With your permaculture orchard still growing, Grazing cows there isn't a good idea. Cows love to munch the leaves and branches of young trees, so if you let them graze there they're gonna mow down your orchard and you'll have to start it all over again. So it may be necessary to let them graze somewhere else, at least until the trees are large enough to prevent the cows from destroying them. Once they're grown, these trees will be good source of shade for your cows in summer (I don't know how hot it can get on your side, but from my experience cattle tend to struggle with heat )

The wee heilan coo is probably perfect for Morgan too, since in the Scottish Highlands they were originally bred to have two-three cows per smallholding [crofts] to make the most of poor grazing and limited manpower. The horns make them not only, paradoxically, easier to handle [crofters would literally pull them around by the horns], but also provided touristware items to sell at the end of the animals natural life. So even those horns can help make a little extra money. They can be one of the more vocal breeds of cattle, this is an obsolete predator defense from the days the Scottish Highlands still had wolves and bears in them-much like Tobydog's barking it told potential predators there was a big and active animal nearby and the predator ought to find an easier meal, but with all the coyotes around, that probably works in the favor too.

I saw a programme on TV a few years back a cattle farmer in the U.S. after his cattle had been on part of a pasture he would move them on using an electric fence, then move mobile chicken coops onto the already grazed land which he lets out during the daytime, the chickens disperse the cow pats looking for maggots, the end result is a better quality pasture and a huge reduction in flies.

I bought a herd when I got into grass fed beef. It is the fastest way to buy someone else's problems. Honestly the best thing you could do is buy some yearling. Buying from different place one at a time is actually best it gives you more genetic diversity in a small herd. Also don't buy anything with horns. Belted Galloway are the easiest best grass feed beef cows to find in the area. I am located in NH and have the same market. Not to be depressing but cows well eat one square bale of hay a day each. You have to get them 2 years old to reach slaughter weight without grain they just grow slower. I can tell you I honestly lose money on my grass feed beef. The hay I feed them would bring more money selling it to my hay customers than the beef brings. I only keep them because I grew up with cows and like them plus they do eat hay I can't sell. I can either keep cows for poor quality hay or sell it for mulch which would be more profitable but I like cows. But please think long and hard about the idea of buying a herd it will cause you more problems. The best thing you could do is find 2 yearling somewhere then add more. Oh also before buying Highlanders please find someone selling their beef Smith Hill farms in London NH is the only place I can think of. But it has a definitely different flavor. I had one cow half highlander and one of my grass fed beef customers didn't like the flavor. People either love it or hate it. Galloway doesn't have that issue.

That's some really great info. The reason I opted against the belted galloways is because of their size and time to maturity. It's less efficient when compared to a smaller breed.
@DanA-nl5uo
@DanA-nl5uo 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoldShawFarm you can get pure Galloway cattle instead they are bigger than the belties the size or normal beef cows. There is someone in southern NH who keeps posting them on craigslist in the spring white ones I have be tempted to go pick up some but honest I make more money selling the hay for people with horses so my beef herd shrinking doesn't bother me. I think Highlanders also are a very slow growing breed. I actually think it has more to do with being 100% grass fed the nutrient balance is different and I think makes cows grow slower or maybe more natrual rate. Grain feeds are mixed to maximize growth. I saw this with the dairy cattle we had when I was a kid. Oh I think I read that too fast. Belted Galloways are smaller in reality. But typically the smaller breeds cost you more when it comes to the butcher fees there are some fixed costs that add up quickly. I tend to take in 2 animals at a time and sell them by the side half the cow. The butcher bill for 2 beef cows will be about the same as I can sell one side of beef for.
@DanA-nl5uo
@DanA-nl5uo 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoldShawFarm oh I forgot to mention I had horns on the first herd I bought and didn't think it would be a problem because we had had some with horns in the dairy herd from time to time. That was a big mistake. The cow who wanted to be herd boss killed 3 calves and 1 cow who was defending the calves before I realized it when they where in the barn for the winter. When they had a full field to run in it was ok the only risk was handling an animal with horns. But once they got stuck in the barn they started pushing each other to set rank and horns punctured ribs. It all happened in a mater of days and that cow was gone very quickly once I figured it out. Horns are very dangerous to you and the herd.

