Gold Sovereign vs 1/4 oz Britannia - physical fractional bullion coins to stack/buy Royal Mint 4k HD

This video shows my two favourite fractional gold bullion coins. In this case 1/4 quarter oz gold Britannia and a 1oz ounce gold Britannia from the Royal Mint. I bought these from Sharps Pixley in London.

I like the sovereigns much more than I do the 1/4 ounce Brittanias due to the lower premiums.

Coins are not fully CGT free. You get taxed on the face value of the tender. So sovereigns being £1 are better to buy than the 1/4 which are £25 ( as legal tender)

Excellent break down of the gold content and price of the Sovereign vs the Britannia. I do stack the fractional Britannia coins but do not own a Sovereign...although I like the history behind the Sovereign.

The sovereign is recognised as a previously used coin for payment, the 1/4oz britannia hasn't been, however I do believe that the 1/4oz gold Queen's Beasts series has lifted the more affordable (as against 1/4oz QBs) 1/4oz gold britannia's acceptability. If you had a 1oz gold britannia no-one would be comparing it with sovereigns, though there is a case of using less currency that a 1oz Britannia would cost in favour of four sovereigns. After all the purpose of stacking gold is to be able to release its store of value, at your time of choosing.

@@throwachair That's exactly right, if you have 48 sovereigns in your savings portfolio, you could inflation proof your pension for 12 years liquidating a sovereign every 3 months, without feeling mortified that you've had to do it. I think you would struggle to cover 12yrs with 12 x 1oz gold coins, choosing which one to part with would just add to the agony of their impending loss.

@MetalHeadStacker Thanks, found this useful. Here in South Carolina we don’t pay tax on any bouillon but I do seek low premiums. Love old Sovereigns because I usually pay less than 4% premium on them. Again I love Britannia’s and the security features and honestly think it’s the best coin out there but I just love the sturdiness of an old Sovereign.

Being a coin collecter for 50 years ,I wouldn't buy any new coins only sovereign,s before 1900 , especially the shield backs ,you will always get at least your money back they are always in demand 🤔

In Norway I am not restrained between only these two coins tax free in that 1/4 oz range. So I buy both of them. I love the 24k bullion but I equally love the older gold coins. So it just boils down to what is the better deal. I go back and forth depending on what coins are available. I will rather buy a lovely old 22k coin than a 24k undesirable one. I think both are great and actually the old world coins might be undervalued when buying them close to spot.

@@thetruth9210 I hear you. Recently got my first gold brit quarter oz and decided it would be my main stacker. Because of the beauty, but most of all the security features as you mentioned. Although I have bought numismatic gold pieces that are in really good shape, but I paid very low premium. I think those pieces could fetch a high premium if I find the right buyer. For instance I was going to pick up two lovely Swedish 10 kr 1900 in nice condition, but the seller only had one left so he threw in a Russian 5 ruble 1898 at melt price. When I went online I saw they are sort of rare and fetch a high premium sometimes. Purchases like that is what makes me fascinated by the old world coins. I love the numismatic aspect when the metal is valuable too. Yet the gold britannia is going to be an easy sell whenever / if ever I need to sell, while the numismatic pieces is better to sell without any rush.

Interesting video. Today, using prices from a big London dealer the premiums have widened yet again. 13.09% premium for 1/4 gold Britannia 6.75% premium for Sovereign I prefer the look of the pure gold Britannia but it’s a big difference in premium that might not be worth it. That said, could the Britannia be a better collector’s item or go up more in value due to the appeal of the 24-carat gold?

Thanks for that, looks that way indeed. This years Platinum Jubilee Sovereign design has a better chance of commanding a collectors premium than the standard Brit I imagine. I'm going with the Sov's this year for all of the above reasons, but I do love the Brits in every other way.

Brittanias are the most beautiful coin in my opinion. I don't have a 1/10 oz gold but i do have one in platinum. Not only is it the most beautiful coin but it's the most beautiful coin with the most security features to date

chards and atkinsons premium more around 5.5% on sovs, dont see many of the 2022 sovs on ebay when i look, maybe not too popular with that colour.

All sovereigns year 2000 and over have the copper tinge to them none of the bullion grade coins have any real numismatic/collector value. If you are investing in sovereigns you really are only investing with the expectation of the price of gold rising.and it doesn't matter what colour the coin is it's 22ct.

Yes, it is a 22k gold coin no matter what year you buy.

Out of interest, 1 oz Britannia’s seem to have the smallest premiums. Why buy 4 x 1/4 oz and pay huge premiums?

Easier to sell. And if you only need a few hundred pounds you can just sell one, rather than having to sell the big 1oz coin and having loads of extra cash you didn’t need.

The soverign hold's much more value within your tax allowance. As it's face value is only £1 compared to the britainian at £25. So it's a no brainer.....

The 1971 Coinage Act states: "No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin." you can trade or sell them for their gold value but for tax purposes and the payment of debts they are legal tender. This is precisely why they are cgt free! Did you really not know this? 🤔

@@gympump8702 not completely cgt free. Cgt applies but only to the face value of the coin. So the sovereign being £1 you will only pay cgt on that. So a big pile of 1/10s and a big pile of sovereigns you will pay less tax on the sovereign

Still allowed to buy 240 Britainian coins a year without paying any capital gains on them as you get be a £6000 a year allowance. Is that correct?
