Do you have a problem losing your lag? Are you flipping your club and not getting a good compressed golf shot? When you flip your club you can lose all the energy being built up for the golf ball. You may be casting and using your right arm way too much. In this Golf Flip vs Golf Release | The Difference is Huge! video we cover in detail some points that will allow you to shred those bad flipping habits. Start getting compressed golf shots that end with lots of distance and speed.
I look forward to working with you much more in the future with Top Speed Golf. Good luck with your golf.

I've watched a lot of online golf instruction. A lot. The explanation and teaching on this one is extraordinarily insightful. Super thoughtful, on a vital part of a controlled swing. No one has quite managed to explain this to me like you have. Whitaker came close, but this is the best.

Great video Clay. I think a lot of people think about swinging at the Ball and releasing the club. What should happen is think about the swing as a whole and the ball is just in the way and the release will happen automatically, due to the way out body and swing is built. I mostly think about my swing path and making sure I swing to my foot target and finishing to my distance target. The ball is just in my way and not think to much in my swing just let it happen. I have drop my handicap 10 strokes just by thinking in this way. But Clay, you are a great teacher love the videos

I understand a flip BEFORE impact is no bueno. But what a flip that occurs just after impact. It seems on would be adding additional velocity from the wrists.

The flip happens using the right arm but that is not the cause of the flip. A golfer flips when they transfer their weight to the front foot on the downswing, but have not cleared the target side hip. Because they have moved a good 4 inches closer to the ball, the only way they can now hit it is to jump vertically with their feet and flip with their hands. I know, I did it for long enough. Clear the hip to stop the flip!

The thing that really allowed me to understand the difference between the early flip in the straight-line release was realizing that physics works on its own much more in the straight-line release because of centrifugal force. Just like nunchuck sticks, when you flip one the other one wants to flip around much, much faster, naturally. When you flip early you have to create the force to do it with your wrists. When your timing is such that you get the straight line release, the club wants to release and you'd have to resist it to keep it from doing that. The weight of the club and the centrifugal force created in the early part of the swing force the club to want to come through without much help from the wrists. Obviously the wrists come into play but when I finally understood this idea of how centrifugal force works with nunchucks, it made it a lot easier for me to execute it in my golf game. That's also the reason why one doesn't have to swing hard to get great club head speed... for the same reason one does not need to swing nunchucks fast to get incredible speed off of the second piece of wood.

This all makes sense in terms WHY the ball travels farther in the 'straight line release' verses the flippy release. The problem for me is when I try to get (more)shaft lean and release after impact I can't get the club head square and most of my shots go dead right. Frustrating.

Hey Clay, I tried your proper release swing and being 69, I have put my back out and I believe this is because as the right shoulder goes down and through on the downswing and swinging to the left, it compresses the lower right side of the back and that’s what I have done and it is in constant spasm. My doctor told me the back is not designed to swing the golf club on that tilted plane on the rotary downswing finishing to the left. Maybe for a younger guy but even the top four players such as Tiger, Rory, Rosie and Day etc have all had bad backs. Your thoughts......?

Clay is awesome and he knows a lot more than I but I just wanted to comment; back when I was getting good (3 or 4 handicap when I was playing/practicing a lot) at golf I worked on the late release/big lag a lot with my short irons irons and one of the things I learned playing at the range was to pull the butt of the shaft as far past the ball as possible for a very late release, just playing around I discovered my lob wedge instead of going 40 yds it would go 80 and my pitch would go 130 vs 105...I soon was hitting my 7 iron 175 and though it got harder to implement the same swing as the clubs got longer and I probably stopped playing/practicing not long after that so never fully got where I thought I might get but just wanted to pass it along, the further past the ball the butt of your club gets before you release it the greater fulcrum effect you will get which means more energy/speed you will create with the club head...just my 2 cents.

Lag has driven me nuts for years. I've read more about it than any other part of the swing and still can't get it. I'm self taught and most of these other concepts I mastered in a heart beat. HItting a draw and fade? Learned it in one practice session by myself. The technique for a sand shot also took very little work. But lag I just can't get. I start my downswing by turning my hips to the left and after that I cant tell you consciously what my hands are doing. But I've seen my swing in slow mo and I'm scooping. If I try to feel like I am really intentionally trying to hold the lag I end up either coming down on it too steepily and really smothering alot of low shots or I just flat out shank it because I havent released the club and the only thing left to hit the ball with is the hosel.
@FrostyBrew
@FrostyBrew 7 жыл бұрын
Stop worrying about lag. Lag is the result many points of the swing and you can't really swing a golf club with ANY speed without generating lag. If you don't believe me, try slow swinging without your wrists hinging at all. Basically, your arm and shaft make a straight line all the way through. It doesn't work.
@movieguy992
@movieguy992 7 жыл бұрын
If lag is just a point in the swing then what creates that point in the swing where your hands are right above the ball but the club is only parallel to the ground on the downswing. You see that in every pros swing. I've seen my swing in slow motion and by the time I get my hands down to about my right hip the club angle is gone. I rarely take divots with anything other than my wedges. I've tried to really force a delayed hit and downward hit but that just seems to lead to a knockdown punch shot.