I know it's your farm, but cows will destroy your orchard, ruin your drainage ditches, and all their waste will be flowing right to your pond and sitting in those ditches in your orchard. I am really hoping you consider some goats first, maybe three. you can get milk from them and enjoy their personalities, and since they are fantastic escape artists, you can learn how to better fortify your barn. I am so nervous about you getting cattle, I would think in at least ten years you might consider it, but I am with so many on here that this might not be a good decision. cows are a _lot_ of work, and quite expensive.

TeenDream888 , Where do you live ? Close to a commercial livestock farm ? Because that is what you have described . Not a homestead farm. I once lived in California but I was able to escape in 1994. In California , they brag that they have more dairy cows than any other state , including Wisconsin. Which is likely to be true as I have seen the dairy " farms " of California. At least Southern California. But , they leave out the conditions in which those dairy cows live. In Wisconsin , a dairy farmer may have as many as forty dairy cows on a 200 acre farm with pastures for the cows. In California , the dairy " farms " may have as many as 300 to 500 cows on fifteen acres. The cows spend all of their time standing in urine , feces and mud. The cows never see a blade of grass much less a pasture. These so called dairy farms also milk the cows in rotation, 24 hours a day , seven days a week. That is the kind of operation that you have been describing. Whereas Morgan is talking about five to ten head of beef cattle upon his 250 acres. They would be a total asset to his farm. Especially if he chose to have the Scottish Highland beef cattle ! They are the perfect choice to improve his land and pastures because they not only graze the grass but they will also eat the rough feed such as weeds. I know that Morgan probably has the Canada Thistle growing on his farm. Most cattle will leave it and eat only the sweet grass while the Highland cattle eat it as well as the sweet grass. Highland cattle are also browsers so they will help to clear out the brambles and other brush. As I have said , the Highland cattle are very good for improving the farmland. Yes , they will have to be isolated from the fruit trees. Especially the young trees. AND the Highland beef cattle can also be milked ! I pestered Simeon of Swedish Homestead until he finally did try milking one of his Highland beef cows. Simeon found out that yes indeed they can be milked ! They do not produce as much milk as a dairy cow but they do produce a PREMIUM milk ! Quality versus volume ? They also provide a premium beef which is rated as above the Black Angus. The Queen of England will eat only Highland beef. It's even shipped with her when she travels. If it's good enough for her ............it should also be good enough for us. lol

As someone who has worked with cattle in a variety of ways and settings, my #1 suggestion for anyone getting into the species would be to have the appropriate equipment to handle them (i.e. working shoots, gates, fencing, feeders, etc.) because it makes things so much more difficult without them. So many people make this mistake.Cows can get mean, can hurt you, or even kill you no matter how docile the breed claims to be. Proper equipment saves lives, ensures proper bovine husbandry, and makes working/living together much more effective.

Cows are big, heavy animals. If the ground is at all soft, muddy, or on an incline, it will get torn up. You need to do more research on cow/ acres- do you really have enough acreage to graze the animals without supplemental feeding? Over time, the best plants get grazed down resulting in less grass and more weeds and thorny plants. Then you will need a handling pen with a squeeze chute and loading dock. This pen will have to be extra heavy duty and tall enough so the cow can't jump over it. Without a bull, are you going to artificially inseminate, take the cow to a neighbor's bull, or buy calves and feed them out? Transporting the cow will require a trailer and vehicle to pull it (unless you halter break your cow and can walk her to the neighbors). Your perimeter fence will need to be secure, but the average fence (3-4 strands of barbed wire) can't stand up to a cow that really wants to get out. A new animal needs to be kept up until it gets used to the new home, and needs a herd to be with. You cannot put your cows in your orchard as they will rip off any branches they can reach as well as compacting the soil. A large female with a calf has a potentially dangerous maternal instinct and you cannot outrun a cow. A cow is exponentially many times more expensive than a duck. When a cow gets sick and/or dies, it is a much bigger financial setback and then there is the problem of getting rid of the carcass. You cannot let your cows get to your pond. Cows like to stand in water and also to poop in water. You need to check the laws in your area- if your cow gets out and gets hit by a vehicle, what is your liability? I don't know about your location, but hunters are not above shooting and butchering a calf in the field. As a start, the bare minimum of a start, you need to go work on a neighbor's cattle operation for at least a year.

Yes, their feet need lots of care. BTW about making beef jerky, I made jerky for a while, it was good but to me it was just snack food. Also the cost of the beef and seasoning to make it turned me off. I’d rather have roast beef for a dinner.

