Your vids on the dragon scale were great! I attempted my first and watching your vids over and over and decided to just wrap it with metallic and I went to heavy the the brush pressure with the finish. O well by the time the fish see the rod it's to late!! Thanks for sharing your Knowledge

Hi, first of all I wanted to thank you for all the videos and the great knowledge you teach and share, I may not be a professional, but I learned a lot from you and I progress nicely, and especially love your attention to the small details, which in many cases is what makes the difference. I wanted to please ask if when I work with metallic thread and not leaf, should I even then put epoxy on the "squares" beforehand ? Thanks in advance

Hello Y L 777 - thanks for watching...I appreciate the feedback. If you are just going to execute a simple Dragonscale wrap - where you wrap size A metallic thread over the base 'squares' - then I do not find it necessary to put epoxy over the squares before over wrapping. Instead, I simply wrap the thread over the base threads and pack very tightly as I go so there are no gaps. If you want to vary your colors, you can actually use two or three different colors of metallic thread to 'blend' a color instead of just using one single color. When go to apply the first coat of epoxy over the metallic threads and base 'squares', you need to be very watchful and vigilant for bubbles. You will release a lot of bubbles...and some of them will release late...so watch it carefully for several minutes after application. Hope this helps...let me know if you have questions.

Hello, thank you for the great video. I am going to try this out. How did you cut off the tape and tag ends without damaging the blank? What is the purpose of the black wrap? Thanks
@masteringrodbuilding
@masteringrodbuilding 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching...please like and subscribe! I cut off the tape and tag ends the same way you should...VERY CAREFULLY! You have to use a very sharp blade and very light pressure. I cut the base thread tag ends at an angle to make them easy to wrap over...think a ramp vs. a step. The black wraps are simply to hold the dragonscale layout threads in place until finish is applied.

Hey Bill, would I lay the black thread down before I lay down my metallic wrap? Thank you for sharing your knowledge sir!

Thanks for watching Ross. I use a Renzetti Craftsman Rod Lathe. Same Renzetti as the fly tying vises. You can find them here: www.rdflyfishing.com/collections/rod-lathe/products/craftsman-rod-lathe I have modified it slightly so that instead of moving me and the thread carriage up and down the rod blank, the thread carriage is fixed and the base slides 4+ feet both left and right. So I can sit in one stationary position - with my lights and magnifier and tools and trash can all right there - and wrap a rod up to 8' in length. Hope this helps...please like and subscribe!

I do use it/have used it. It only looks square on small diameter blanks. Thread looks much better to me on everything else. But both techniques are useful. Drywall tape is certainly faster and easier.
