I was 14 in 1999 when this scene first aired on Toonami. A month earlier I had a diving accident that left me a near quadriplegic and was still in the hospital recovering and learning how to walk again. I would be in therapy for hours each day, but always made sure to watch DBZ. The day this episode aired, I had a really rough day and regressed a few steps in my physical therapy and I was extremely depressed. I just wanted to give up because it was so damned hard just to get up in the morning to go through hours of pain and not see any new results. I hit rock bottom that day during my hospital stay. Then this episode aired. It was everything about it - the music, the atmosphere, the agonized scream Goku gives when he pushes through - that just resonated with me and inspired me to keep going. I eventually did learn to walk again and had made a nearly complete recovery a year and a half later. I will always love DBZ and this theme in particular for giving me the strength to break through that wall over twenty years ago.

My dudes, ladies, lovers and friends, quick backstory on this track. I actually did this one during a really dark time during the pandemic. Cases were sky-rocketing and I wasn't able to see my friends. I was actually dealing with some dark personal stuff, and felt the most alone I ever felt in my entire life. To make things even worse, smack dab in the middle of this the love of my life got really sick which we thought was covid. She was in so much pain, she couldn't even muster a word and hard the hardest head-ache in her life. She couldn't say a word with tears running down her eyes and I felt absolutely helpless and like a failure as a man because I couldn't be there for her to help in the way she needed. Because I couldn't even be in the same room as her as she suffered. I'm literally in tears thinking about this fucking memory. So the eeries and darkness of the cello around the one minute is the expression of the fear and helpness that I felt. The emotions of the vocals is my sadness of feeling like a failure.. and the last aggressive dubstep part was my absolute frustration with the state of the world and this pandemic. Luckily she didn't have Covid and ended up being ok, but it was the time in my life I felt the biggest fear imaginable and and like might have lost the person most important to me.