Morgan , im a subscriber from Scotland . and so happy to hear you are thinking of the hairy coo for your farm. these hairy highland coos are the best coos in the world, these beasts look after themselves , very low maintenance and verry docile and friendly, your concern of the horns is just, tho not exactly anything to worry about , they know they have them, and they will be aware of you . when feeding they can get exited and that is the only time id say you must look out for the horns. even in birthing . these amazing coos will do the work for you , they will birth their calf and take care of it by them selvs, make sure you have a field for them with long grass , that is where they will birth and hide there little calf . im looking forward to meeting them if your plans come to fruit . sending hugs and love from Glasgow. 🤗😊💚

Do you feel confidant about those posts in the cattle area? They WILL rub and push on any posts around. Some people get these rotating car wash brushers so the cattle use those more because they seem to be always itchy and wanting to rub on posts and scratch.

You are so lucky for the rain you are getting! Plus your field of grass looks so lush! I purchased cattle last December and I tell you nothing goes as planned lol you really learn and figure it out as you go along. But lots of respect to you on taking your time and doing the research ahead of time! In Wisconsin there has been such a major drought this year.. I was not prepared! I’ve had to feed them their winter hay a few weeks while I was trying to expand fencing to other areas to get them access to more food. I’m hoping I can get these guys through the rest of the summer without having to feed them! No rain in 2 weeks with temps 90 degrees for almost a week to come and the grass just is not growing.. first year with cows and ive had many challenges! Good luck to you!

A basic thing to know about moving cattle. When you move cows to a new location they will re-do their social order. If it’s the same cows they typically don’t change the order but they will go through the process just the same. If you mix cows from different herds you need to be more concerned about previous pathogen exposure and vaccination history.

Morgan, Overwintering those horns requires lots of space per animal. Still say Cows on the first floor, slurry on the ground floor. At least copy your friend's winter management practices and be clear why the herd is for sale, friend or not. Being in Scotland we see them around all the time, but not frequently as they are not such a commercial shape or growing prospect. I don't doubt the quality of your research and as you said there comes a time when you dive in! Good luck. Regards Stephen.

You also need something for them to scratch themselves, like a scratching pole, otherwise they'll start using other things and those might not be strong enough for it. You can use pool noodles for the horns if one of them is agressive. I've seen them on goats and it's hella cute.
@crypticmirror
@crypticmirror 3 жыл бұрын
If a cow is aggressive, without a reason anyway-always check for a reason they may be grouchy, then they ought to be culled from the herd. Aggressive cattle are a menace, and they are only fit for a trip to the slaughterhouse. There has been a big problem in the UK lately with, larger scale, farmers not culling aggressive animals from their herds, but instead breeding them, and it has led to some nasty injuries. It is just good animal husbandry.

I did a lot of research on Highland cattle when I was in northern VT and found out some interesting things. The breed apparently tends to like to eat down a lot of the weeds that other cattle breeds don't like. They also said they don't do well with electric fences due to all of their hair insulating them against the fence. If there was a way to get water to them, you could leave them out in the pasture area since they are happy to just tuck in to some trees for shelter in bad or hot weather.

Aren't you worried the cattle are gonna chomp on your baby trees in the orchard? As far as I know, cows don't make difference between grass and saplings. I might be wrong. Maybe you're gonna use those nifty smart-fences to make corridors between the trees so the cows won't reach them. Yeah, I guess that's the plan and that ought to secure the saplings :-)

The onely rwason i know this is because i live on a poultry farm that does butcher chickens and i wanted to butcher pigs and i was told i needed to build a seperat butcher house

I remember when you mentioned this, and you got warned by a lot of people. This is a bad bad idea, Cows require a lot of work, and it doesn't matter if you get one or 100. Anything but horses would have been a better choice, sheep, goats, pigs etc. Once you have no probs with those you should even consider "upgrading" Basically you just added costs to your farm. And your dog might not like it either, as many cows will gang up and attack dogs... If you got lots of money, a big ranch and hired people, then sure go for it.. otherwise.. Just don't..

Simeon at Swedish Homestead, the earlier programs while still in Sweden, show them handling cattle. One funny video - when "the government" ordered them to keep the cattle under shelter in winter. Major blizzard - and they, cattle, refused to move into shelter. Facing fines, he made a comment, something about inviting the "government officials" to come out and put the horned and stubborn cattle in the shelter, they neither wanted or needed, themselves ! The herd was surrounded by large evergreens, windbreak.
