What is the Meaning of Death?

What is the meaning of death? It is the unequivocal and permanent end of our existence. Most people unconsciously repress the idea of their death, as it is too horrifying a notion to think about.
Some are perhaps not so horrified of the idea of death, but rather the pain associated before one’s death, or the death of loved ones. We live entirely unique lives with complete different experiences, but we all share one common fate: Death. This is what links all of us together. Death smiles at us all and all we can do is smile back.
In this video we will analyse death philosophically and psychologically: if it is undesirable, if it is to be feared and the misconceptions around the notion of death. Starting with the terror of death with Becker’s The Denial of Death and how to confront one’s mortality with the Stoic Memento Mori and Nietzsche’s Free Death “dying at the right time”.
We’ll then discuss the Death of Socrates “the unexamined life is not worth living” and Carl Jung’s notions of Life and Death along with his near death experience.

It’s ignorantly assumed that ‘one does not exist’ after death...and that, ‘death deprives us of life’. How do we know that what we call ‘death’ is not more appropriately thought of as ‘door’ to ever existent ‘life’ of the ‘soul’...the consciousness we know as ‘ourselves’? I recently lost my wife of 23 years at the young age of 56. I feel like we were both robbed of another 20yrs together and I miss her terribly. Death however was a blessing for her as she was in severe pain the last six months of her life and slowly became disabled unable to walk,sit up or even roll over by herself by the end of her life. She really wasn't living in that state. She had been diagnosed with arthritis and although I feared it was something worse I never gave up hope that she would get better and we went to the doctor twice a month for the last six months. Finally they did a cscan and found that she had been eat up with cancer which was the root of her problem. I broke down sobbing but my wife didn't even flinch. They admitted her into hospice that same day and she died a week later. I believe that our souls live on but even if I'm wrong I know she's no longer in pain. There are a few things I would do differently if I could but mainly it's the things I wish I had done that bothers me. Cherish every moment with your loved ones because we never know when our time will come and once someone is gone any opportunity to tell them how you feel is passed. May God bless you and your wife with many more years of living your lives as if it were your last

@@timrice65 i think I can somehow relate because I lost my mother three days ago due to diabetic complications. Like your wife she also suffered terribly during the last one and half years of her life and was bedridden having been reduced to a mere skeleton. Not only did she lose one leg but also the remaining one only a year apart and i somehow feel relieved that my mom is no longer suffering. Caring for her with my dad for her all these years i deep down knew her time on this earth was growing short but when it finally happens it all feels like a nightmare.

Wow! Jung had a classic NDE! I did not know this! That explains so much! Just gonna drop this here: There have been verifiable accounts of conscious existence both before birth and after objectively detected death. The argument that coming back to life means they weren't really dead is irrelevant. All methods and means that we have to detect death at the time of death showed DEATH! None of this denies nor invalidates our need to come to terms with approaching death while we live. I'm 59. I have stage 4 cancer. I have no idea if I'm going to reach 60. And that's okay. I can only do my best for the rest of my time here. No one gets outta here alive.

Due to the topic of the video there must be some viewers who have too close of experience with death. In my case I have PTSD from having had cancer. Before I managed to survive the doctors told me it was the end and I had “2 years at most”. I cannot describe the horror that happens in a person’s mind when it happens to you. Unless you are faced with something like this you don’t know how bad it is. After my experience i cannot casually watch movies that trivialize death or even casually play video games where people are killed. It made me realize that people can be entirely de-sensitized to seeing, hearing, or thinking about death without ever being able to understand people who face it.

I’m 20yrs old and not really religious, but I’ve thought about death for the longest time I couldn’t come to terms with it. But I now understand it, or at least accept it.

Death used to be one of our greatest fears in life right up with abandonment and never being enough. Then after being late diagnosed with autism we very slowly started to realize we were always enough we just had no one around to teach us that growing up. Around three-four months before we were disowned we started to develop nightly physically painful panic attacks, and The Grim Reaper started visiting us every single night. It felt like my life up until meeting him was the real hell, and he was testing me to see if I was strong enough to leave it. I genuinely thought I would die every night, it was that painful, but Death became a consistent comfort. Then when I was disowned by my narcissistic father, I knew that is why Death started haunting me. Around a year later my grim reaper adopted me as his spiritual son once I was equal to him and had proven that. I don’t fear death anymore. Because my Death, means everything to me.

