Whenever I have looked at books on Goldwork I usually come away as confused as when I started, but you have managed in this video and the one on Goldwork threads to completely demystify what has always seemed so complicated to me. I already have your Goldwork starter set but had never felt confident to use it until now. Thank you!

It can seem complicated at first Rebecca so just concentrate on a few of the techniques (I suggest couching and pearl purl) and familiarise yourself with the materials. You can move on to something else when you are ready! We have a whole beginners goldwork 'thing' coming soon!

Once again, you remind me of the most important lesson I've received from your videos: the preparation and thinking through, which has to include anticipating a logistic problem and the necessary tool, is just as important as the actual materials and stitching skills. Most of the time we improvise -- like my Gran with her candle ends to wax her button thread -- but the precision you get with the exact tool designed for a task can't be beat. Now here come some special scissors that don't let the metal roll as you cut it; of course, how clear once you find out! Thanks for all your teaching work. Pretty, the red summer roses on the blouse. Your own work?

I always think learn the 'correct' way first then you have license to try some short cuts if you want to! I didn't stitch my blouse no, if only there were more hours in the day!

As much as I appreciate the videos & I am practicing but unfortunately I am not progressing very well. But then again occasionally I am not very patient but I think this metal thread is just not my cup of tea. I mean I can't even get the filling (or whatever it's called) done correctly! I think I will have to learn to lay down the work more often &/or drink more tea, patience - patience !

Goldwork is quite an unusual embroidery technique and does take a bit longer to learn the more technical side of it. Things that are worth doing take longer to learn so be kind to yourself Roberta! And drink more tea anyway.

Hello. Sometimes I see mentioning "Cloth of Gold" when reading about goldwork embroidery, but I've never seen anyone showing such fabric in their embroidery videos. Have you ever used this fabric or could you make a video about it?

Sarah, I dont know if you are familiar with this but I figured I would ask. I was watching some Russian gold work videos where they were couching broad plate and before the pushed the needle up from under the fabric they punctured the fabric, with what looked like a needle attached to a wooden handle at the place where they wanted the couching needle to come up from underneath. When they removed the punch the couching needle seemed to magically appear to come up from the same hole. Was that a hollow needle punch used to guide the couching needle?

@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thank you Sarah. The Russian woman subsequently told me they use an awl to puncture the fabric in order to position each couching stitch accurately kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYuYioVjqLqIrpY

Hi Sarah I love you videos and am especially keen to do goldwork. You explain things very clearly and all your work is beautiful. My aim is to truly master goldwork but I understand you have to build up step by step. What shades are the sew all threads you show, Gutermann do so many and I want to purchase the correct shades? Also is it possible to do goldwork onto velvet? Will you be doing any goldwork letters, I'd love to know how to go about monograming in goldwork? Please your videos coming they are so inspirational, thank you very much. Xx

These are the shades we sell in our shop for goldwork Fiona: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/cat_1121056-Other-threads-and-materials.html Yes you can do goldwork onto velvet! You will need to use the prick and pounce method to transfer your design and once the gold goes on you can't unpick it so I suggest if you are new to goldwork you work your way up to working on velvet.

Sara I don't understand the cost to America. Love your veido
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 4 жыл бұрын
The best way to find out the price for you is to add your items to the basket and proceed through checkout. After selecting the shipping service (International Tracked & Signed only to the USA in the current circumstances) the cost will be calculated and you will see it before you commit to purchasing.

Sarah, I want to practice couching over card. What kind of card stock is usually used and how thick should it be. Thank you.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 4 жыл бұрын
You can use anything you like really 588158, I would suggest cardstock that is acid free if you can. The thickness depends on how high you want your couching to be. I suggest trying some samples out first to see what looks best

@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery when I was reading to find out more on that technique, some say historically it was over vellum or parchment (hence leather),, but more modern usage has been pelmet-weight vilene. It seemed to work. Is this a method you would recommend? (P.S. I am in awee of your videos - thank you!)