@TopSpeedGolf

Hi movie guy99, Kronis1 is correct that its hard to give the exact answer to why you cannot get lag without a video of your swing. From what you told me it could be your spine angle, poor rotation, early extension to name a few to cause lack of lag and scoop motion. I have a drill to help you get lag and to physically what is going on during the swing. topspeedgolf.com/topic/easy-golf-lag-drill-stick-behind-the-ball/. I've been able to reduce my flip a lot this past year. Here are some of my tips: 00. SWING HACK!!! Practice Lee Trevino super-open-stance swings! Hitting pushes really helps you to learn the feeling of a non-flip release, because it is hard to flip through a push! 1. practice swings with RIDICULOUSLY soft hands 2. try to get your right elbow lower to the ground at impact (you will need to change the pivot, spine angle, etc. to make this work.) Feel like your right forearm is an extension of the shaft from the DTL viewpoint around impact. 3. Transfer weight into correct part of left foot in the downswing. I believe this is the ARCH of the left foot. And try not to get too much on the outside of the left foot before impact. (I am assuming you are a right-handed player). Many amateurs transfer into the left balls/toes, which is incorrect. 4. Keep soft and loose CORE and back. You will need this to increase separation between hips and shoulders, and to find new spine and hip positions. These three things really worked for me. I am getting totally different (better) contact. I also swing less hard now. It is important to tone down the power when you are making swing changes. It also helps you to stay looser. Once you discover the swing, you can work on ingraining it and then adding juice to it.

so in order to do this right all i have to think about in my swing is relax a couple fingers in my right hand , my right fore arm is relaxed, im supposed to shallow out the club to get lag then glide into the ball, get my left leg to push into the ground , then rotate my hip and shoulder , then bring my hand up and let it release. when is my left leg suppose to post. oh yea its supposed to feel long. oh yea I need to get the butt end turning up, move the clubhead level.... wait ???? what is supposed to be relaxed? when do I post? SERIOUSLY??? if you talk that fast and try to teach the average golfer all those thoughts their head will explode. It all makes sense to an instructor but how many times have we heard a student say"I'm thinking about too many things"

I was under the impression the flip came from an overly inside-out swing where the clubhead has no choice but to flip at impact. that's what I'm afflicted with anyways.
@donemigholzjr.7344
@donemigholzjr.7344 7 жыл бұрын
Close but he is still coaching casting. Keep the cub face open the whole way to the ball to allow the club to release at the bottom of the swing creating a vortex right at the ball. With a strait swing path the ball has no choice but on to your target. With a strait swing path that puts the ball on the same path you are allowed to concentrate on visualizing what it will take for the ball to get to and in the cup. At 160 yards golfers should be aiming at the hole not the green.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, thanks for the comment. This drill is actually to stop casting. Keep in mind that the ball is always going to start roughly in the direction of the club face. If the club face isn't square with a square club path then that ball will not go straight assuming center contact. The ball is going to start in the direction of the club face and curve away from the club path. I hope that helps. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
@donemigholzjr.7344
@donemigholzjr.7344 7 жыл бұрын
Closing the club face is casting. The club face should be released at the ball, at the bottom of a swing that is in line with the target. It is not the club face that dictates the balls flight it is the swing path of the club that snaps almost like a whip at the ball that predicates the balls flight. Think about it. How do you get the club face square to the ball? With your hands…. That is casting. The grip, the stance, and drastically starting your swing with opening your hips are all to keep from using your hands. The Golfer should be fighting, struggling, doing everything in his/her power to keep the club face open and the swing path on target. Everything else is automatic because this causes a vortex, a snap, a release of the club head at the very bottom of the swing at the ball. For you, the good news is coaching golf becomes much easier and much more rewarding for your students.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, I think we have different definitions of what casting is. I define as the release of the club head energy too early in the golf swing. You want to generate lag in the start of the downswing and then release it past impact. This way you can get forward shaft lean and compress the ball. If you release the club at the ball then you won't get forward shaft lean. When casting occurs, no lag is being generated in the downswing. Instead, the club is being released from the very top of the swing and the energy of the clubhead is being lost before it gets to the impact. This is usually where we see flipping and scooping of the ball. This can cause a major power leak as indicated in this video. Many people do this because it feels like a powerful move pushing out with your dominant hand. This is why it is so common. You're not necessarily going to be opening or closing the club face when you're casting. I've seen people do both. The flip move at impact is usually to square the face. I agree, this move is usually brought on by not opening the hips into impact. Most people don't open up into impact which causes a flip as the hands pass in front of the body. As a side note, I would recommend you checkout Trackman University: trackmanuniversity.com. They have a lot of great information on ball flight laws and many other things. It's completely free as well. The ball is going to start in mostly the direction of the club face and then curve away from the club path direction. The club path has a very small part in the starting direction of the ball. For example, if your club path is dead straight, 0 degrees, and your face angle is 10 degrees to the right then the ball is going to start about 10 degrees to the right and curve more to the right (away from the club path). So, even though the club path was straight, that ball is going to start to the right and keep going even more to the right. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 6 жыл бұрын
HI Lucas, part of the reason he was able to get more club head speed was because he released the club properly. If you release too early like when you flip, then you'll burn up your speed early. The increase in smash also came from having less loft on the face. When you flip, there is less loft on the face so less compression and decreased smash. It's also possible that he didn't catch it the same way. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
