40 years ago, while remodeling a house, I had an old, very heavy steam radiator dropped onto my left foot. I broke several small bones, including the joint before the big toe. I ran a janitor business, on my feet day and night running cleaning crews. Wearing a velcro strapped ski boot from the orthopedic surgeon for several months was the only thing that allowed it to heal. I highly recommend a properly fitting ski boot restraint.

Many years ago I was driving to work, and had a wierd feeling about people having body parts cut off accidentally, then I thought what a stupid thought to have entered my head for no reason. Then spoke to my sister in law in Chicago and she said I guess daughters have some 6th sense and somehow connected to blood relations. Anyways, dad was helping my cousins saw some wood and that slipped and went straight through his boot, almost severed his toe. After he was quickly taken to the emergency room. The surgeon there said the only reason the toe was saved was because he was wearing steel toe boots.

You should see an orthopedic surgeon. The way you injured your foot is how you get a LisFranc fracture, and that's a bigger deal than a broken toe.

@kdallas3966 that's only true in a toe fracture. Not if there is a lisfranc injury, which can be hard to diagnose if you're not familiar with the injury and how to look for it. This is why I suggest seeing an orthopedic surgeon. Classic mechanism of injury for a lisfranc is a foot stuck in a stirrup, but more modern times it is foot getting stuck in a hole. Like Morgan's injury.

Dude, you really need a boot. My daughter has fractured her foot twice, & she says that they make a huge difference re: pain. You're still going to be in it, for sure, but keeping your foot, toes, & ankle stable goes a long way in remaining mobile. I also feel the need to mention that your gait is all jacked up now. If you keep walking w/o a boot like that, your back, neck, knees, &/hips could easily get injured next. Speedy recovery! 💪

Yea I used to go to Agriculture school, and one piece of equipment we were required to buy was reinforced steel toe boots. (Partially because we were also learning about forestry and using chain saws but its also useful if say a cow steps on your toe..)

You can't go back in time! Do EVERY SINGLE THING you need to do to protect your foot, cause it's yours for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! I've regretted not taking my injuries seriously, and will pay for it the rest of MY life. The last 5 years have SUCKED, because my constantly hurting foot has seriously impacted my life. There are no do-overs for something like this. Keep it (extremely) real! Also: my broken foot produced knee and back issues I STILL have. I regret every day not being smarter, when I had the chance 😞

I would go get an opinion from a foot doctor. Orthopedic, podiatrist etc. Doc in a box are good for basics, but foot problems can mess you up if it doesn't heal correctly. Being on your foot, while necessary, is going to work against you healing. Big toes bear a lot of weight when we walk and stand. I screwed up one of my second toes, though not quite the same way. Hope you recover as quickly as possible.

Broke your big toe metatarsal? Much worse than breaking a little toe. Use a cane. Get a boot. Make sure you heal properly or you will be hobbling for the rest of your life.

This video popped up, ironically, this morning. Today I'm going in to see a podiatrist for one definitely, and two possibly, broken toes. I had a nasty fall about three weeks ago, down a flight of stairs, due to sleep deprivation caused by the alarms on my insulin pump going off all night. Accidentally took the staircase to the basement instead of the hallway back to the bedroom, and Wile E. Coyote'd my way down fourteen steps. With bare feet. Aside from the other injuries that required an ER visit later that morning (large bruises, nasty abrasions, bruised ribs, mild concussion), it took a separate visit to the GP to get him to order some X-rays for my feet, which the ER folks ignored in favor of making certain my brain and spine were okay. The pain is... manageable with lots of Tylenol when I walk, but the type of fractures might require surgery, which is going to really throw a wrench into getting my garden harvested and put to bed before winter. Diabetic feet are especially tricky, so breaks are a real problem. I hope your toe and foot heal quickly, as the pain is no joke, and the lack of good treatment options for toes is a serious problem for people whose work requires them to be active.

Oh Morgan, I feel for you! This last Thursday, I tripped over a curb. My foot really hurt, and Urgent Care x-rayed my foot. I fractured a bone in my foot. I am hobbling around, too. Yes, I have the boot. You should use the boot because it helps keep your ankle supported. That can be super important depending on the break. Also, it prevents you from twisting your foot into painful positions. Also, the footprint of the sole of the boot is pretty big. I think it will prevent you from falling into another woodchuck burrow. There is one bright side for me: I got a seat on very crowded public transportation today for my 40 minute commute. Honestly, I would rather stand without an injury, but kind people gave me seats. Hey, we can be (metaphorical) brother and sister in the boot (and pain). 🤕

Please be careful and let that rest and recover. I had a sesamoid bone injury in 2019 - ended up having to have surgery to remove the bone because of pain. Pain is slightly better now, but I have a permanent limp and still a lot of pain.

