EDIT: Yes I am aware I said Takahashi worked on Final Fantasy while at ENIX, I understand this was before the Square merger so it was not possible. It was a flub on my part :)

The first Golden Sun is actually the reason I met my best friend. I heard him mention it in English class in school back in 2003 and because I was also playing it we struck up a conversation about it. 18 years later we’re still best friends, I’ve been the best man at his wedding and he’s going to be best man at mine. The Summon risk vs reward system was my favorite part of Golden Sun. I hope to get at least a collection for the Switch soon.
@straypaper3 жыл бұрын
Sadly in all three games summons became just a gimmick. You either use it to summon rush the boss down, or you just attack like normal. I know they were supposed to give battles a sense of fluctuation between massive Djinn unleash phase, summon phase, and then defensive phase until your Djinni are done recovering. But the stat gap between Djinn on and Djinn off is just too great to justify using summon separately and not as a summon rush tactic. The stat gap and the class system is also another reason why summoning is just not a sustainable gimmick. Yes the tri-element classes are powerful, but once you use Granite to survive an attack, you're screwed down to some random low tier class. Of course everyone is going to go mono element because of that. In fact, the Djinn unleash is the more dominant aspect of the gameplay for me. They all have unique effects and you need to distribute them to certain characters based by their speed to minmax your party and enable strategies. If I'm forced to choose between using multi-element classes but locking me out of using Djinn, summoning Judgment but turning my Isaac and Felix into a wimp for the next 3 turns, or using mono-element classes and using Djinni as a toolbox I can unleash and set reliably, guess which tactic I'm going to utilize?
@aessa84403 жыл бұрын
@@straypaper As a child though, it didn't feel like just a gimmick. On the last boss of the second game it took me literally a few tries to understand what I'm trying to do when using my djinn and create duo-element classes to force myself into positions where I can manipulate my characters to both not just die from the last boss's attack sequences, but also do enough damage to kill the thing without having all of my characters die. Nowadays, Plexa and other big speedrunners for the game trivialize the combat, but it was addictingly fun and interesting when first encountered.
@Rainhands223 жыл бұрын
There was no risk to summons, it made the game incredibly easy unless you were fighting a boss.

@@straypaper except mono element classes are among the weakest lol both in PvE and PvP when i was a dumb kid i did stick to mono element classes but as i learned more about game's mechanics it became obvious it's not the way to go, the difference in performance is staggering and i can't go back to playing mono classes You can still use Djinni as other classes, it's just that you have to use your brain while doing it - but quite often you don't even need to because the dual and tri element classes are so much more powerful in both sheer stats and stronger, more varied and available earlier psynergies. Personally i loved dual elemental classes the most which means having most Djinni in the synergistic element while only some of your own - 6+1 or 7+2 - to be precise, it was Brute and Sage lines. Especially in TLA and DD where equipment and weapons were much more powerful.

To be fair GS can get pretty monotone if you insist on playing on mono-element class. I'm sure by Doom Dragon every player is going to use Felix with Sol Blade, Isaac with Gaia Blade, Jenna with whatever, and Ivan with whatever. Felix is going to spam unleash Megiddo, Isaac is going to spam Titan Blade or just cast Odyssey, Jenna is going to spam Cool Aura, and Ivan is just there to put High Impact up and then defending. Same thing with Dark Dawn but replace the party with Matthew, Sveta, Karis, and Rief. There's just not many optimal setup unless you're willing to go tri-element and lock yourself out of using Djinn. If only using Djinn doesn't change class mid battle, I'm sure GS would be more variable in party build.
@typicalswine77793 жыл бұрын
@@straypaper I actually preferred Amiti over Rief. I would typically keep Tyrell in my party as a ronin, Matthew as a ninja, Karis as my heal support as a sorceress (whatever the actual title is using Jupiter and mercury djinn) running fresh wind whenever somebody got low, and finally Amiti as a Guru for offensive spell support. Alex does not "blur the lines between good and evil," from the start he's an ambitious psychopath who is only barely able to hide his true personality and motivation from Felix and crew. As a psychopath, he manipulates Felix's party into doing the work for them, and does not help at all. Golden Sun is FULL of situations where you are forced to sympathize with the enemy (the entire premise of the Lost Age is that you ARE the putative villains of the first game and opposed by that game's heroes, but we see that the motivations of Felix & co were good the entire time, and in the end he and Isaac, his nemesis, join forces.) This is NOT the case with Alex: on the contrary, we see Alex's behavior go from aloof and manipulative, to the final revelation of his true motivation at the Golden Sun event at Mt. Aleph that concludes Lost Age. Alex is granted immortality, indestructibility, and ultimate power. Then Mt. Aleph collapse on this psychopathic immortal, burying him under millions of tons of rock. Alex is the only character in the series (which is all about having sympathy for your enemy) who is truly and unambiguously evil, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer person. Its interesting that, Alex being the psychopatgic manipulator that he is, we never actually fight him in Lost Age: he actually appears to win, being "blessed" with power from the Golden Sun Event, only to be given his comeuppance by the Wise One. But to reiterate, Alex does _not_ "blur the lines between good and evil." He is the _only character in the series who is unambiguously evil._

