I wish all reporters would have been forced to watch this video back in 2008. Might have helped prevent out current situation - self fulfilling prophecy. Eli and I discussed this back in 2010 just before he passed away Great operations thinker!

Really informative video but I do have a burning question on this. Are we making an assumption that the supply chain will return to 'normal' purchasing trends? What actually prevents them from repeating the same trend... i.e. to purchase further stock and sit on that for another 3-4 months.

The issue I see with this is that it is predicated on the idea that consumer in this system really never stops buying and that you can entice them with price cuts flushing the inventories in the system. Surely in recessions just as companies flush inventories to ride out the recession people tighten their belts on discretionary spending. Recession can continue for long periods and it isn't as if they are predictable or appear with fixed known wavelength. So the fact that one firm laid off people and another didn't, both had equal chance of doing the right thing at the time would you say? Only hindsight shows one to be a better choice than the other! Such is nature of systems with long delayed feedback loops.

this is an example... the issue is that you again only look locally at this example. the message is look globally!! if another time there is more than flushing inventories then you can use the brain to find out further reasons and react again globally...

I think that you are both right in your assessment...contradiction? No there isn't any. If you use the evaporating cloud as a framework of thinking then my point becomes obvious. I would love to analyse the current situation in global oil and gas markets during / post COVID-19. Are you up for a challenge?
