Hi Guys, Just turn on "CC" Captions/subtitles if my instruction is not clear. How do you do on the quiz? Let me know if you any questions. You may appreciate It like a pro now🤓, not just say “nice Ranchu”; you go deeper saying “oh, looks like Kyoukai-kei Japanese Ranchu” 😄

I bought 50 Ranchu & Lionhead Fry today from a really kind and knowledgeable gentleman on Gumtree / Craigstlist, I wasn't expecting him to be so professional and helpful but he had caught hundreds from his pond and sorted them into bins for me to choose different colours and pick an assortment 🥺🥰 It was so sweet, he was an older Chinese man and wanted to make sure i knew how to feed them and he shared all the pictures he had of the parents and the generations they all came from, showed me the differences between each type and colour etc like you're explaining in this video, there was so much detail i couldn't remember it all but I feel like I have to research now that someone shared their passion with me so openly, It was so awesome to buy from a hobbyist and breeder who cared so much about his fish, Grandfather Goldfish I shall call him :D

Hello dear Lei, fantastic this video on the differences in shape, coloring, of these fish. Your conference is very well done and you explain well the differences and the characteristics they must have, I did not know many things like the differences between those of China and Japan..I did not know that this selection also existed in Thailand. Beautiful tables, traditional patterns and designs ... very nice the final quiz. Thanks for this wonderful job.

I've been keeping and breeding goldfish for more than a decade already, and I can tell my eyes are not yet really that good in determining what's the difference between those rachu's varieties, I might fell in your quiz sir😂...Ranchu's are difficult to find here in my place, that's why I only have few. Thank you for your humble comments from 🇵🇭. The purpose of this video is to promote goldfish culture and make goldfish keeping more fun. Permutations and changes are the common schema of goldfish. Because of cross breeding, many times it is hard to tell the types. Thanks again CoKi 🙏 and come back often to help my channel improve 🚀

hey! I recognize the name 天山雪!!! He is an OG in the Lanshou forums and his series on 攻鹅 made me want to find and breed 鹅顶红 in America. Great videos man! I would also like introductions to all the individual Chinese traditional types that we don't see often here in America. You are doing great work giving exposure to the more traditional Chinese breeds in the other videos.

Hi James, 天山雪 is a friend of mine. He is one of key goldfish influencers promoting Ranchu and traditional Chinese breeds. To my knowledge, “Goldfish Kingdom” is the only store that imports Goosehead. However due to Covid-19, it is quite challenging now. Yes, one of my goals is not to promote Chinese goldfish here in the US but also let people know more about each breed. On My 23, I will post a video talking about traditional Kirin Goldfish 麒麟金鱼. 敬请关注,谢谢🙏。常联系,你在哪个城市?多保重 👍

@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 3 жыл бұрын
depends on who you talk with. Many people only heard the terms from others but never know the origin. If I tell you the truth, I may make you confused further unless you speak Chinese. For Chinese hobbyists, lionhead (狮子头) has dorsal fin when lionhead used as body term; lionhead also used to describe wen or head growth. For modern Chinese goldfish society, 虎头金鱼 is more like a ranchu but 虎头金鱼 has flat back.

If you ask what the main streams of ranch, I can freak down to the three main styles that I discussed on my vid. Goldfish are full of changes. You can cross breed into any types and any forms. The key question can you name or classify them as a new breed? If a stain of certain goldfish satisfies the follow criteria, then We may consider this stain as a breed. (1) special attributes in body shape, color, Wen, or eye, (2) relative stable inheritance, the keeper ratio should not be lower than 0.5% (3) get some culture background behind the main attribute, (4) public acceptance, a certain number of goldfish keepers hobbyists accept it and breed it.
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 3 жыл бұрын
Now back to your first question. Do you mean 狮子头? flat back without a dorsal fin, lots of Wen growth?

@dennetofferman371 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lei. I am currently making a Facebook page dedicated to goldfish with wens and I would like some of your knowledge on there if I may. I also have a question: what is the difference between a Lionhead and the Uno- Kei Ranchu. Are they two separate breeds or are they the same thing? If they are different, how? I would love to know more. Greetings, Dennet
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 3 жыл бұрын
Dennet, sure. let us know your FB link. There are two breeds. Both of them have massive wen, but the difference is on the back. Chinese Lionhead has flat straight back. While UnoKei has curved back like other ranchu.

@@GoldfishCorner my wife started having an aquaruim last quarter of 2020 unfortunately it was ill prepared started with 9 goldfish then we lost them all by july 2021 that's why we are reviving the aquaruim but doing the right basic setup this month.
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 2 жыл бұрын
@jose marie mercurio I see. What I would suggest is to start from simple or basic but not fancy goldfish with a bulk body. For instance, you may try *red-cap oranda* and *fantail goldfish* . These types of goldfish have a more natural body shape and easy to maintain than fancy goldfish (Ranchu or pearlscales). The other reason is that ranchu are expensive, and you don't have to pay that much tuition to learn goldfish keeping. After you keep the redcap oranda or fantail goldfish for over 1 year with no more fish dead, you may move to the fancy goldfish world. Keep a strong heat. Remember you will make some goldfish passed away unintentionally due to entry-level skills. However, *keep it up and don't give up. That is how we learn goldfish* . I started with my goldfish keeping from red-cap oranda and fantail.

