It beats the alternative, which is if you are too hurt to play in the season, then you must be too hurt to play in the playoffs. Wait until some pissed off team gets their revenge against this by sending out a goon to put them back on LTIR.
@lousyracuse6 ай бұрын
It is NOT just Vegas taking advantage of this loophole, many teams are doing this. Tampa Bay won a title hiding one of their best players on LTIR, only to see them "magically" healed for the playoffs. Colorado keeps doing this with Landeskog in hopes he will be able to play in the playoffs. Vegas took it to a new level this year, and hopefully the NHL is taking notice. As a fan of the NHL, this has to change IMHO. Teams should go to the playoffs with the players who got you there!

No, Landeskog is legit hurt. He hasnt played since the 2022 cup run. Makar the year before sliced open Landeskog’s knee with his skate. After they won the cup he decided to get the surgery, which went bad which is why he was MIA the 22-23 season and had it done again before the 23-24 season. This time however it went better. They have always been open that Landeskog might make it into the playoffs since January. If the intent was to skirt the rule, announcing it to the world is not a good idea.

I disagree with just saying it's "unsavory", I'd say it "appears unsavory". Also, it's disingenuous to say "they've done this 3 straight years", without looking at the details of each year. The first year they missed the playoffs. So last year they obviously still thought they should play the LTIR shell game again even though it failed miserably the year prior, so they "loaded up" at the deadline with Stone out. But in what world is adding 2, 2 mil dollar forwards (Blueger and Barbashev) and an aging goalie (Quick, who didn't even sniff a playoff appearance) considered "loading up". I'd say they added some "depth". This year they have indeed "loaded up", but they are barely squeaking into the playoffs and I'd say let's see what happens before you decide it's "unsavory" or "stupid". Usually throwing guys together with very little time together doesn't work regardless of how good they are, compounded by getting injured guys back that haven't played in months.

The fact that it happened at the exact time it happened is extraordinarily convenient. And the timing being such an important factor is unfair. You caught us. Kelly "McCriminal's" evil master plan was sit out our CAPTAIN and one of the best two-way defensive forwards in the NHL to trade for two decent players and an injured one whose medical timeline was undetermined. That way we could barely make the playoffs and have to play a Western Conference Top Seed... or if we're lucky, Edmonton. And to lead the charge against those juggernauts, we'll pull some "unsavory" "shenanigans" by activating Stone who hasn't played in 8+ weeks. Playoff hockey against Conference leading teams seems like a really smart way to help a player get back into the game. Last year, teams targeted Stone and hit him repeatedly in the back... it took him two rounds to start playing decently. And now both our likely opponents will want blood. Yeah, this is absolutely genius. Losing a spleen because Benn and Kane are among the dirtiest players in the NHL seems like the dream scenario for Stone to end his career. Do any of the haters have even a clue about pro hockey and professional athletes? This conspiracy theory should be left where it belongs... in politics! Next you guys will be posting that Eichel never had a neck injury and conspired with the Vegas cheaters to get on a better team so they could win the Stanley Cup...

Just pro-rate the remaining salary in the season. If 1/3 of the season is left when the player is put on LTIR, then 2/3 of the salary that counts towards the cap will then still count towards the salary cap.
@JoshGinter6 ай бұрын
This is sort of how the cap already works. It's just not talked about in those terms. Everyday of the NHL regular season has a salary cap. And a team must be under it each day. When a team adds someone at the deadline they need to be able to fit that player's salary under the cap only for the the last 8 weeks of the season. When a team is under the cap without LTIR, they actually "accrue" additional cap space that they can use to add a player that is "more expensive" than their daily cap space would imply. Vegas did this 4 seasons ago I think where they were constantly sending Nic Roy, Cody Glass, and Keegan Kolesar back and forth to the AHL on days where they didn't play to accrue extra daily cap space that they wanted to use to potentially acquire someone at the deadline.

@robhart46016 ай бұрын
Brodie, I haven't seen anyone else mention the fact that EVERY NHL playoff team exceeds the "Salary Cap". After the NHL trade deadline, the maximum roster size of 23 active players is eliminated and thus allows an unlimited number of players on the active roster. Until the playoffs start though, they must still stay under the salary cap for the active roster. Now, once playoffs start, every NHL team recalls their top backup players from the minor leagues to start practicing with the starters to prepare them for next man up situations, thus activating 30+ players total or more is common practice easily raising their active player salaries an additional 5 to 8 million (theoretically of course since there is no paid salary during the playoffs). Since the CAP is calculated using activated players on the roster not just the 20 players that skate during a game, I don't see a single playoff team that doesn't exceed the CAP. For those that don't know, playoff teams are paid a lump sum the further they make it into the playoffs. The more they win the more money they make (although the dollar amount may be peanuts compared to their seasonal salaries.)

