Oh what treasure! And I'm talking about this video. It's great to find an older Numi video that's somehow previously escaped my attention (before I subscribed to the channel). And this one is a classical gem. The coins are also a delight of course. Thank you very much for a very informative production.

@Numistacker I think its probably quite a good idea to always have some various Bullion coins that can be sold readily , if needed to for various reasons , without having to sell treasured special coins that you may be bit attached to . . and may be hard to get again ?? Thanks Numi!!👍🏻.....This is JUST the Video that My Daughter (Jennifer) was looking for!!😉 As I stated in another one of your Vids. (Or the E-Mail that She sent you about The "Coin World" Article, that gave "NUMISTACKER" the "Shout Out" in!)...... As She is IN LOVE! And is going to Start a "Sovereign" Collection!😍😍😍.......As My American Proof DCAM, (ULTRA CAMEO 'With NGC") Silver Trade Dollars, just don't "Float Her Boat" LOL!.........I will state that I am Happy that she has picked UK "Old Gold" instead of the Pre-1933 American Gold, as I just personally think (And of course, so does My Daughter) that the Coins from across the pond are just much better looking!!... So Again, Thanks For This Video My Friend!......As THIS VIDEO WAS SPOT ON, TO WHAT SHE WAS LOOKING FOR!..... So Again, Thank You! And God Bless, You, and Yours...... Sean, Jennifer......

Nice coins, but beware. The first was a Jubilee head London, horse with long tail. According to Marsh it is extremely rare (R3) but in reality there are plenty of these coins. Don't think you will get rich with these coins. But the second jubilee head is a beauty, with a nice premium..
@philippayne4951
@philippayne4951 5 жыл бұрын
It not a point in getting rich, numismatics is about types and varieties, condition and if the coin is rare or not. Marsh although list a piece as rare, it means its rarer then the average sovereign. price depends on demand from collectors, and prevailing market conditions.

During the 60s and 70s, Sovereigns from bullion dealers all went for the same price, but Victorian ones always sold for a little more. However all shield back sovereigns always sold for more. During the 60s and early 70s female sovereigns always sold for less in Muslim countries then male sovereigns, due to a woman's status then. Today however this has all changed in Muslim countries. During the 60s and early 70s you could find BU sovereigns at bullion dealers, and get them for the same price as well worn pieces, because all sovereigns are classed as bullion gold coins, and its still the same today. However because so many collect sovereigns today, and want top condition, this has all changed, and bullion and coin dealers go through them with a fine tooth comb and prices now go through the roof, for the best pieces. When you consider you will have to pay £600 to £700 for a BU common old head Victorian sovereign against £300 for a VF very fine piece, its not for the average collector anymore. Its well worth looking at the lower grades, because its still worth collecting, just make sure they have not been mounted or cleaned.
@Numistacker
@Numistacker 5 жыл бұрын
Some great points thank you very much. I think that people at the moment are very very focused on quality and will pay a significant extra money for the very best sovereigns particular shield backs.
@philippayne4951
@philippayne4951 5 жыл бұрын
@@Numistacker At this moment of time I would have to agree with. The problem now is that as these to pieces dry up from the market, and as the price for top pieces continue to rise, you have to think about what you get for your money. For example at the moment, you would have to pay £700 to £800 for a choice BU old head sovereign, although this is a very nice gold sovereign, you could get two in VF condition for this money, and have more gold for your money. And although you have a very nice BU sovereign compared to two lower grades, what happens when the buyer wants to sell the sovereign, what will you get.? There will be a time in the future, when buyers will not pay these dizzy prices, because these prices will keep going up.

I got a 1959 soveriegn for way more than what I think I sould have paid for it. It's in MS64 graded by NGC. Anyways, as a numismatic guy wanting to "stack" gold, I would love to see you do more videos on buying tips for soveriengs and gold in gerneral.

@philippayne4951

The 1959 sovereign is the rarest date of the first head of Elizabeth 11 by Mary gillick. If its a MS 64 its a nice grade. If you just want to stack gold sovereigns, then just buy sovereigns at the cheapest rate, just make sure they are genuine. But stacking does not concern genuine collectors ie numismatists.

Interesting advice also thanks - do you buy them already MS graded or do you search for suitable looking coins and get those graded yourself?? Are the uplifts of plain Bullion to MS coins signicant do you think ? Cheers !!
@meteoman7958
@meteoman7958 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sora. I never get coins graded. MS, of course, just means uncirculated and I buy uncirculated and proof coins whenever they are available at prices just a small amount over spot.
@philippayne4951
@philippayne4951 5 жыл бұрын
MS sovereigns are not bullion coins, but are collected by coin collectors, because they are high grades. Bullion pieces are for people who just wish to stack gold sovereigns. They are of little interest to collectors, unless nice condition or rare, and can be bought above the daily price of gold at a small premium.

The other point that I would say, it does not matter what sovereign you have or condition, they all have a basic bullion price, irrespective of how rare it is. The only reason that top grades and rare sovereigns go for dizzy prices is because collectors want to own them,which pushes the prices up. But to the average person who just want to own a gold sovereign, it makes no difference.

A spread of 6%? That's a lot. Goldforex Brussels has a spread of 2.5% and that's about the spread other coinshops in belgium have. You might wanna go there if you're planning to sell or buy a lot.

Where do you find Sovereign only 4% over spot? Almost all Europeans dealers I've seen charge atleast 6-8% premium, then add in €15-20 shipping, that's easily over 10% premium then.

Paul Powell, it's not a full Sov! John says it's a half, which would be around £120 in melt. As it's a desirable date (Queen Vic's Golden Jubilee) in mint state, he should easily get £200+, although I have seen same date in much higher grade go for less than £220.
