Feel feel feel, on my old old favorite Tommy Armour Zaap putter, I seem to have very good feel and touch on a harder two piece ball off that putter face. I have tried and no longer want to putt with a softer ball, it's just a feel thing and distance, I want a 35 foot putt to go around that distance not six feet short, don't want to relearn my feel with ten foot putts, so I'm sticking with the harder cover ball for now, the heck with the spiny balls at this time in my golf life. But very good video post Mark, thanks.

Opened my eyes with this one regarding driver spin being the same across most balls. I always thought a pro V1 or V1X because they are higher spinning balls around the greens, that would equate to higher spinning driver shots and therefore less distance than say a TP5X or other "low spin balls".

Went to a titleist ball fitting day 2 years ago. Was told they expect a 3-4 yard difference off the tee through range. They said that they'd fit everyone into a pro v1 or x and only made the other balls so there was something at each price point because that's what people wanted. Was a range of handicaps there and all golfers preferred the premium ball but felt they had a hard sale with the higher handicappers (who all had full sets of brand new titleist clubs bags and electric trolleys so didn't seem like money was the issue). Also found out I was a high spin player with driver sitting around 3500, and 7 iron around 8-8500 but difference between v1 and v1 x was about 300 at most. Same cover on both v1 and v1 x just different mantles. Found it really interesting only thing I didn't like was the way they pooped on the Chromesoft. Really trying to say it was like an nxt and completely inferior. I told them I didn't agree as I can spin a Chromesoft back but not a nxt. Think they were genuinely worried about the price point of it sitting that much lower than their premium offering.

The results make a lot of sense. I think what confuses people, especially high handicappers, in this area of the game is that their on-course experience tells them that a slice with the driver flies higher and shorter than a hook. Since most amateur players struggle with the slice rather than the hook they believe the marketing telling them that a low-spin distance ball is for them. They don't realize that the excess height and loss of distance is caused by strike/path/club-face issues. I also think most people don't realize that the difference in distance between a draw and a cut, when executed properly by a Pro is negligible (assuming wind and bounce provide a clear benefit for the one or the other shot shape).

Obvious you might say but just thought I’d see if they did what they say on the tin & they did 👍🏻 that said I still play whatever I can get for about £20 a dozen because nearly £50 a dozen is too much for me & makes hitting one in a pond hurt even more 😫😫😫😂😂😂

A buddy and I were out last night practicing on the course. We were hitting different balls for the fun of it. Both of us game ProV's. He's a former college player and mini tour player with regained amateur status. I threw him a brand new, lime green, Callaway Supersoft and told him to give that a go from 145 in the fairway to a pin in the middle of the green. Sure enough, his wedge launched high and long 20 yards over the green. Flyer from the middle of the fairway with a cheap no spin ball while the ProV's were around the hole. Can low spin balls go further with a driver than premium balls? Maybe. With irons? Definitely, while sacrificing control. Play the best ball you can afford.

On my full wedge shots with my 58 or 54…I typically rip the ball of the green….it sucks. I will throw a dart with a divot right beside the pin and it will zip back completely off the green. Current ball is 2022 Pro V1 X. Any advice? Should I try a lower spin ball? I did mess around with the callaway Supersoft and it launched very high and landed and just stopped pretty much. I just had random fliers so I didn’t use it. Any recommendations on a ball change to land and stay instead of the zip back that is actually hurting my score?

So what ball should average Joe be using???? A pro V1 because it gives more spin so "scoring" shots are "easier" to control??? Ive always been under the impression that v1's and v1x's are too hard for the average swing speed to get the best out of
@MrMalditor6 жыл бұрын
No, swing speed really doesn't matter much when it comes to what ball to use. If you can afford the prov1/x then it's a great ball to play.

@clemfisher57276 жыл бұрын
From previous videos from different people, I knew the answers. The tour players would not want to give up distance off the tee - they want the shortest iron for their approach shot. On a different point though, I would be happy to play with premium balls like Pro V1 or TP5 if they were being provided foc as with Mark or Coach. However, if I was paying £4 a ball and then had a bad round losing 4/5 balls, I would be pretty hacked off. Hence I play with lake balls (although I try to use the same make and type)

@craighunter10146 жыл бұрын
Great video. Is the only reason manufacturers are producing these balls down to the fact there is a market to sell them to? Seems like there is no scenario other than maybe a 200 yard out shot you’d want to use this low spin, distance ball. Still, there are enough variables in golf without throwing in this 7 iron might for 140 or 160 yards for example
@jordany65486 жыл бұрын
Wondering at what point you would argue the ball matters? As someone who's regularly scoring around 100, i feel like my strike inconsistency is overpowering whatever the ball claims to do spin wise. Strictly price and feel based purchasing decisions for me (or whatever i happen to find while walking hands in pockets in the woods)