It depends on the person and on their age. I for one, have contemplated my death since I was a boy because when I was in that stage of my life, someone young in my family died. It affected me deeply and thus for the longest time would think about the death of everyone I ever knew, constantly. I felt no fear in contemplating my own death. It is only in my 20s that the fear has surfaced. Just because you don't currently fear death doesn't mean you never will. I have learned that lesson.

I believe there can be no beginning and and no end. Looking at the four cycles without the illusion of time; there are infinite recurring cycles of death, change, rebirth and life. Great content, thank you! The argument about laziness when talking about eternal life doesn't have much impact to me since it typically revolves around the idea that people wouldn't "make the most out of every day" if there wasn't a definite and unavoidable end. My problem with this point is that Death exists and has been part of our experience forever, but people still don't make the most out of their time at all! People already procrastinate even though they know for a fact it's bad for them in their situation so what's the difference? Also, eternal life still entails that you need to survive (it's not like invincibility or something), so people would certainly have plenty to do with their time. The focus on productivity would most likely relax quite a bit (for a moment), but the stress of having enough capital to keep living would probably come and push productivity in the fore front of people's lives again... What we need isn't eternal life, but a better capacity to accept and to adapt to our environment (physical, cultural, social)

I would say if death is analagous to the prior abyss, then the real questions lie in how to live a meaningful life. Even despite being an insignificant microcosm in the grand scheme of things. Great video! As an undergrad I wrote my Philosophy capstone on some overlapping topics.

I try and think of it like this, when we were in the womb of our carrier (mother) we were pretty much comfy it was the only world we knew, and we had food delivered directly to us (umbilical cord) then after a few months something really strange happened and we felt like it was a death experience so disturbing to the point of total shock so we pop out loud/crying it was a dramatic moment a huge change.. I feel like death is the same way it’s a terrible few mins and then a new world

Ultimately I’m afraid of leaving love ones behind that may need my protection and guidance. Ironically in the face of death Id be more afraid of the future than the present. Which now that I think about it my fear of death is simply my fear of the future in disguise. Which now that I think about it my fear of the future is birth by my desire to be needed and wanted which makes my value of life completely determined on how other people value me. This can easily explain why my entire life I have always try to appeal to people even if they did not like me or I did not relate to them, that is also probably why my entire life criticism has always mentally affected me. After recently graduating from high school I have begun to learn how to only allow those who actually mean something to me determine my value of life, but that scares me because unlike materialistic objects life can be taken and impossible to replace. Which now that I think about it that can be perceived as me fearing death. Ultimately I’ve come to the conclusion that life and death are both terrifying and beautiful, they serve their purpose which makes me wonder if they were design that way by a God, and if they were an after life now seems implausible. Edit: I wrote this comment before watching the video I have to say I agree with Ernest Becker at 5:57 I do that, I never thought of it as narcissistic but it kind of is.

I stopped fearing death after I had children. I now understand that I only have my time in the sun because those that came before me enjoyed their time and then made room for me by dying. I will make way for all those to come after me as well. I'm not afraid or unset about this. I'm grateful.

In my experience throughout living, it's that people want to keep each other alive for as long as one can. Like if a loved one is suffering, let them go. Death has always been part of my daily vocabulary. To some, it's taboo and needs to be extinguished and tucked away. If I'm going to die, I'm going to fkn die. Let me sleep. I've come near death several times and I'm 30 years of age. I dream death and sometimes have nightmares about it. My philosophy is: if a living person is afraid to die, then a dead person must be afraid to live fully.

