Great reaction. I really like Gojira. They are known for their hypnotic riffs. And their drummer is an absolute beast, no doubt.

Fully agree about Meshuggah ! Especially at the beginnings of Gojira, maybe less today. But I'm still pretty sure it was their main influence at start. PS : Meshuggah, the first band I played along on the drums at a friend's (Destroy Erase Improve album). I did not choose the easiest and still can't play it quite right lol

Loving me some Gojira! Why? Well their sound is unique. The vocals are full on, loud and rough. The instrumentals are both precise and relentless. And there's that groove. You put all that together and you know who you're listening to. Great reaction! Oh yeah 1st!

Also, any Gojira song is good to react to. But overall I would say that it is a must to listen to Flying Whales AND The Art of Dying, since they are probably Gojira's best songs and are very popular among the fans. For full album... It's either From Mars To Sirius (which is a masterpiece) or The Way Of All Flesh I'd say you better do a full reaction to From Mars To Sirius since it is a concept album and it's going to make a lot more sense for a reaction. Cheers brother

If you like tech death, another French band to check out is Gorod. They're not exactly ground breaking in the tech death scene, but a bit more melodic than a lot of tech death. I would start with Programmers of Decline from the album Process Of A New Decline, or Birds of Sulphur from the album A Perfect Absolution. For Meshuggah, their sound has changed a lot over the years. For their earlier thrashier sound I would go with Ritual (from None) or Future Breed Machine or maybe Vanished (from Destroy Erase Improve). From there I'd go with New Millennium Cyanide Christ or Neurotica (from Chaosphere). Then to their albums that kicked off the djent movement, Straws Pulled At Random (from Nothing) or Shed (from Catch Thirtythr33). For more modern sound from them, everyone suggests Bleed because of the relentless drums (from Obzen), other good choices are The Demon's Name Is Surveillance or The Hurt That Finds You First (from Kloss) and Born in Dissonance (from The Violent Sleep of Reason).

It took me a little while to get into Gojira, too. I had to find some of their more straight-forward stuff to learn what their sound was about. Now I really like them, but prefer the last four albums over the older stuff. Favorite tracks are Silvera, Art of Dying, Born in Winter, Amazonia, Another World, Pray.

Recent Gojira is like if Tool had babies with old Sepultura They're a bit odd in that they write incredibly aggressive songs about being one with the trees. They're very much like Tool in that the songs are _very_ well put together, i hate the phrase "heavy yet melodic" because it get's overused but most Gojira really is, particularly their older stuff which is much more death metal-ish rather than groove metal like the more recent albums are but are still melodic as fuck.

Gojira comes from death metal but quickly found their own unique sound. Joe ( vocals/lead guitar ) and Mario ( drums ) are brothers.interesting fact : same line-up for more than 20 years !!! these guys are the best france has to offer in metal .my suggestions ( from older to newest ) : "clone" , "remembrance"(live from the Link dvd) ,"the heaviest matter of the universe" , "flying whales" ,"toxic garbage island" , "the art of dying", "l'enfant sauvage" , "explosia" , "stranded" ,"pray" (live at red rock) , "born for one thing" and "amazonia" ....would be a good start !!!

Love the reaction to Gojira, please do more, they're absolutely incredible! They usually write their songs starting from Mario Duplantier's (the drummer) ideas and then build it up from there so him and his brother Joe Duplantier (the singer) write the bulk of the songs. I would recommend the Art of Dying for some intricate drum work, and Flying Whales (arguably their most popular song). If you want to react to some insane riffage from their earlier work, songs like Wisdom Comes (Live at Brixton), Clone and Remembrance (The Link Alive performance) do the trick for me. Their entire discography is really brilliant and there's a lot to explore with Gojira, especially with their last 2 albums (Magma and Fortitude) as they do tone down their technical death metal side a fair bit, but they're still incredible nonetheless.

Same for me mate, always been listening to metal, but I'm getting more into it since my 30's as they do some progressive sometimes psychelic sound. With the age, my brain and ears enjoy that more. I also love postrock nowadays, which is an atmospheric style usually. Keep rediscover Gojira, you can check Pray, live extended version at Red Rocks If you wanna check some other French metal, what is very famous since 15 years could be Mass Hysteria. However, most of the bands are singing of french, and probably that's the reason why it's not very exported. You could check Mass Hysteria - L'enfer des dieux live The title means "The hell of the Gods" or "The Gods' hell"

I really liked the Gojira album From Mars to Sirius, but for some reasons I could not get into the other albums. At the time I listened to them, I was not vibing with their specific brand of complexity in their later albums, so I kind of forgot about them. The vocals and drums are also my favorites. I need to give them a deeper listen again. Sometimes, as you say, it clicks later.