The thing that stuck out to me the most was how in Dark Dawn, if you had a character set to attack an enemy that a different character downed before their turn, they would attack a different enemy, whereas in the GBA games, that character would simply defend on their turn. It made battles that little bit less frustrating in that you were guaranteed to only defend of you chose to, but it also took out some of the planning of your turn in battle. I liked that I didn't have to essentially waste a character's turn, but it also messed with planning to take out the last enemy with an element it's weak to. Why was that the thing that stuck with me the most about battle differences? I don't know.

I’m sad I found the Golden Sun franchise with Dark Dawn. I loved the game only to have it be in this situation. I know my wife would also absolutely love a new game. I started watching this video and she instantly knew the music and grabbed the little clay djinns she made back when we first met.

I like Golden Sun, but my #1 dream in the gaming space is a true revival of Shining Force, lead by Camelot. Chances of it happening are approximately 0.00001%, but nothing in gaming would get me more excited. I expect that Camelot will do nothing but Mario Sports games (which I don't care about, at all) for the remainder of their existence.

A remake/remaster of the three GS games would be a good way to introduce them to the new generation of gamers today. Doing a 4th one would confuse newbies alike since those three games rely on each other for the lore and terms these games used. But then again, I'm all up for a 4th one. 😂

Duuude I just played dark sun again last week!! The main struggle I have with it that they would need to fix is permanently missable djinn. Totally messed me up when I found out there were some I couldn't get that were easily missed world map encounters so I couldn't take my run to 100% completion without restarting and using a guide :/ outside of that, incredible series!
@lindendrache89983 жыл бұрын
So true, I just bought a copy of Dark Dawn a few weeks ago, to finally play the 3rd part of the series (never had a DS back when it came out) - I absolutely played the hell out of part 1 and 2, they were amazing. I also like part 3, it has the same feeling and mechanics I like. But those permanently missable things like djinns and summons are crap. And the worldmap is crap - why are there no marks for visited locations?? It is so easy to miss stuff and get lost. The worldmap in the first two games could be zoomed, etc. and locations were marked - great feature!
@Progeusz2 жыл бұрын
It's one of many disappointing aspects of Dark Dawn - lots of "Points of no Return" with permanently missable Djinni and other things. Meanwhile it was pretty much a trademark of previous two titles that you could come back to old areas later, had a lot of freedom in terms of where to go, you were actually incentivized to do so and some sub plots only happened when you checked out old areas with new psynergies.

There was something really pure, earnest, and solid about Golden Sun compared to other RPGs. Some games feel like they combine a good story with traditional RPG gameplay in an attempt checks all the boxes of RPGs before it. Golden Sun feels like its RPG gameplay takes a responsibility to be enjoyable.

