I've often felt like Gojira songs sound like giant monsters. Like giant monsters emerging from some ancient sleep in the sea or haunted ass jungle marching toward some totally fucked village. The songs Flying Whales and Wolf Down the Earth are perfect examples. The name Gojira probably has something to do with this, but the songs sound so effing BIG!
@Metaljonus

Fun Fact: They were originally formed as Godzilla in 1996, they changed their name to Gojira(Japanese way of saying "Godzilla") in 2001. But yeah... they pretty much stand behind the name!

To me Gojira is simply the best. They are most creative during any song they play. The breakdowns are second to none never boring and expect the unexpected. Why they aren't more popular could be because their tours are light in the US and spread out. I hope this band can stay together for years to come because they are special.

Alcest - Oiseaux de Proie Another great french metal band. They started this genre which mix black metal with shoegaze. At the beginning it was a one man band where Neige played every fuckin instrument and did the entire recording processing. Then it's become an actual band during the years. This is one of the Alcest's latest track, a masterpiece in my opinion. Greets from Italy, keep up this good job, you're awesome!

Now listen to Devin Townsend's song 'Sumeria' featuring Joe from Gojira and Paul Masvidal of Cynic. There are tons and tons of collaborations in metal, but it isn't normally put in the song title like you see with some other genres. Generally it's just in the notes in the CD/Vinyl booklet.

Alice Cooper had several interesting collaberations (Slash, Twisted Sister etc.); Aerosmith with RUN DMC is cool... In metal often when artists cooperate, they found a new group (e.g. Unisonic). And then there are many projects like Avantasia or Ayreon where many artists work togehther. Please check out Ayreon Loser or Day 11: Love. Prog rock that also sounds good.

Definitely tons of collaborations in metal - there's a tradition for it dating back at least as far as the thrash era, where getting a guest vocalist from another band to perform on one or two songs wasn't too unusual. Spotting a guest vocalist or guitarist in a band's lineup was part of the fun. You still get that today, where spotting (for example) Tarja, Ihsahn, James Murphy, Michael Amott, Chris Niederweiser, or Tom Warrior in a guest performance with another of your favorite bands - or in a band you've never heard of before - is always a treat. It's almost too common to bother mentioning these days, except as click-bait! A lot of metal albums were sold based on better-known musicians who left their main band - even temporarily - to work with a lesser-known band, the record producers would be sure to put a sticker or label on the album for one of those lesser-known bands letting you know "with the legendary guitarist/vocalist/whatever of [insert band here]" to try to piggy-back on the better-known band's fame. Megadeth was formed in something of that manner from Metallica, for example, and carried a built-in audience from Metallica to Megadeth; Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy were essentially spin-offs of Sepultura, Apollyon Sun and Triptykon were spin-offs from Celtic Frost (which itself was a rebuilt Hellhammer), Lucyfire was a spin-off of Tiamat.... I specifically remember Sarcofago albums being sold on the strength of having Sepultura's original vocalist, Cancer and Disincarnate albums beings sold on the strength of James Murphy's name, The Undead's albums being sold with a label mentioning members of The Misfits being behind it, etc. There's also spin-off and side-project bands, that work in much the same way, often as collaborations between members of multiple bands. A lot of Swedish death metal worked that way: pick up a random Swedish death metal band from the 1990s, and chances are you would find it's one or two members of Entombed and Dismember kit-bashed together randomly with guys from a couple other bands from the same city. Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D.) are the guys from Nuclear Assault, M.O.D., and Anthrax kit-bashed together, Brujeria were at various times the members of Fear Factory, the Dead Kennedys, Faith No More, and a half-dozen other bands playing together on various songs and albums, Nailbomb were a collaboration between members of Sepultura and Fudge Tunnel, Arcturus was a supergroup formed from members of a handful of Norwegian bands.... In short, the collaboration thing is a huge part of metal, and sometimes it even gets advertised in the way that the guys from Lost in Vegas suggest, but it seems to work best by word-of-mouth: I think the audience for it tends to trust word-of-mouth more than advertising.

I can hear the Devin Townsend influence from the first bar. He has so much range and diversity; he's one of those artists that you really have to give a few chances to get the full picture. He's also an AMAZEBALLS singer in the conventional way too. Did he also produce this?

thisismyotherleg I thought the walls sounded pretty thick and heavy but I am listening on a cell phone to a recording of a recording, hehehe... I actually have a hard time digesting Devin's music most of the time. I actually am not a fan of the "wall of sound." I prefer lots of nuance and balance and woven layers, not slathered on thick like he does. I kind of giggle/cringe at the mental image of what his pro tools session looks like.... 582 tracks, then doubled.... lmao! But some of the songs are so dang good and his voice is so amazing that I can overlook that. My hubby is a bigger fan of him than I am.
