Cattle scratching posts and brushes that are not built very strong do not last even a season. It is not easy building strong brush supports and any brushes installed are worn out quickly.

@@frankkolmann4801 Brushes for cattle is just part of the expense of owning cattle. My grandfather always made sure that his cattle had access to a big sturdy tree when he kept cattle. He also kept some burlap soaked in oil hanging up for them to give them some relief from the #@#@! flies.

Brushes for the Moo Crew, complete with trailer cameras ! It's great that you're considering getting friends for Baby Bea. I was wondering how it'd work out for her, being the only birth on your farm this year, plus it's always fun to welcome new animals ! I wonder if you could get a white one (...not the one you were about to buy previously, obviously) for more diversified genetics.

An idea for your keeping your water trough from freezing. If you have a compost pile... store it around your watering troughs. The heat from the materials breaking down, will prevent the water from freezing. Hope this helps!
@russellhltn1396 Жыл бұрын
Nice idea! I was thinking about a solar panel (not PV, but the older water heating kind). If positioned low, it could circulate water by convection making it 100% electricity-free. It probably wouldn't need to be a very big panel to prevent freezing.

I love that hoop house. It's like a big recreation room for the birds during the day, where they can all hang out and chat. I could see you adding a much smaller structure inside it where they could congregate to share body heat during the winter nights. That's in addition to the weird chicken hut you already have in there.
@ValleyOakPaper Жыл бұрын
Last year Morgan had the mobile chicken coop in there and some of the chickens slept in there. Having some sort of larger structure inside, as you say, would probably relieve some of the pressure on the weird chicken coop.

I know all the birds are happy and grateful for that hoop coupe, look how well they get along. Glad you figured out how to fix the waterline, and are you thinking about some kind of heating device for the cows drinking source, I believe they do make them. Always love to check in, so thanks Morgan for taking us along after the first snow, see you soon.

When you pull the burrs out of the cows hair & throw it on the ground you're just spreading the seeds to another area of your farm. I use to have a plastic bag in my pocket & put the burdocks in that, then throw it in the garbage can at the end of the day.

Morgan, I think this was an excellent video. I love when you add little clips from tv shows and movies, it makes things a little more interesting. That said, uh oh lol, the piano music around minute 11:55 was anxiety inducing. I just thought I'd let you know. I love seeing the way you rig up water lines and cattle fencing. Such an ADHD way of doing things and I would be doing exactly the same as you. I have ADHD so I totally get it. I am going to recommend you try getting a sponsorship from that company that makes brushes for cattle. I don't know if Jason Smith at Cog Hill Farm did, but he definitely got a screw in the ground brush and Brooke found a place to buy old street sweeper brushes really cheap and the cows and goats use it the same. He's made a few videos about it.

I'm so glad you got all your chores done before the snow. I was a little late putting up my patio furniture, but the brief respite we got last week was enough. Up here in Newport, my 1939 house doesn't have a steel roof (I decided against it for gutter/trim purposes), but it is a much steeper pitch. My bedroom is on the 1/2 story right under the roof, and the first few years I was here, the "roof glaciers" scared the crap out of me! I thought the house was coming down! I'm so glad we're getting snow! Time to go up to Jay Peak!

You can use a smooth soccerball or volleyball or something like that and put in the cows water = the water will never freeze completely and its easier to break and the cows will always access water when there always is a hole in the ice under the ball since it moves around a little bit all the time. I used to do this for my horses water in the winter up here in Finland back in the day. Works perfectly 👌

i worked in masonry for many years as lead labor handling everything that the bricklayers needed to lay block and work even during the coldest winter days, a big issue was having the water ready for mixing. if i forgot to drain the hose at night and it froze it was a huge problem so i asked my boss to get an adjustable heater for the water bin we would plug in over night. i know this would mean running an extension of some kind or buying a more expensive solar version but it would ensure you would never have to worry about water freezing for your animals again.

Keeping Frankie with the chickens has pros and cons. The added protection of the goose is awesome, but he won't have access to water to swim, right? And a pool could be dangerous for the chickens. That's my initial thought. But I don't think it's a bad idea! Excited to see how it all continues! Wishing you all the luck and warmth this winter

You might want to check out Doss Farms. Chad Doss had a cow he wanted to breed with a specific bull. However, momma cow chose otherwise. Through the fence that separates his property of 20 cows, and the neighbor's property, Chad's female cow bred with a bull angus from the neighbor's herd. Through the fence. That said, it's possible breeding can take place even though you think the bulls are separated from the heifers. Therefore, it may be a penny wise and a pound foolish action to make a sizeable break between the 2 groups.

Oh yes, I'd definitely mount some brushes on that post. There's literally no reason not to; you know they love it, and it helps their coats stay fluffy and warm. Heck, you could even find a way to hang one horizontally somewhere, so they can scratch that hard-to-get area on their backs :) As a farmer's daughter, I hope that you don't mind my having the occasional chuckle as you go through the learning process; it's okay, the learning curve is steep, and I chuckle with love. Anyone who thinks running a farm isn't skilled work has never met a farmer. Good for you--keep at it, you're a fast learner and you're doing great.

To prevent the water troughs from freezing drill a hole 1/2 - 2/3 the depth of the trough add a waterproof bung with internal threads the same threads that are on a resistance heating elements for a residential water heater then just thread the element in the side of the tank. Use a low temperature thermostat to only send electricity to the heating element when the tank is 40F or lower and above 40F it shuts off. You still want the water in the trough to be ice cold as it is providing cooling so the element does not melt your plastic bung or plastic tank. If you cannot find a low temp thermostat you can uses a timer to cycle on and off 'X' minutes per hour. Other options are a very large bubble stone in the bottom of the tank with a small compressor used for extra large fish tanks, the bubbles as they surface keep the water moving preventing freezing. People who have lake homes and do not want to take their docks for winter in will use a submersible pump and a couple nozzles under the dock that create boils in the water, a nozzle or two is weighted to the bottom with the pump and the nozzles are aimed straight upward creating a strong boil of moving water, moving water freezes at a much lower temperature.

Yes give them brushes! It brings them joy and us entertainment, lol If you place the electric water heater inside a cinderblock it won't melt the bottom of the rubber water tank and will keep the cows from touching it. Run the electrical line up and over the back side and under the fence to the outside of their pen.