I love the Golden Sun series ever since my mom got me into it so many years ago. Though it took me a while to actually complete all of them, they still remained a favorite of mine for a very long time. And while I do still love them, I have to admit that the series has a lot of glaring problems. The story is honestly not that compelling in the long run. Sure, when you start out you have this grand sense of wonder and you really want to know what happens next, but at the end of every Golden Sun you're just left wanting more. And I don't mean in the good way. I'll excuse GS1 because they intended a sequel when it was released, but Lost Ages really left a hollow feeling for me. Yay, I lit the lighthouses and brought peace to the world, but the real bad guy is still out there and I'm not the one who gets the final confrontation with him. And Dark Dawn literally ends on a cliff hanger, though I assume that was going to be resolved in a sequel. It especially hurts for Lost Ages because, even though I enjoyed playing the game I know that it wont resolve in a satisfying manner so I just dont feel up to playing it. To end on a high note though, I absolutely love the world building in this game. I love how it's based on medieval concepts like alchemy and even have a flat world where you can see the edges of the world. I think that is super cool and it'd be awesome to explore those concepts more. I also thought the battle system and Djinns were really fun to mess around with, and the puzzles were top notch.

There is a lot of potential for this series to grow like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy did. But I do agree that the story is pretty meh. If they ever did a remake of the first two, I would heavily recommend doing a bit more with the stories and especially the characters. They aren't bad, but could be better.
@pancakeslapp3 жыл бұрын
Tbh I feel like the story is fairly good for the most part, it's when you get to the ending of TLA (which you touch on) that it feels like there are missing plot points, or rather points that come up that are never resolved really. Like Alex at the end of TLA is hardly touched on at the beginning of Dark Dawn, much less TLA itself. Even now I'm left wondering, "what became of that?"

I LOVE the first two Golden Sun games. They remain as two of my favourite games up to this day, but I also think that if a fourth instruments was to happen, it would need to change and adapt to the new times. That could either be great or bad: it could push what we already love from the game and transform it into something innovative, better and even more fascinating, or it could lose its spirit in the impossible try to create a fans + stockholders pleaser. No matter what happens, GS 1 and 2 will still be in my heart and nothing can change that!

Being my most favourite RPG, I really hope for a reboot on the Switch as well as for a nice sequel...for me Dark Dawn felt like the first part felt in comparison to the lost age: something is missing storywise. So I hope Nintendo and Camelot get to fill that gap and bring the story to an end :)

Actually, I think the time, and market are just right for a new Golden Sun, be it a fresh game or remake along the lines of the upcoming Advance Wars. There's been a huge resurgence in popularity for traditional RPGs since around 2017, and turn-based games like Persona 5, Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default 2 have continued to outperform sales projections. Add on to that the fact that people who are likely nostalgic for Golden Sun are reaching their mid-late 20s and early 30s, and you have a recipe for a big comeback. If Fire Emblem can come back from the brink and be a smash success, I think Isaac and the gang can, too

As old fashioned as it's claimed to be, Golden Sun has always had one advantage over every other rpg ever in the history of ever, as far as I know; shopkeepers offer to buy old equipment when you get a new piece of gear from them. I have literally never seen that in any other game, despite what a huge convenience it is! More seriously, I'm hopeful for a new Golden Sun eventually. The problems with Dark Dawn had little to do with its gameplay. The class system is still fantastic and has yet to be matched, as far as I'm concerned. As for the genre being dead, I'm not buying that. Good single player rpgs are always nice.

Damn, I want a new Golden Sun so bad! Lost Age was my first JRPG and it's still one of my most favourite JRPGs and games in general. It's a huge shame Nintendo doesn't do anything with the series. I will always hope they make a new Golden Sun or at the very least remake the first two/three.

Def one of my favorite GBA titles of all time. Easily a top tier RPG, especially the second one. The third one wasn't very memorable, but I remember buying a DS just to play it, and shortly selling it after. I'd love for them to release a more difficult Golden Sun-esque RPG. Add in some gore and high risk decisions, like xcom. Now you have something more modern. I agree traditional RPGs are a dying genre. Lots of gamers I've talked to hate turn based fighting. I do too when it is not challenging and therefore doesn't require much strategy/timing. Thanks for this video, I think I'll do a Golden Sun playthrough this year.