Yep. Stone will be back for Game 1, and he'll be laughing in the first frame of the TV coverage...Look, I don't care about the load management part of this. Skirting the cap is a different animal though, and this is totally on the league. VGK has been the cardshark in the casino ever since it took the first faceoff. Ironic that it happens in Vegas, a town full of cardsharks who get banished, and once upon a time got their knuckles mulched with a sap by bouncers. Counting cards is not illegal (unless of course it's done with counters and other mechanical or audio/visual aids) but it is completely unethical and eventually gets dealt with by the offended party. But this is an entirely fixable loophole if the league would grow a pair and close it. Why should the salary cap be different in post-season than during the regular season, let alone not even exist? I also don't care about whether or not Stone was actually hurt or not. He could take a vacation in Bimini for all I care. I don't want to know his personal medical business or any of that. But the fact that they can juice the team with rental talent and practice them in his absence is shady at best. Do I blame VGK for "breaking the rules"? No. Of course, not. They merely exploited the rules. Do I blame them for being unsportsmanlike? Yeah, I do. But then again in this win at any cost environment, this is small fry in the world of pro sports. And try not to go through your whole life being a bitter baby. You're only making yourself miserable. We've all got our struggles so nobody's that concerned about yours.

Two solutions 1. make the cap enforceable in the playoffs OR 2. if you are LTIR in game 82 you cannot appear in the first round of the playoffs. That stops the abuse. And yes the VGK are not the only ones but they are the current worst.
@DiogenesTheCynic.6 ай бұрын
Neither are solutions, because the GMs don't want a "solution".

Here part of a quote for those thinking it doesn’t matter if it’s technically not cheating. Regarding 2013 … “cap-circumventing contracts of the last several years, which violated the spirit of the salary cap”. You see there’s this thing called the “spirit of the salary cap.” So, if this many hockey professionals question it, how can anyone say the spirit of the rules have not been broken?

The golden knights not long ago were in a fight to stay in the Wildcard race. If stone had returned when we was likely able to .... the Knights would have had to play a much reduced roster. This has absolutely tarnished the credibility of the league as a whole. Not to mention the team doctor that signed off that he remained injured. also its a pretty disgusting look on the stone. to willingly sit out as their team struggled the past few weeks is pretty pathetic. the whole thing is gross. Brodie is right. the NHL needs to adjust this rule and its so simple. The team needs to dress a cap compliant roster in the playoffs. there. solved.

well you can keep crying because it won't happen for 2 years when the next CBA talks begin.

Circular logic. You pointed out yourself that Vegas was in a" fight" to even make the second wild card until very recently. So this means the Vegas "master plan" was to sit out their captain and one of the best two way defensive forwards in the league, for EIGHT+ weeks in order to disrupt team/line chemistry by inserting 3 totally new players (two average players and an INJURED A-level player)? NO ONE who knows anything about professional hockey and pro athletes would do this because... you said it yourself... it's not how you win games as evidenced by Vegas fighting for their lives to even make the playoffs... Stone's injury didn't help Vegas. It likely is a big reason why they might have to play the #1 Seed in the first round. And the second piece of their evil plan is to now throw Stone back into the lineup after not playing for 8+ weeks against Dallas or EDM??? If you recall, last year it took Stone two rounds to get his legs. Just close the loophole so we won't have to listen to this kind of ridiculous speculation about whether an injury is real. I suppose we can all wonder if Eichel really had a neck injury? He seemed perfectly fine when he returned. Perhaps he just faked it to get on a better team...

A player that is on ltir at the trade deadline, and still on ltir on the last game, shouldn’t be able to play for the first series. Either that or apply the salary cap for the playoffs based on the regular season salaries.
@kartzstormstool8616 ай бұрын
I'm sure that will be brought up at the next CBA negotiations in 2 years.

There should be some kind of minimum games played to qualify to play for the playoffs. If Stone doesn't play a certain number of games in the regar season, he has to watch the playoffs fro. The press box.

Unless they pay players in the playoffs,.then there is no fix. Owners won't want yo do that and what about the other teams that dont make the cut? Do they just get shafted? The real fix is a luxury tax system
