Oh my God why can’t people just make videos like this? Thank you…

Thank you, Steve! I have read many an article from the site! I will test my stator tomorrow...

This is brilliant, thanks for your videos!

It's the same test on any bike, not just a goldwing. Nice vid.

Most of the time the actual stator does not fail, its actually the wires inside that vibrate around and come lose from the actual stator. There is no way to fix it other then to replace the entire stator assembly.

Cheers for that. Stator check this morning

5.6.18. The stock GoldWing stator is a wye wound unit that is not center tapped to ground (earth). so the test to ground is a test of leakage of insulation of the wire, it is tested by using the ohms function on the V.O.M. With the engine not running! It should read infinity, ideally. The other test is a ac voltage test .... (not a dc voltage test) between the 3 stator leads. 1-2 ... 2-3 ...1-3. Phases. You should have around 70vac (on a fresh stator) @ 3000rpm between any combination of the 3 stator leads. Theoretically the test to ground (earth) or negative, should show 0 volts, on the test you performed. Your stator insulation is most likely degraded. ☹️

Came here to say this. A stator puts out AC voltage, not DC. Idk stuff they test was, but it's useless. The electrical current isn't DC until after the rectifier
@Rman11002 жыл бұрын
@@MetropulosAubrey guy might just need a rectifier right

Hi Just tried this way of testing. I got allmost identical results, pulled the engine, replaced the Stator. It got better, but still charged insufficiently, testet the new stator, simaler reults, allmost returned the stator. I tested my rectifier, and found a faulty diode on the negativside. When the rectifier is replaced, i intend to redo the test. I am sorry to say, but i think it is inaccurate. Sorry about the grama, I am from Denmark

Was it the rectifier?
@jacobrungerasmussen31374 жыл бұрын
@@danielcarl5075 yes, I replaced the rectifier, and it has been charging perfectly since then. I will urge anyone to check everything at least twice before going thruogh the hasel of replacing the stator

@@jacobrungerasmussen3137 oh man wow you just needed a rectifier! So do you have a procedure reference on how you tested rectifier? Thanks

@@Rman1100 there are a lot of videos on how to do it. I filmede how I did it, but it is not very useful, as a how to video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5ecinqLh9GZbNE

Please remind me- when the stator is shot and we do the poorboy alternator conversion, how do we seal off and best disconnect the stator?

Helo everyone, few months ago i let my bike with a mechanic who replace the stator because i had that problem 1 year back (battery only last 1 or 2 days before discharge completely). But the problem is happening again after those 2 months, but i mean to ask ¿why? I check my stator like you show us here. And my measures are 0.53v, 3.78v and 1.00v. so why the stator is failing after been replaced for a new one?. What have done wrong that mechanic?
@reneberthou48207 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve! Checked my stator the way you showed, readings 7,7 - 12,0 - 7,7. As far as I could tell, you told that it would be the same on each one. Is my stator dead?.

Great video, and extremely helpful. I will give my antique 83 wing a test tomorrow. I think I have an overcharging issue, as the battery fluid will "boil" and fluid levels will drop. Also, I can actually hear a "bubbling" when I get close to the battery after a 10 mile drive and the engine off. You think it is a bad regulator?
@danielcarl50754 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a bad regulator to me

I'm replacing my old stator on my gl1200 its shot but the wires were cut and soldered does it matter what wire goes to when I have cut the connector off the new one they are three yellow wires please let me know . Thank you

I checked my stator and have well over 6 volts on each of the three yellow wires, however on only one of the yellow wires, while accelerating, it drops off, but only on accell, at idle all three wires have proper voltage, is that the reg doing its thing? thanks
@jamessnow620810 жыл бұрын
checked the 3 yellow from stator good voltage 6 volts on each wire but still not charging charged good whin I first started it then stoped when I rode it

I'm having the same issue. Voltage off stator wires are good but when idle to higher throttle there is no change? Bike will run for about an hour then it will not have enough juice to start back up. Any suggestions?
@RSVbruno8 жыл бұрын
I've seen a few bad reg/recs do that. Go and check to make sure that's not your cause. Also make sure your connections aren't corroded.

My biggest question is.....Do you have to remove engine to replace stator? Is there any way of doing a swap out without removing engine?

any idea of why stator fails? Can it be rewired? Thanks.

Instead of poking holes in the wires, test them at the rectifier plug.

It's probably not the stator! Check your rectifier. One of the diodes is failing.
