried nonsense here!). Oh, and refreshingly no music! Well done, a joy to watch. Da iawn, dal a ti.

Really appreciate the feedback. I try to capture the entire camp the best I can. It’s nice to give a feel for the area. Especially when it’s as pretty as this. I also really enjoy how secluded this area feels. Both times I’ve been up here I’ve managed to not see any other people which is always nice! Thanks for the comment. Hope you have a great week. ATB

Fantastic video, the production quality is excellent, seamless blend of both hiking & camping too. Love seeing your cooking too rather than a boil in the bag meal, spending that long at camp, why would you not want to take some decent food along! Seeing how you manage to get so much gear in the 45L bag makes me wonder what on earth others are taking with a 60-70L Rucksack. Really excellent content!

Thanks! On these long winter nights making a nice meal not only gives me something to do but it’s also really nice to eat something that’s not been rehydrated. A bit more work but worth it in my opinion for just a single overnight camp. I was pretty happy I could fit everything into this 45L pack. I definitely have to cram it in but it works. Also makes it a lot easier to hike/scramble with than my larger pack. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you’re having a nice weekend. ATB

Great video. I`v been in the swedish mountains for 40 years now.Mostly because i`m a flyfishing nerd. Many nights in tents..cooking and sleeping...Hilleberg is good stuff and Fjällräven and Trangia. If you are dry...warm and not hungry it`s a great experience to be in the mountains. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.

@@GoingSoloOutdoors I'm fishing in mountains lakes in Alps. Altitude is about 2000/2500m but it's the same landscape than your Snowdonia. I looked a lot of video about winter camping in UK. You're very courageous to camp in these conditions : wind, rain, melt snow, humid air etc. I camped a lot in mountains but never with all these conditions in the same moment. I must change this year my old tent. It will be a hilleberg tent. Probably the soulo tent even unna seems good.

Double poled with standard AND 10mm poles! That’s one rock steady tent 💪🏼 Great area, snowdonia has a real wild feel to it. And I did not know the trangia gas burner sat in the triangle!! 🤩
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
I was very happy with how the Unna performed in the wind 👍. The extra poles are great but the additional guy lines definitely helped. The triangle is a pretty versatile lightweight stand. Love using it with the gas burner when I’m looking for more control over the cooking temp. Snowdonia definitely has a wild look to it but parking can be a bit challenging compared to the Lake District.

The amount of work that goes into these "solo" videos...the amount of setup and back tracking to make a coherent visual narrative is amazing and completely underappreciated. It's like 3X the effort of just going on the hike. Also, can we just say....how great is that Hilleberg "sand" colored fly? Okay sure...there are reasons to have a "blaze orange" tent....but that Hilleberg sand color blending in with things is just sublime!!
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
👍😀 Thank you! It definitely takes a bit of effort but I’ve come to really enjoy getting to relive these trips again when I get back home and begin editing. I end up hiking a bit more but it’s worth it. I completely agree about the sand color. That’s probably why I haven’t even considered giving the other colors a shot. It just blends in so incredibly well with the landscape in both the winter and summer. Probably not what you want in on expedition but for these overnight camps I’m happy to no standout from a distance. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you’re having a nice week! ATB

I was just thinking about the colour of this tent. It looks very co-ordinated with the scenery but would be so hard to find you in an emergency.
@neologian1783
@neologian1783 4 ай бұрын
@@MGE9436 Yeah....very true. But then again in 30 years of backpacking I'm trying to think of a single time my tent fly color could have made the difference either in finding my own tent again or finding me and I honestly can't think of one. I've never been so far off trail from camp that finding my tent again was an issue. As for finding me, the times that I could have taken a spill and needed help I was away from home base skiing or day hiking and sorta away from my tent. Not that that kind of emergency can't or doesn't exist and that a bright fly might assist rescuers...but in terms of my own real world activities I sorta like having less of a visual impact on the landscape. Pictures and promo photos of a bright orange tent on snow are neat.....but there's something about looking at a hillside and needing a moment to notice a human being has made camp on it somewhere.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
@@MGE9436 I agree. I choose this color intentionally to blend in. Once I setup camp I am not hiking away from it. They make these tents in red as well which would be better for expeditions. Especially if you were planning to use your tent as a base camp and set it up a do day trips away from it 👍

Thats a fab set up with the Unna and the double poles, but the weight of 275g fro each extra pole brings the total close to the weight of a Nammatj 2. You are so right about changing the guy line angle as it makes such a difference. Picked up this video from your Instagram by the way.. Best wishes and thank you for a great video... Tom.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
Taking the smallest pack possible (45L), was my priority because of the scrambles I would be doing on route. The Nammatj just doesn’t pack down quite as small. I also wasn’t sure what the terrain would look like up here, so I wanted the smaller footprint and a freestanding tent. I was actually also planning on leaving the 9 mm poles in the car. But as I was driving to Snowdonia, the wind forecast just kept increasing so I put them in at the last minute. Knowing the weather and what the location actually looks like now I would have tried to bring the Nammatj instead if I could’ve still fit it in the pack. Hindsight is always 20 20 👍. I’m definitely happy I got to see what the Unna can do though! Thanks for watching Tom. ATB

