You need to look at this performance in historical context. This segment represented the bloodiest part of the French Revolution, the people fighting to overthrow the Aristocracy to become a REPUBLIC. Violence for freedom. Metal is quintessentially in the spirit of this moment. Gojira, and the rawness, and aggression would have been perfect in that pivotal time in history. Metal, would have been the soundtrack. Making it part of Olympic opening, representing France was ICONIC. I lived in Paris, this is one of the most French things I've ever seen.!! Magnificent.

Proud 50 years old French female here, not much in metal (i play harp ) but i occasionnally listen to some,... am online gamer too, and i thought this was EEEEEEPIIIIc !! Metal music and Assassin Creed, an opera singer and the french revolution all wrapped in one single package....fucking proud !! As a people, we are always complaining and winning about everything , people love to hate us and we love to hate the english ha ha, but we don't give a rat's ass about who is offended by what, and especially religious people. We paid already a huge price in blood for that but we keep pushing. In my heart, this is a huge tribute to all the victims who died just because they were sitting in a bar or attending a heavy metal concert. You can see beheaded people at the windows. This castle is la Conciergerie, the prison where political opponents awaited their execution by guillotine. The ship is on the city of Paris' coat-of-arms with the motto "fluctuat nec mergitur", meaning the ship is in a storm but will not sink. It is a symbol of resilience. The "blood" is made of small pieces of paper. The opera singer is a metalhead, she was the singer of several local metal bands before starting an opera singer career. Amazing performance! 🖤🤘

Actualy the castel was a french jail during revolution in 1790. It is in this prison that the revolutionaries locked up the nobles. Marie Anoinette(the girl in start of the song, last queen of france) was one of then before she was decapitated with guillotine by revolutionaries. Don't know if my english is good. The coolest thing is that it’s not even their label or manager that reached to the organisers. The organisers and the art director are Gojira fans and just directly asked them if they would play at the ceremony and Gojira was like “hell yeah”, and the coolest thing is that they did it for free, no pay. Same thing for Lady Gaga and Céline Dion, they all played for free, no pay. (At the same time playing at the Olympics brings a lot of attention and new fans).

Hello from France guys, she is an opera singer who has long made metal that she loves for information. The French networks pushed for Gojira who is our international emblem for all these technical and creative characteristics to be at the ceremony. Our mainstream only highlighted Aya Nakamura who does not have at all in France the reputation that she claims internationally. The picture that Gojira illustrates with the intro which is a call to the people to behead is very current. We are very very unhappy with this government that despises us and I hoped that Gojira would pass but until the last days, I did not know. Regarding the red streamers, its a unique material that gives it a look of blood and i believe it acts like a dye on certain materials( just a guess, not familiar with this stuff). That was a nod to France's history where people risked and lost their lives fighting for freedom. The castle is where the princess was imprisoned at and beheaded. Freedom was extremely important in France and what they did was show what freedom gave France to the entire world: a right of choice.

Actually, it wasn't exactly Gojira - it was Gojira WITH opera singer Marina Viotti AND Orchestre de Paris (this philharmonic orchestra out of the scope of the cameras). It's the combo that makes the piece epic. "Ah, ça ira ! Les aristocrates à la lanterne, on les pendra" means "It will be fine ! We will HANG the aristocrats at the street light [posts]." This intro before Gojira actually kicks in is a French Revolution popular song - except by the time Marie Antoinette was condemned to death, Doctor Guillotin had invented the guillotine, in hope to make the execution less painful than hanging. Ah, no actual blood was used in the show!

La performance de Gojira dans un lieu aussi symbolique que le Château de la Conciergerie est une grande claque d'intelligence, de connaissance politique et historique donnée au Monde entier... PS: sais-tu que Gojira est impliqué dans des mouvements socio-écologistes visant à protéger la biodiversité et les peuples autochtones pour leur survie ? Oui, ils ont besoin de fric pour mener à bien leurs combats ... cela n'en fait pas pour autant des capitalistes !

@@Axclamp : Pourquoi ?! Parce qu'ils se sont montrés à la télé ?? Parce qu'ils ont reçu une offre de vitrine mondiale afin de faire glorifier le Metal parmi d'autres musiques donnant ainsi une reconnaissance à tous les metalleux ??? Pour avoir su créer un titre original sur base de faits historiques qui ont défini la Révolution et l''identité française républicaine, prouvant par là que les metalleux ne sont pas des abrutis et peuvent mêler scénographie, histoire et composition originale (contrairement à la plupart des autres artistes ce soir là) ??? ...Allons, qui ne rêverait pas d'avoir une telle opportunité dans mettre plein la face au Monde entier avec une aussi grande audience pour faire rayonner son pays et son genre musical (souvent méprisé par les médias) ??? D'autant que cela permet de gagner d'autres fans, non pas pour forcément gagner plus de fric, mais de pouvoir diffuser les messages socio-environnementaux au plus grand nombre... Ne vois pas tout à travers ta frustration de "priviligié" (genre. "moi, je les connaissais avant blablabla.. quand ils n'étaient pas connu blablabla... maintenant ils se prennent pour des stars blablabla... c'était mieux avant que ma concierge ne les connaissent blablabla" !) ; c'est un raisonnement puéril ! PS : ils n'ont gagné aucun fric lors de cette cérémonie.. c'était une prestation gratuite !