The results were as I expected. I would prefer to see a comparison of the spin between the two balls struck by a robot to minimize variability caused by a human swing. My question is whether the difference in spin between the two balls from driver to wedge is linear or exponential. A 10% decrease in spin from the ProV1x versus the low spin distance ball in a driver might be only a couple of hundred RPMs (2500 v. 2250) which would have less impact on a drive than a wedge shot (9000 v. 8100 rpms). If the difference in RPMs on wedge shots are exponential, then even greater impact on the shot. For me personally, I prefer the feel of a higher spin multi-piece ball than a lower spin distance ball because of the ability to control my mid to short irons more on my approach shots and around the greens than any loss of distance on my drives.
@icecmu6 жыл бұрын
So is it best to get a higher spinning ball for most players? I shoot 75-85 and I cant decide on what ball to use.
@martyndaly15396 жыл бұрын
It's possibly harder to get the message when brands market it as 'distance' balls instead of 'cheaper lower spin balls'. I'm not so naive that I can't see why they do it but videos like this show the reality. Like I think you've tried to say many times, work from the green backwards and get as close to premium as you can afford
@jonathanthomason78966 жыл бұрын
Wedge.... if struck similar.... spin less but carry similar. Not much room for distance variances when it comes to shorter shots. It's all feel at this point.
@RobMcGarr6 жыл бұрын
Maybe I'm being dumb but I don't get why the extra spin *wouldn't* mean more fade/draw?
@florianredecsy49976 жыл бұрын
Scratch Golf no you are not dumb. The reason is that when they talk about spin it is only backspin. Draw or Fade is caused by side spin. Eg.: 500rpm sidespin. If you had eg a 100000rpm backspin you wouldn’t even notice the sidespin. But if you had 500rpm backspin you would massively notice it. Basically vector mathematics.
@RobMcGarr6 жыл бұрын
Florian Redecsy But backspin and sidespin aren't happening in isolation, right? The ball is just spinning on a tilted axis? So the more that axis is tilted sideways, and the higher the spin rate, the more the shot will curve? 🤯
@davethehead007averagegamer66 жыл бұрын
Scratch Golf I think they are independent from each other. In the fact that a straight shot only has backspin. Then you add angle to the back spin which makes flight curve. But the point is it's not the high spinning ball that adds side spin. It's the face and path. If you can stop your shots fairly quickly your distance control will be better. Hope this helps.
@jasonprice98236 жыл бұрын
Florian Redecsy thanks for this. I’ve always been curious.
@jacklynsmith19436 жыл бұрын
Scratch Golf draw and fade is determined by the amount of tilt of the spin axis not the rpm. D-plane determines spin axis. Speed, angle of attack, and dynamic loft effect backspin. He has plenty of videos about it check them out

Dont hate on it, but I waited until the end to just post the one comment! I thought with the driver that it would probably have both a longer carry, and be more likely to maybe roll out a little more than the ProV1x. Similarly, I figured that hitting the wedge would maybe carry a little more, maybe a hop or two, then roll out over the back of the green. Thats just my reckonin' of course.

Enjoy all the spin vids, but can we get a ball compression video that explains where/when diminishing returns creep in, if at all for slower swing speed players using a high compression ball like a proV? Edit: Just watched another video of yours and you basically said picking a golf ball based on swing speed makes no sense, so maybe that answers my question, just had always heard that certain balls are easier to "compress" then others, maybe that's not based in facts, would be interesting vid for folks none the less.

Jonathan Cassidy they’re at a lower price point. They’re looking to sell to all areas of the market? Not everyone wants to pay £4 a ball when they’re losing 3-4 a round. I play a pro v1 because I like its stability in performance, spin on 100 yards and in and the feel
@trondgjertsen87656 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing two of the reasons are: Costs less to produce and therefore they can sell to those that can't afford ProV's (for instance those that loose too many balls to buy ProV's). And there are also quite a few people who believe the marketing about these balls going further, which makes them actually want them instead of the ProV's. Because they either struggle with distance, or they are like so many I meet on the course, they only want to talk distance with their clubs and therefore think two pieces will help them hitting it even further.
@joeperez35206 жыл бұрын
I'd have guessed both balls off the driver would be the same, since I've seen a lot of vlogs in the last year (mostly ball manufacturers) making the point that off the DRIVER, almost EVERY ball performs the same (I guess provided you center-strike it, with proper face-to-path). Fear of Left & Right Spin was why I stopped using the higher spinningballs, since I figured a REALLY bad shot with a driver would kill the hole for me to begin with.
@rizalabdulkadir71856 жыл бұрын
Think balls are bought by cost before skill hence spin is secondary. Here in Malaysia many people buy 2nd hamd pro V vs new cheaper balls.

So why then does Titleist bother with so many different balls if the Pro V1X is the best ball s you lose performance with the distance ball?
@DanB-6 жыл бұрын
cost obviously, every ball they sell is cheaper than pro v1, the whole point of pro v1's and all premium balls is you get max distance and max spin available from a golf ball. Lesser models sacrifice some elements in order to make it cheaper.
@garytailby33516 жыл бұрын
So the vlog was in fact an effort to sell more pro Vs which clearly make more margin.

Not really, if you didnt know the pro v was titleist's "best" "premium" "tour" golf ball then I dont know where you have been. The people that play say the trusoft, or the PTS type titleist will not now go buy pro v's, they want to play pro v in the first place they just either cant afford them or can justify the price.

Pro v1 and Pro v1x May well be the best balls on the market but they don’t provide value for money for people who lose a lot of golf balls. Just out of interest what ball does Ray use?
@gregflynn11076 жыл бұрын
That is a bloody good point. I lose 3-4 balls a round, and play municipal courses. The premium ball price would double the price of the round. Ray loses a few balls, he might have an opinion on the cost to performance benefit. Added to that Mark doesn't pay for balls.
@Stephenpettitt1986 жыл бұрын
Greg Flynn plus Mark tends to hit the ball pretty straight off the tee so even if he was paying for balls it would be cheaper for him than someone playing off a handicap. I think the point he might be trying to make with this video is that there are now premium balls marketing themselves as lower spin (tp5 by Taylor made and AVX from titleist) and lower spin doesn’t benefit the vast majority of golfers, however it’s not clear that’s what he is trying to say because he tested it against one of the cheaper titleist balls rather than the avx. Most people I know buy balls based on price so they don’t use premium balls. Unless they find one of course