Hi Lei ... great video! I have a question. The Japanese fish the Edo Nishiki; where does it fit into the classification? Is it not considered a ranch type fish? There are so many variations and for someone like me I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination so I'm guessing that it arose as a separate mutation event just coincidentally has morphology that is "ranchu-like" or did it actually arise from a ranchu bloodline?

Good question. Edo Nishiki or 江户锦 is a hybrid /cross breed between Ranchu and Calico Oranda or 东锦. Since it is a hybrid, I did not count it here. Edo Nishiki (江户锦) has 2 unique features: calico color and relatively long tail. The modern Japanese Ranchu only has red and white color.

@@GoldfishCorner Awesome! Knew you'd have the the answer. Thanks! Out of curiosity, was there something specific that original breeder of the Edo Nishiki was looking to correct by crossing the two? It seems counterintuitive to cross a 'stable' mutation that had been achieved - the fin-less dorsal ridge back to a fish that had the dorsal fin ... wouldn't that just reintroduce the dorsal fin genes back into the variant bloodline that had only really begun to stablise?

OK. Let’s go deeper. You asked questions around the purpose of cross-breeding and the gene stabilization. While typing to you, I’m think to make a video to talk about this breed Edo Nishiki. Let me be concise. The purpose of cross-breed is always to add one attribute from one breed to another. Three features from Calico Oranda can be added to Ranchu. Dorsal fin, calico color, and long tail. Japanese breeders consider Ranchu is more “advanced” than any other breeds. So they did not try to add the dorsal fin back to Ranchu. Indeed, they want to add calico color. During many years of culling, they culled any Edo Nishiki with dorsal fin. The gene is relatively stable, however it is still a niche breed. For any Edo Nishiki with long tail, they called 京锦.

@@GoldfishCorner I truly find all of this fascinating. So from a breeding/genetic perspective though inefficient is it often found to be advantageous to risk the reintroduction of a trait like the lack or presence of a dorsal fin into a bloodline gain, as you say, the calico trait and then live with the fact that for a few generations your offspring yields will be less than idea while you apply an artificial selective pressure on the downstream generations to not only optimise the new calico trait in subsequent generations but at the same time minimise the occurrence of the reintroduced gene's expression. I wonder as well as if these kinds of back crosses also act to reinvigorate a breeds potentiality; meaning as we apply more successive generations of artificial selective pressure we are actually losing genetic variability - for instance in the TVR breeds or the Thai Ranchu bloodlines as we push them mmore closely resemble the standardised ideal versions of their breeds should we perhaps be back crossing them to one or more of their distant percentages to gain back some of the variability they have lost. We are only aware of traits that have physical morphology e.g. a fin or length of fin or shape of body but surely there are sets of genes lost that didn't manifest their expression in a visible way ... say genes that code for an enzyme that aids in digestion but wasn't critical at the time so it went in noticed until several decades later. Do or should breeders make a habit in the maintenance of a bloodline or breeding line to apply these back crosses to an earlier varient so that they don't with whittle the line down so much that it becomes unviable or worse fails all together and thus loose key mutations or breeds outright. I'm thinking of the Blue Egg Phoenix or the Tosakin or the Philadelphia Veil-Tail as examples where we have squeaked by without total loss but because we're dealing with highly modified fish from such very small surviving population wouldn't it be prudent to do something like that reintroduce some more "wild" genes and decrease a breeds chance of failure down the road and/or even lock in those traits into non-commercial sets of fish lines so that we have essentially a gene bank in case of genetic failure, war, or fish version of covid-19 or disastrous volcanic or earthquake event? I know from my experience in the agrifood industry we have gene banks around the world for all commercially important crops like corn, potatoes, wheat etc. including all current varieties and as many historic cultivars and even the original parent species that gave rise to them along with their very closely related relatives. Is it time we start to protect not only the breeds we currently have commercially but also start to isolate and separate all the current desirable mutations so we can if need be call upon one or more of them to plug a hole in the goldfish story that was deleted inadvertantly due to a weakening of the stock or lost due to disease or disaster. I tend to ramble and I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest it or express it as a concern. This wonderful fish has a hundreds and in some cases thousands of years of cultural influence on the Chinese and Japanese sense of beauty and aesthetics and artistic cultural traditions. It would be tragic if another page or whole chapter is list such as it is for the Osaka Ranchu ... just think if there was a small remenant population of fish somewhere in a garden pond South Korea that had gone unnoticed since the 19th century and swimming about was a small group of red and white wen-less fish with short tail and pompoms but had reestablished the dorsal fin ... how easy it would be to verify their being direct remnants of one of the Osaka Ranchu variants and get rid of that dorsal ... and have a true Osaka Ranchu.

@@goldfishlover.6734 Wow, we need to write a scientific paper on this topic. These are all valid concerns. I am not sure I have all the answers but I can share some of my thoughts. did you get a chance to read this Nature paper - www.nature.com/articles/srep34849? "Goldfish... has twice the number of chromosomes (n = 50) than zebrafish (n = 25)" I am less concerned about the goldfish gene since they have as twice many as common fish. The first thing we need to do as a goldfish community is document these breeds including all the history, traits, and breeding history. With the permutation of the goldfish gene, we can make new and recover the old one. For instance, you talk about BEP. All the BEP in the mainland of China are not authentic due to the grand culture revolution. However, the Chinese breeders are still able to recover it gradually. In terms of keeping pure blood or crossing breeding, there are different schools of opinions. I think we need both.