You have done so much to help your neighbors and community, please enlist some help to make sure your winter animal accommodations get finished in time. Especially the cattle, you need to be able to manage them better when they start calving. Funny story for you. About two and a half decades ago, we were living in NH, and I had one of my earliest gardens in the back yard. One morning I was sipping my coffee, admiring it from the kitchen window, when I saw a groundhog waddle over to it and start biting off my greens right at the ground! I grabbed my broom, slipped on the closest shoes to me, which happened to be a pair of dress shoes, and went tearing out the back door with bed head, in my nightgown and robe and my dressy black shoes, swinging my broom and hollering at that da*n woodchuck. He ran off, and I was so mad after assessing the garden beds and realizing it wasn’t his first visit. All of my greens had been chomped off! Stood there swearing after him until I realized my neighbors might be wondering if I’d gone off my rocker or was day drinking. Then, to add injury to insult, I got stung on my way back inside! I can laugh at it now, half a lifetime later, but man was I mad that day! I know it’s been a week or two since this happened to you, I hope you’re healing well and don’t have any more pain. ❤

I twisted my knee and still have trouble - durned ground hogs! I learned to check by taking walking stick when walking around. It’s pain in rear but better than stepping in another hole. Take care. 🙏 to heal fast.

Morgan u should put proper support on that leg- see if you can get someone to help around the farm or higher a temporary helper for the time to recover- I'm sure it sucks and that you want to get the work done, but as everyone else says down here its a serious injury that can become a issue for lifetime if not treated carefully. Oh man so sorry to hear that! Recommend you get a heavy duty cane unless you already have a pair. Don't want to mess up your back hobbling. Meds on board and you are good to go. I heartily sympathize on the pain. I broke a bone in my foot several years ago and was in a cast/on crutches for 4 weeks, then in a boot for another 2 weeks. You might get a cane to help with stability while you're in the pasture and working out around the animals. Even Toby or Abby stepping on your foot right now will be excruciating. One of the cattle stepping on it might cause you to pass out. I love your wife-guy moment, when you saw Alison's picture on the brochure. You should be proud of her!

Best to get the walking cast thing tbh, as someone who broke their toe before it helps a lot! Also broke some bones inside my foot from a different incident and that made it impossible to walk I was using crutches to get around, ended up rebreaking the foot and I was out for most of the year because of it, my foot has never been the same since.

Dang. Sorry for the injury. Best wishes for speedy recovery. We have woodchuck holes in our fields too. I try to mark them with a 4' fiberglass snow pole when I find them and fill them in. My dogs are free range part time (monitored w GPS) and they have killed at least one woodchuck.

I can reply, but not comment, and don’t know why. So, I’ve lived with fields and livestock-steer and horses, where animal leg breaks are really risky. A common practice is to periodically walk the field with stakes and flags, grid-style, and to flag every woodchuck hole with an ~4’ tall stake with a flag, aluminum cans on string, pie plates on string or bright survey tape on it. That way YOU can avoid stepping them, and the animals tend to get scared by the nonsense on top into avoiding them by the flags. Later on, an option is to go through with the tractor and pack the holes in with rocks and topped with clay & soil. I’m so sorry you got hurt. I’ve broken toes before and had toe surgery-which has a similar recovery time. The boot will definitely keep pressure off your toe muscles while you walk. It might not seem necessary now, but it’s wise to get one for your recovery, even if you have to order the correct size. Consider hiring a farm helper for the next week or so, and rest. Best!!!

My family’s favourite broken bone remedy is jelly snakes. In Aus you can buy jelly snakes that are made with natural gelatine. Something that is suppose to be good for healing bones. I ate three jelly snakes a day when I broke my ankle. Then I kept doing my exercises once it healed. People are surprised to know it had been broken. All the best, farm work is so much harder with a broken foot.

Tape your two toes together. That's all they can do for a broken toe. And it helps a lot more with the pain it keeps them sturdy. I've done it quite a few times. It will hurt for a couple weeks. Be careful and keep your foot elevated too. Take care
