I competed in one of the very first Iri Kumi competitions. It was the forerunner to mma but no one really understood that at the time. Takedowns, locks, throws, grappling everything was allowed except punches to the face and groin strikes. My instructor was Joe Kearns, a very underrated Go Ju Ryu practitioner, from Liverpool, who in my humble opinion was one of the best Practitioners of that type of Karate in the country. The training under Joe was very practical and orientated towards practical self-defense and his application of the techniques was very unusual. I will give you an eg: we were practicing blocks against a punch and I was doing really well and controlling Joe's strikes to an ok standard. Joe then turned round and said '' you are pretty good at deflecting my punches'' which was a very good compliment coming from Joe. He then turned around and said let's see if they are as effective as you think. He then went into the kitchen, we used to train in a community center, and he came out with a serrated kitchen knife at least 8 inches long. He said I am going to really lunge at you and I want you to do the exact same technique. Well, I turned around and said '' hold on I am not going to do that block against a kitchen knife'', he said well go on and do what you would do in real life. I then proceeded to pick up a chair that dotted the walls and said go on attack me now. Joe turned around and said there you go that's what real life is all about. He was a great Karate man and i learned a lot of practical applications from him that helped me in a couple of sticky situations. Cheers.

Estemed Kyoshi Paul Coleman, Even after more than 30 years in sportin Goju-ryu Karate, I have reeally enjoyed your approch to close-in fighting. What I missed, may be it is Part Two of your presentation , is defence against leg attacks!. As you well know, close- in fight comes only after having evaded or alleviated, or even eliminated leg attacks!! Students of self defence will be interested in your opinion on the issue? Best regards, Paul, 65, retired instructor of Goju-ryu Karate.

This is great but it doesn't look like any Goju ryu / Goju kai I've ever done. Is this a relatively new emphasis? If it is I'm impressed.

Thank you for your comment. When my father teaches he always states that there is never only one application. One move can be many many different things. He takes elements from traditional Goju and tends to add his own ideas to make it interesting. Thank you once again for your comment

@@trainingwithaaroncoleman9529 Good. Karate should improvise for the time. I am a pure Goju Ryu karateka at heart. When I could not get it where I moved... I took shotokan for about 2 years. NOT THE SAME. I do NOT like Shotokan. Too linear. Over extension etc. While in Shotokan... I did competitions too. So the shotokan clubs and a Goju Kai club. I found Goju Kai strange. Always thought it was the same as Goju Ryu. It is not. There katas had changes to it. So strange. Should there be a difference or could it be that clubs sensei? Now to the main part... why I commented. Due to MMA and so MANY other styles out there, we cannot take karate as it was before. Karate was made for self defense. So most fights were in the street and USUALLY the other person had no training. Karate worked great. Today... another story. Most people you get into contact with had some sort of training. Boxing, karate, wrestling, Judo, Ju-jitsu and MMA. If you end up on the ground as a karateka... you lost the fight. Most karateka has the notion that NOBODY will take them to the ground. (Then they end up on the ground). Now you must seriously understand. I do NOT want Goju Ryu or Shotokan to change completely. Just incorporate some defenses into them for these kind of situations. So. Do NOT change karate. Let it grow. The main point is stand up fighting. By no means do I say become MMA. Just ADD to karate to have some kind of defense on the ground. If I was a sensei, I would for instance get a Ju-jitsu guy or a wrestler (who is quite good) to train with us one day. Show the karateka's that they CAN be taken down. Then just show them some defensive ground work. Adding that knowledge to Karate. What do you think?
@trainingwithaaroncoleman95293 жыл бұрын
@@mizmera I totally agree with what you are saying my friend. Every martial art has its strengths and weaknesses. You wouldn’t get a boxer to grapple with a BJJ guy would you? However my father also did 11 years of judo so he’s pretty good on the ground as well as stand up. He also won 3 world championships in his prime in Iri kumi continuous fighting. I agree though. Karate is amazing for stand up and even for stand up grappling but when it gets to the floor moves are limited however having an instructor with extensive knowledge gets rid of that weakness. Thank you so much for your input. Wish you all the best in your training
