Langar is much more than a community kitchen. When you eat this food, your karma is settled and you can feel near to God. Those who work in kitchen or perform various volunteering duties(also known as SEVA), one can settle a huge chunk of pending karma. It really helps in reducing mental and emotional sufferings of a person to a huge extent. It is so because it's a service to God by serving those created by him. Really glad to see you washing dishes. You have no idea how much of a previous lifetimes of karma you have settled. Not everyone can do SEVA. Only who have sublimated there ego can do it. The langars take place at every gurudwara in the world, each one run by selfless sewa givers. I sometimes go to one in Glasgow, Scotland where I live.
