I believe projection to be one of the most important (and damaging) human psychological behaviours for which people should develop acute self-awareness. It should even be taught in schools IMO. So many of our societal ills are a consequence of projection. Thank you for this excellent piece.

Hard to say why we have to learn these things the hard way. When we do it leaves a hell of lasting impression. I'm 55 and just learned about these sorts of things. I used it to find parts of myself I was squashing. When anyone irritated me I would search within and see what bothered me and why....I didn't really get answers but I stopped attacking others with my thoughts and spent a lotta time letting me know that I love all parts of me/us and accept every part etc....just really stopped with the judgment and i feel connected with myself and have warm interactive relationships with others for the first time.. it's nice not to be in constant pain.

All that I, in fact, died believing, as wholeheartedly as i could have. Then take all the lesser minds that have graced this place, divide for the amount of sadness THAT variable causes and add THAT to how much suffering those dead souls have overcome. now, add all the destruction of my old life that has been debased by all the treachery that comes from the ignorance of all those lesser minds, and then combine THAT with that which could be our futures, And solve for a way out of this place. So essentially, introspection is required to fight against projection.
@meaningofreason
@meaningofreason 2 жыл бұрын
I would personally put it in a different way, it’s self-awareness (which requires ‘humility’), in which ultimately “introspection” or “reflections” will comes with it. Because if I didn’t realized that I have acted or have done anything worth introspecting or reflecting (in other words, I am self-deceived), then I won’t be able to introspect on my projections; so in the very capacity of self-awareness comes self-correction.

This topic goes deep, but the introduction explains it quite well. The way people project their emotions on to others is always a direct result of their own internal dialogue and not a result of the other people's views. Although their reaction to another's actions will tend to show another side to the person.

The thing is right, how do you know if you're projecting, or if the other person really is in the wrong? If I see evil in others does it necessarily mean that there is a subconscious evil in me. And is there any value in trying to avoid projection? Or will the universe look down on you for trying to hard. Presumably if it's an unconcious action you aren't in control.

If others are asking for your reasoning behind your name calling and you hold such an unreasonable stance, you are projecting your insecurities behind your pride thinking that you know more. A person who is truthful has nothing to lose, and will confidently reason. He conducts plagiarism and is unfairly protected by his pristiege, yes. But for you to resent him without critical reasoning, makes you no better. IMO, his quote does reflect who he is as a person. Not something I like either, but there is a point. We have to conquer ourselves first if we want to rise to power. That is a pointer to self confidence, even if he is a person that uses underhanded tactics. This might be something that you are lacking, hence the projection of your insecurities.

It's funny because during work, I've suffered heavy judgement from everyone who has projected against me, many of them are living through failed marriages and scandals etc. And then I go home after trying to keep a smile for so long I've ignored my own shadow, and my own shadow lashes out, repeating this cycle of projection. We haven't even discussed the scale of wars or conflicts and yet humans still trap each other in perpetual cycle of the collective shadow in a small, everyday scale, like family and workplace. Thank you for all the knowledge you are sharing through these videos.

This is truly validating. I was misjudged, blamed, gaslighted by multiple narcissists and I’ve been told I’m the one “projecting my experiences” due to my vulnerability, due to the rules and requirements I assert for others to be around me. I “need to get over” my emotions and “must quickly forgive” , not because it is good for me, but because it is good for them.

"When you point one finger, there are three fingers pointing back at you". I think I've read this in Existential Psychotherapy, by the one and only Irvin Yalom. Perhaps this was not his own idea, but I'm pretty sure that's where I found it. It's about "how we perceive others", how we think we perceive others, how others perceive us, how we think others perceive us and how others think they perceive us.

Good video. Random thought: I’ve read almost all of Jung, and I always hear people quoting his assertions about making the “unconscious conscious” as like-some ultimate goal in life, but I never hear anyone, not even Jung, talking about the innate tendency and utility of the human body to do the opposite, and make the conscious unconscious. Examples: you learn to flick the light switch On, or you learn to drive, at first you do it consciously, but after a while, it becomes ‘second nature’, autonomic, and it is done quite unconsciously. To do these things unconsciously is not some sign of degradation, but a sign of mastery. (Sort of like Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super.)

P.S also doing task involving your hands so to enhance your dexterity especially the fingers will help greatly, think playing the piano, practicing writing with the left hand if you are right handed and vice versa, brushing your teeth with your right hand if you are left handed and vice versa, learning to juggle balls with both hands or one hand, learning to juggle a ball (football) or soccer ball for you M'ericans with your both feet or using one foot. Doing this will greatly enhance co-ordination and reveal imbalances, greatly helping in my opinion connection of the left and right hemisphere.