I already understand that when someone dies they will actually stay gone permanently, whether we want to or not and no matter how good the person is, and we can't even remember any moments that happened when they were still alive because that is the past and it's not the same as the present or future, but I still wish that some people didn't die because I feel like I should suffer since I can never see them again. In fact, I wish that people can't die by accidents because that is even worse than if they die naturally by being too old... Actually, as a matter of fact, I think death shouldn't even exist because I don't know why people are eventually going to stay dead forever when they get too old if no one wants that to happen. I decided to name here every person I know who died, and why I wish they were still alive. 1. Radomirka Dačević, also known as Grandma Rada, is my neighbor. She was born on March 2nd 1944 and died on April 17th 2016, which means she died 7 years ago. The thing that makes her such a good person is that she had a really nice personality and always babysat me when I was alone. 2. Miodrag Stojiljković, better known as Grandpa Dragi, is my maternal grandfather. He was born on July 20th 1945 and died on August 22nd 2018, that was 5 years ago. He was also such a great person. 3. Dragiša Alabić, also known as Grandpa Gile, is my paternal grandfather. He was born on August 13th 1935 and died a long time ago before I was born, on June 20th 1989. He was only 53 years old, so he actually died due to a car accident and not by being too old. 4. Miodrag Mišković, better known as Grandpa Miško, is the maternal grandfather of my paternal cousins Nikola and Nemanja Alabić, as well as their maternal cousins Stefan and Irena Đorđević. He was born on August 24th 1935 and died in 2015, I just don't know exactly when. I don't really know he acted like when he was still alive because I haven't usually seen him, but I think he would be good. 5. Petar Mančić, better known as Grandpa Pera, is my neighbor. He was born in 1944 and died either on July 25th or 27th 2023. 6. Milica, or Grandma Milica, is the great-grandmother of my godfather Nenad Filipović. I don't know what is her last name or date of birth and death. 7. Zagorka Jelesijević, also known as Grandma Zaga, is my neighbor who used to live in the second house of the Dragan Petrović 12 Street, or as we call it Kolonija. She and her husband Aleksije Jelesijević, better known as Grandpa Leka, approximately moved to live in the Gavrilo Princip Street while their granddaughter Nataša lived in Kolonija with her husband Nikola and their children Mladen and Milena. This means that Grandma Zaga and Grandpa Leka are actually the great-grandparents of Mladen and Milena. I don't know when Grandma Zaga was born, but I do know that she died 3 years ago in 2020, I just don't know exactly when. 8. Grandpa Leka also died this year on July 30th 2023. He is definitely the person that I mostly didn't want to die because I think he had a very positive and nice attitude and I remember so many moments when he was still alive, but sadly he did die due to one disease that I don't know which. He was born in 1937, but I don't know exactly which day. I haven't usually seen him or Grandma Zaga when they were still alive. The last time I have ever seen him was when my father and I went to his house when Grandma Zaga died. Okay, now I'm going to tell you a few other facts about why I wish that death wasn't real. 1. On May 31st 2017, I went on a field trip to a city in Serbia known as Vrnjačka Banja in fifth grade school. My class elder told me that there was one kid who climbed a building there but accidentally fell and died. Now this is definitely one of the people that I especially think shouldn't have died because the kid was literally too young and it happens really rare when someone dies by accidents. 2. I was once going back home from school and I saw 3 dead cats on the streets who were probably run over by a car. Now this is probably the weirdest and most illegal things that ever could've happened as cats have 9 lives... I mean, not really, people only say that because they die hard. They only don't take fall damage. 3. When I went to my village one time, some people murdered a pig so they would get its meat, but I think that people shouldn't kill animals, I think they should stay alive like us humans.

You should live one day at a time, as if each day was your last day, because, in the end of the day, "sleep is just the end being shy", like a smaller passing away each day in preparation for the certain final ending. One day, when you be prepared to fall asleep without any regrets or expectations for waking up, that is the same day that you will realize that you are prepared for the real final sleep.

I think there's an intrinsic fallacy in thinking that death deprives you of life, future and what could be, therefore it should or does scare us more than the non-existence before our birth. Before you were born you were deprived of the times that came before your birth just like death will after. It makes no difference, it's an irrational fear, in which we see life and death on the same plane and in conflict between good and evil, which is an arbitrary human construct. Non existence is infinitely expanding in both directions, before and after your birth, your existence is a parenthesis in the middle. It's a hierarchy not a conflict.

I’ve been understanding death for myself to be a gateway to life… We die everyday. Through death of one’s self, we discover true life. Death is a natural part of life and should be embraced, not feared. Only the ego fears death. Allow your old self to die, so you can allow your true self to live. And when the end goal comes, there will be nothing to fear.

death seems very often as the solution to end the suffering, more specifically self caused death, though an average human does not fear death until he is immediately confronted with it, or atleast believes he is, only then he will begin to understand what death actually means and starts fearing it, more so the causes and the way to it.