I am still a little bummed about the sleeping pad. I’m not sure what’s going on but with such a high R value I was hoping it would perform like a furnace 😂. I know the rating system isn’t great, but I definitely wasn’t expecting to experience any cool spots. More testing is needed and I will probably talk about it in my next camp as well. The sleeping bag on the other hand is perfect. It looks absolutely ridiculous (not the earth tone I typically prefer either) but wow is it warm and comfortable. That was a serious scramble up. Buff Headgear is something worth considering, multiple configurations for covering neck, ears, head, cheeks, nose - it's a piece of gear is always have with me summer or winter. They make lighter/thinner fabric Headgear for summer which can be wetted to provide evaporation for cooling, heavier/thicker fabric for warmth in colder temperatures. A partial - full face balaclava configuration would be ideal for the cold/wind you experienced on the way up. 15:10; I would have looked for & placed big heavy rocks atop the tent pegs. 20:00 You just now donned your Buff Headgear just around your neck. To this day I prefer center/top zippers on a sleeping bag instead of right side or left side zippers. 35:45; I see you added some big heavy rocks atop the tent pegs. 45:45; repacking my backpack is always a time consuming & challenging task. Hilleberg has thought of everything when designing their tents - sleeves large enough so the shelter can be double poled. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

I absolutely love my Buff 👍. Come with me on every trip and was particularly useful in the morning to cover my face. It was surprisingly hard to find loose rocks up here that were small enough to lift and not frozen to the ground. These rocks I had to get from the flowing stream coming off the llyn. The top zip is really great. I absolutely love every Hilleberg tent I own. Incredibly reliable with a fantastic attention to detail. Really appreciate the thoughtful comment as always

@@GoingSoloOutdoors One of the "details" with all Hilleberg tents that rarely get mentioned are the zippers which are YKK "COIL" instead of teeth - smoother & they're not as likely to snag as a "teeth" type of zipper AND the "zipper tie down toggle" for keeping the zipper from unzipping during strong gusty windy conditions.

Yes the size I have is a bit tight on my head. Especially if I haven’t had a haircut in a while 😆. But I do like it snug for that reason. Typically it stays on even in the wind 👍. Though, a couple years ago in Snowdonia a gust took it off my head and it landed in the lake. Fortunately the wind blew it back to the shore and I was able to get it back. I would have been gutted if I lost it! It has become a bit of a good luck charm on my trips 👍. Really appreciate the comment!

@@GoingSoloOutdoorsHi, I paddled solo in sea kayak from Arnhem (The Netherlands) to Spain by the Atlantic ocean. So I camped on countless remote beaches, rocky shores and little islands. Those places often don´t offer much natural protection against the elements and I have seen some pretty intense storms. But no sweat for the Unna! I did not double poled it, but I did use the 10mm poles of the Staika, which are suitable for the Unna as well. And -most important I guess- I doubled the amount of guylines. In addition I brought two sets of snow/sand stakes and also both inner tents ( the normal and the mosquito one) to adapt to the changing season. And also a footprint (sharp rocks...) I enjoyed seeing you in these strong winds in the Unna.

Really nice video thanks, with some useful tips. Had my BeFree freeze a fortnight ago so having ordered a new filter. Hadn’t thought of inverting my water bottles! With the Unna I do find it really difficult pitching just at the moment when the poles go into their cups and the tent arches upwards - very vulnerable to a gust of wind. I never open the zipper from the bottom, but half way up - I step through into the tent. It saves having door fabric swirling in the dirt or needing to furl it.

Thanks! I agree, that can definitely be a vulnerable moment with the tent but no issues thus far. Definitely one of the benefits of the models that have the clips like my Soulo. I absolutely love my Nammatj 2 and Unna. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those choices you listed. It just depends which features are most important to you. I think the Nallo 2 might be a good choice because you get the wind stability and space of the Nammatj but it’s similar in weight to the Unna. So that might be a nice compromise between the two. Whatever choice you makes I think you will love it 👍. Hope that helps. Really appreciate your support! ATB

Another great video. The way you camp is a huge inspiration to me as I don't get out as much as I would like and why not make the best meal you can with this precious time. Fantastic location with epic views that had its challenges to obtain makes me want to push further.

Good to see you back out. Incredible views. Touchy place up and back down. The Hestra gloves? are they wool lined or acrylic? Swimming hole, heck yeah. Nordic tradition, bust it wide open. Hilleberg time. Some cold and winter winds. The 10mm will hold it but since you have the 9's good idea to just use them.. No doubts about it then. I do the same with my Jannu. Much enjoyed. Kind of outer jacket you wear? Take care.

Good to be back out! Yes, these are the Hestra Falt Guide Gloves. They are wool lined and the wool inserts easily come out so you can dry them or use the gloves without them. I agree, I think the 10mm poles alone would have been fine. Because the forecasted winds kept consistently increasing as I got closer and closer to the day I was camping I just figured I’d have the 9mm poles with me as well since I don’t trust the weather here in Snowdonia. I’ve been blindsided by terrible winds here too many times. I’m wearing the Fjallraven Keb Jacket. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!

Hoping to get out in next few days. Ity's been spring to summer weather all winter here in Kentucky. It'd crazy. Some storms and cold coming for the next week. I'll see@@GoingSoloOutdoors
