Yeah Joyce, thank you for acknowledging Casey Affleck's great comedic timing. He's so funny in Tower Heist with Ben Stiller. I also got the DunKings meal and I kept the box too, cannot wait for that Superbowl ad.

Audiards "tried in the court of realism" line was so insulting, we know the movie is a fantastical opera, we know people don't just randomly burst out into song in the middle of the streets, we understand that, we are not stupid and it was quite honestly patronizing for him to say that, also this idea that everyone who is displeased with the movie didn't watch it or was too dumb to understand it because we don't understand visionary auteurs is so ridiculous. He tried to play it off as "oh people are criticizing the printer appearing out of nowhere" like no the criticism is about your stereotypical depiction of Mexico and Mexican culture, and of the trans experience, which by the way there's an article that was published in Mexico of a trans actress and activist who auditioned and told Audiard himself that the representation wasn't quite there and that she could provide insight if they wanted and they completely ignored her.

I lost respect for KSG right after Marisa Paredes died and she made her death about herself and her movie. It was a horrible thing to say and she blocked me the next day, she started blocking Mexican people with any type of critic towards Emilia Perez and one month later tweets went viral and the stuff plenty Mexicans were saying for months became noticeable but it's too late. The Academy thought it was being woke and they failed miserably, they proved how out of touch they are with general audiences and Karla's apology were not sincere, just the one from last night because the desesperation to win awards. It was a giant mess. Netflix should have gone with Maria or His Three Daughters but oh well

Not all trans people hate EP. We are not a monolith. Also, GLAAD awards are worthless. They snubbed literally EVERY movie which majorly features trans characters and was awards eligible in 2024. TV Glow, Close To You, National Anthem, etc.

Why is it that all the Mexican and Brazilian movies that get nominated by the Academy are always centered on Caucasian families? It's as if people of color in those countries don't exist and if they do, it is only in their relationship to white folks. See "Roma," "I'm Still Here," "Y tu Mama' tambien." It reminds me of the controversy surrounding the movie "The Impossible" about the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The film itself was very good. But the only movie about that major natural disaster in which over 100,000 mostly Asian people died, was centered on a white family, and a Anglicized one at that. The movies that get made and by extension what gets honored, comes across like a form of cultural colonialism. When all good stories default to white, that's problem.

"City of God" is the most-nominated brazilian movie ever (4 nominations) at the Oscars, and the great majority of the cast is black.
@LeeBeeDeeTree512 сағат бұрын
@@cssomeone I forgot about "City of God." But it is truly the exception that proves the rule. Despite its success, how many other internationally released movies from Brazil feature people of color? And even COG was marketed in countries like the U. S. to make it look like the Alice Braga character was the main protagonist and that she was slumming with a bunch of dark-skinned criminals just for kicks.
@cssomeoneСағат бұрын
@@LeeBeeDeeTree51Well, guess what, there are white people (or white latinos) in Brazil. There isn't a movie industry in Brazil, so most of the movies are made by a single studio (O2 Filmes, which make mostly comedies), or movie makers/directors who pay for their own movies or make partnerships (Walter Sales, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Fernando Meireles, Anna Muylaerte e Karim Äinouz being the most famous). Guess what they all have in common? They are all white. Of course there are movies made and starred by black people ("Medida Provisória" from a few years ago being a hit with critics and audiences in Brazil), but most of them (as the biggest part of movies made here) are small and/or independent, which makes It difficult to breakthough overseas. As for Alice Braga, maybe they used her image because she is Sônia Braga's niece, and most of the actor in the movie were amateur/unknown even in Brazil

Art is supposed to be disruptive. "Emilia Perez" is bold, brash, genre-bending and ENTERTAINING AF. Is it the best film? That's rarely the point with the Oscars. Should the Academy honor it? Sure, it's an exclusive club awarding honors to whomever they want. What artists hate the most is being told what to do. All this vitriol is making EP more attractive to the Academy.

The Academy should reward the movie they think is the best. Old tweets of its leading lady should be irrelevant as well as the problems with the movie of trans, Mexican and/or transphobic people. Is "Emilia Perez" a great postmodern musical? Obviously it is. And if someone does not understand it, it's their problem, not the problem of the movie. :)

They “should” but everyone acknowledges the extreme amount of dollars pumped to market a film. Whomever is most seen and liked wins… not always the best and most deserving.

Not an issue of “understanding” it’s a shite exploitation film masquerading as being something different.
@cssomeone4 сағат бұрын
It's not like Emilia Pérez was going to win big at the Oscars night anyway (Supporting Actress, Song and International at best), especially when it comes to Best Actress in a Leading Role. But do you really believe The Academy would allow someone who has openly offended many people, and even the Academy Awards itself calling it "an afro-korean festival" because of its diversity, get away without being punished? What you seem to have forgotten is that there are (many) mexicans (Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón have shown support to I'm Still Here instead of Emilia Perez), trans and allies, koreans and black people who vote for the Oscars.
@SandraPerez-gf4xv3 сағат бұрын
@@bn5271 it is a problem for a movie when viewers do not get the message its trying to convey. Or if the message is not truly authentic. The movie was about a drug lord transitioning from a man to a woman. That is not a true representation of the trans community experience, as reflected by GLAAD not endorsing the film. The Mexican-American community has rejected it for failing to portray “Mexican” characters that can’t even speak the language appropriately. In contrast, the Brutalist is being shunned for using AI to fix (post production) the dialect of the main character. Obviously, accent matters! So, NO, this is not a great film worthy of an Oscar.
