I can say iam addicted to rock collecting. Having a very addictive personality I will go completely into something and completely just live this night and day. It's been 6 weeks into this completely new hobby, I love it so much I've filled up three bedrooms of amazing quartz crystals iam now going almost every day mostly at night dont know why I like it at night so much , I seem to find better stuff at night. Your videos are amazingly interesting and definitely informative going to buy your book so I can really get to the deepness of my knew love. JoeMacPlumbing I too hunt at night. I’ve done it for years. For one thing, its cooler. You do have to watch around yourself a bit more for animals, snakes, holes, thorns and what not... You will go through more batteries for your headlight too. But I do love night hunting. Good luck. Oh, one other thing: if you have a college nearby, enroll in geology 101. Then take as many field classes as you can... G 101 is tough, but after you get through that, it gets better.

You may be a prospector, but I think you are a college Geology Professor. I took Physical Geology in College in 1971 and this video took me back there. I could identify 80% percent of the samples in this video quite easily. I received your book and will be into both the videos and the book. I've collected rocks for 50 years. You would be one of the few people that could identify my house landscaping. At my house you can find my mineral samples plus Upper Devonian trilobites, crinoids, braciopods, eurypterids, ferns and fish fossils. Keep it up professor, we are watching. LOL !

7:06 Tsmp. Mi. So.Boardman has these rocks on the suffice. I found 6 or 7 different colors of obsidien. White, Black mix, blues , them green, some looked like, light jade, to dark evergreens. Good for cutting tools.

I think I have been Blessed, I couldn't figure out what type of rocks that are unusual looking from the sand, gravel and rocks I have been digging up to use the hardpan to repair the potholes on the dirt road where I live. Until I got to what is called Metamorphic Rock in your video. I have noticed some pyrite, but one of the metamorphic rocks has a small size piece of what looks like gold. Will have to get it tested to see if it is real gold. Thank you for sharing your video to subscriber's like me.

Hey love the video. Prospecting southern Az. Gold areas near southern border due south of Tucson. Known gold and silver areas. Been out quite a few times and found some gold in quartz. There are a number of gold districts in that part of AZ. Do some research to learn about them. Search on Google for "Placer gold deposits of Arizona by Maureen Johnson". If you look carefully, you will be able to download a copy for free.

What would consider the best starting purchase in terms of a tool after gaining knowledge, learning methodology and geological science and local host rocks etc. My first thought would be a great metal detector. After the obvious pick, shovel and classifiers. What are your thoughts if you don't mind offering your advice?

Metal detectors are the hardest thing to learn to find gold with. So I recommend a pan and digging tools. learn to find gold first, then learn to find gold with a metal detector later.

So I just made it to part 3 and this was awesome, I also want to say I live in Ohio so finding nuggets are slim to none I have to hunt down flour gold. But the basics with reading and checking maps (a lot of maps) I've narrowed down my areas to prospect and my first one gave me a little bit of color, but this is all gold left by glaciers with no scientific study done on the deposits which could cover 3 quarters of the state.

Hi Chris. Thanks for another excellent and relevant teaching video, truly the gold standard of any I've seen. (not that I've seen that many really but, that's a good thing too, I don't have to when I search out the best first. :) Anyway thanks, mersi. Sir i wondered if perhaps you could help me to figure out something long bugging me? You see often when I'm panning at home ... particularly when panning crushed ore I've collected from rich quartz reefs on my land.... I've been finding this stuff in the bottom of my pan that to me looks just like thin copper wire! Like about the width of a sewing pin and usually between about 1-4cm long... most often about 2cm. I've shown a few miners and prospectors I know but they couldn't tell me either and hadn't seen anything like it. One says perhaps its gold alloy of some kind but its more a guess. It looks alot more copper colour to me than the very distinctive gold I find much of in the same rocks, and though it is heavy it will wash away a little easier than even the finer gold pieces. Anyway just thought you might know offhand if it's not too much trouble? Also I'm finding alot of what I believe to be silver when panning the same reef ore for gold.... lots of relatively fine stuff but also alot of small pieces and quite a few larger pieces too. I haven't confirmed silver and don't really know but, ts non magnetic and pretty heavy but little lighter than gold too, and think its a darkish colour in the rock. And I know there's alot ofbin the area as I worked at a silver, lead, zinc, iron mine laboratory processing then analysing the ore everyday for years. probably for every ounce of gold I pull out there'd be least 6-10 Oz of that stuff, and that's just what very roughly collected few times, usually don't bother. Should I be keeping it and is it worthwhile keeping or profitable for a casual prospector? (ps if have could just link a video or article etc , don't expect jou answer all that. :)) thanks again mate. Hope I can find your book here somewhere one day.

Hey professor, I'm 14 minutes in and we're talking about the green stone. As you may have read in a previous comment this morning I have access to a couple creeks. The creek I'm in now has these big ancient rocks that are jetting out of the ground and cracks have formed and are currently continuing to form throughout the 3 dozen or so boulders. I thought maybe these huge boulders where sedimentary minimally and possibly full metamorphic. I chipped some pieces off as I tried to get in some of the cracks. Is there a way to determine older cracks from more recent cracks? Wondering as I feel the old-timers in North Carolina probably cleaned out the older cracks. Also there is a ton of a crystal based rock that has deep orange colors which is iron, as I just learned.... Are you saying they all have some gold in it? I can crack a rock and see distinct lines of the iron but can't necessarily see gold. Some of the crystal formation has a gold color? Never mind I'll buy your book if it discusses this stuff.

My apologies that 14 minutes is too much of your time to invest learning a new skill. Learning anything worthwhile takes time and effort to learn. Did you learn the skills you employ in your work in less than 14 minutes? Nowhere in the video do I say that all orange rocks have gold, I have no idea where you got that thought. The book discusses the stuff you need to know, but if 14 minutes is all you have, the book is more than 350 pages long and will take a lot more than 14 minutes to read. Seriously, finding gold is a skill, and it takes time to learn and get good at. No, you cant tell old cracks from new ones, but the cracks along the creeks get re-filled over time. Ones that were worked in the 1800s will have new gold in them put in by floods over the last 150+ years. Ones cleaned out 2 years ago wont likely have much as they have not had much time.

This video was very helpful to me as I'm a beginner on all this. I struck an area on my land that host a lot of schist and a large vein of a shiny material. Of which it looks like Galena . So I had it assayed and it came back with gold , platinum and nickel and lead and lots of copper. Is this a leverite vein? Or is it worth mining? Chalcopirite is a host in it as well. That I can tell. Silver is on the chart too. Some looks like gold when I break the rock. But? Maybe fools gold? I enjoy your videos.

Hi Chris my boyfriend got a rock from his father, he said it was float copper well he cleaned it up and it was not. He brought it to Michigan tech and they took a sample well it come back mohhkite. At a gem club meeting a member had a rock no one could identify ,the owner thought it was a meteorite, I knew right away it was not it was very heavy and magnetic but was full of holes . From your images I can tell it was basalt

@@ChrisRalph i started watching your videos because the rocks on my property glow like that and i noticed a lot of metallic minerals. And everything is pointing to invisible gold. It's really wild what is going on where I'm looking. A lot of needle like gold. Thanks for the help

Interesting to look at but its a national monument, you cannot pick up any rocks. No gold or any other valuable minerals there anyway, its just a very interesting rock formation.
