The Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aereas will resume flights to Orlando and Miami next month after several months of paused service due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These routes are among the longest served onboard a Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Let’s take a look at the details of this service…

Anything over 5 hours is pushing it for me. That would be the equivalent of a transcontinental from where I live in the states. Passengers need to get up and move, aisles get congested and meal and beverage services are disrupted on single aisle service. I am afraid before too long wide bodies will be a thing of the past.

It is literally like flying from Singapore to Japan or to Australia on a 737 max both countries take around 7 h plus flight time. I rather fly in a a350 or a 777 instead of a 737800. I have a feeling it felt tiresome because there was no IFE system on the old 738. If you fly a Singapore airlines 737 MAX now, lie-flat seats in business class, with a pair of throne seats that are a window and an aisle seat, as well as IFE for every single passenger.

I see plenty of you "frequent flyers" complain about this use of the Max (you got a point on lack of comfort and the loos / bathrooms), but note that these "long haul" 7 hour flights are within "less-dense" pairs of cities (those are flights from Brasilia rather than Rio or Sao Paulo). Airlines seem to be using these "long haul" Max flights in the same way started on the 787, a smaller plane with a longer range used to reach markets that don't have enough passenger demand for a widebody airplane (in the case of the 787 was originally the A340 and now the A350). Figure that some airlines maybe doing the same with the A220-300 (on flights 400-500nm shorter than a Max 8 or 9). If you mind that long a flight on a Max maybe the option is to choose "a nearby larger city" for the flight, Rio or Sao Paulo instead of Brasilia in this case.

I recently bought tickets to the US and was presented with the choice of this flight. I chose to fly Delta in the GRU-ATL route in an A330 instead of the more direct BSB-MCO. Legroom aside, I also didn’t see any mention of in-flight meal services.

It wasn't that bad, would do it again. I did MIA>BSB>MIA back in 2019, did not get any lavish meals but not too far from the dry croissant from breakfast that AA serve in the Brazil routes. One problem for me is that if you try to wash your hands you are certain to splash water all over you, lavatory in the MAX is MIN. Well and the other issue but is a network issue, if your final destination is not BSB or GRU or GIG, you are in for some crazy short or very long connecting times.

Nice coverage! I've been on Copa's GRU-PTY route a couple of times back. Back in 2007, the sector was operated by B737-700, 2-class service. Although Copa's on board service was very nice, the main concern was the queue build up for the aft lavatories about 3-4 hours into the flight. The back of the economy classe got very busy then until the landing annoucement was heard on the PA.

Absolutely not! Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I guess the airlines and passengers flying these routes have very different ideas. Herein lies the problem with 737 MAX and A321LR / XLR. They far exceed their original mission capabilities due to redesigns and improved engine technology and efficiency. They’re workhorses and cash cows for airlines but generally offer a poor customer experience. Unfortunately, airlines take advantage of the fact that customers have little influence over the airlines’ product offerings.

@@mh12-47 This is partially true. People in the comments are failing to realize that it a flight from a country that has so many struggles and it's providing a once in a lifetime chance for millions of people to take a vacation to the United States in which they can't afford tickets on a full service airline. If they had the extra cash they too would buy a business class or premium economy seat on full service airline. GOL is a ULCC it's doing its job. Get flights at low costs and fill the seats to make money. If there's not enough demand to add a wide body aircraft to their fleet then a 737 or A321 is better than no aircraft at all. I'd take Spirit from Florida to South America if it was the only way because their tickets are 1/2 to 1/3 the cost I want to explore I don't care if I have to put up for a few hours of being uncomfortable to get a chance to see something that I couldn't afford if it wasn't for these airlines.