Exactly, this was very good, something I subconsciously understood and resisted, but one can only control oneself, the human ego often makes accepting responsibility for their mistakes, on one like to admit they’re wrong if they can blame others…

A VIDEO ON DEREALIZATION PLEASE. after hearing the Jung excerpt that you quoted I’m starting to explore the idea that projection is the early stage catalyst of Derealization and maybe Depersonalization. Once you’ve traveled too far into your paradoxical life, seeing that you were targeting hatred at your own projection and not the world would be extremely hard to recover from. And if you don’t recover I assume the ego would essentially sit on the outside of reality not being able to find a place in either side, because you’ve realized that you weren’t the victim of a cruel world but that you were the cruelty. Unable to except that you are wholly the problem while unable to revert back to your paradoxical life because you know now.
@TripparSnippar

What a mind bender. You force your ego out of your conscious because you realise you’ve been creating the hatred you were unconsciously projecting onto others from your shadow self. Depending on the fragile nature of that persons mind, I can only imagine it would have to take a truely traumatic event to be the catalyst. I don’t know much of anything about psychology, but I know damaged people and tried to tiptoe them through these ideas only for them to shut me down. Maybe I’m the one in the wrong, maybe they’re in denial. I only hope they find a balance sooner rather than too late.. or never.

@@Menace2society187ya idk what you’re referring too here but if it’s my comment then clearly there’s a lot you don’t understand about the world. And clearly you don’t have any true intention of understanding the world because you’ve chosen to insert yourself needlessly and disregard the mental exploration of someone who DOES want to understand. Next time just hold your tongue, though you may not have the discipline to.

@@Menace2society187yaoh but it is, You’re in the comment section of a video explaining projection, and here you are projecting, how ironic 😂 You don’t know what you don’t know, and you can only meet people as deep as they’ve met themselves. Next time, if someone is speaking from experience, maybe don’t try tell them “it’s not that deep” because unless you’ve experienced it you will never understand how deep it really does go.

That was absolutely incredible I listened and re listened and paused to try and articulate some things you were trying to say, it's so rejuvenating to be able to process some of the things I've been feeling into actual words, I love the philosophical quotes you put in to every video, I'm extremely fascinated with Carl jungs work and I'm also going to read the inner gold book by Robert. Johnson because it seems really interesting. I'm also looking into the archetypes of the human psyche it kind of falls into anthropology field which I'm also extremely interested in. The transferance subject on projection was actually really intriguing as well. I'm guilty of this one, but how can we change our own bias sub conscious views and opinions if we have no control of the about what information we process and the way we process it.

Acknowledgement is the first step of looking into yourself, i remember sicario 2, "you're asking me how the watch works, for now lets just keep an eye on the time" i paraphrase, but keep looking inward self improvement is a lifelong journey and expecting a quick fix is a sure way to demoralise yourself and quit. This video blew my mind and i have a lot to work on but there is absolutely no rush. Think of it this way if you finish fixing yourself today what else is there to do?

Projection is part of being human being. We are solipsistic entities that come to a shared experience of reality. It becomes a problem when we become fixated to a person perception which can be caused by the anxiety of unknown or fearing of changing your beliefs/belief system.

I wonder if projection is always bad. If I recognise some behaviour of myself in others and point it out, its easy gor them to deflect that and say that I am just projecting, but that projection might very well be true. Lets say someone is telling a story and that person is bragging about expensive hotels and naming all the expensive things they bought... I might say that this person does that because they get their selfworth out of these aspects of life. I can say this because I have noticed the same tendency within myself in the past. Does that mean I am projecting and why would that be a bad thing? Its most likely true even tho the perso in question would probably deny it due to their own judgment about it.

Mindfulness is the antidote to being trapped in this dynamic. To the point where you start to not even take offense much, by having a deeper understanding of others and why they may behave in certain ways. I feel the more I understand my emotions, digesting them with wisdom in real time, the more intentionally I can “see” and respond to others with intent. And then a couple days of shitty sleep and a missed meal… BOOM, back to getting offended until I can reel in my emotions and orient myself😂

I think it's interesting to think about the degree to which Jung, Freud etc. Came to their conclusions about the psyche by projection themselves. Much of it reads like self-inspection blown out to relate to all people.

Betrayal is actually an aspect of humanity, distrust that results from that experience comes from knowledge out of experience and it's not a "projection", at least not in a sense that your implying. Because when someone is "projecting" it implies you're just imagining things. Also, logically it does not follow, nor does it have anything to do with projecting ones own aspects of personality onto others. That's a different thing altogether. Again, to reiterate, betrayal is an aspect of humanity. Learning from betrayal and being betrayed is a learning process, a process of becoming an adult.

Agreed, I wasn’t really loved right as a child, Even believed for years that if I wasn’t in the picture, my parents could’ve just went their separate ways. But I’ve always had this great desire to create something better. I went out into the world believing that because I was filled of love I never got to express, I was going to find love… I was wrong, I poured my love out to people who not only didn’t deserve it, but made me feel like something was wrong with me for genuinely practicing love, real love, not the shallow bs. I was told I was too soft and too naive. Too innocent to the world, and I believed them. Now I have a negative projection on humans… I hate it, I want to go back to who I was so badly, but I’m learning it’s going to take a lot of work to get back there. At least I’ve learnt my limits and also my worth, now I won’t give whatever little love I have left, to a “wrong” person again.
