I was really hoping to be done with the fossil turtle skull for the Maker's Challenge but this crab will do nicely! It was a really fun prep and the air abrasion unit did such a good job on those sticky bits!

Fantastic little fossil and great prep! I know it's a silly question and it might be impossible, but have you ever tried to expose the mouth parts? I would love to see if those preserve or not...I know we are talking very fine features, but it would be cool if you could expose them to some degree. Have you tried that? Or will it damage the specimen too much to do that?

So, these pyrite crabs. Are the shells converted to pyrite by the chemistry from these millions of years, or is it that the compounds and elements that slowly leech from the carapace chemically react with the dirt and create a layer on top of the carapace to create a pyrite crust?

An excellent job, as always. Was the painted on stuff a glue of sorts? Did the dolomite powder act like sand-blasting? And, I don’t mean to horrify you, but do you ever crack open a rock with your hammer, like Theo, to see if it contains treasures? Thank you whether or not you have time to answer.
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the dolomite powder is like millions of tiny hammers knocking the matrix away. I painted B72 paraloid on to keep the carapace from flaking as the air from the air scribe can sometimes cause that. I don't usually crack rocks open, if it is already cracked I might open it up but I tend to look for clues on the outside of the rocks.
