Bring in a 10 -15 handicap and have them do some holes on the simulator and have him coach, would love to see someone who’s decision making isn’t as strong and maybe needs a swing tweak to help correct them

awesome video, and helpful for me, I'm going through this too where my swing is decent and course play/confidence are where I'm successful or not. Ended my season with 82, 83 where beginning of the season I was struggling to break 90 again after having done it last year. I'm no longer getting 5-10 penalties a round contributing to a 92, so now I think my path under 80 is short game practice/improvements and "coaching" style advice. Golf sidekick is popular for a reason, you can vastly improve with any level of swing quality by having a good mental game, playing to your strengths, and making smarter choices. Would love to see more videos like this. Matt you rock, would love to play golf with you! Cheers from Ottawa

The part at around 7 minutes… pick a target, rehearse a feel and execute… Used it today, for anything that wasn’t a routine stock shot. Worked a treat; not only distracting me from the peril (like OB) but executing better with feelings rather than technical thoughts. Very interesting guys!

The key to golf is playing. Alot. And learning. Then applying what you've learned. I believe golf is a solo journey of enlightenment.

I've been watching you guys for a while and this may just be my favorite video you've produced. The idea of tweaking things that may not need to be tweaked and putting you in a better headspace to execute. This is something I struggle with a lot and found this extremely helpful.

Seriously though, this was a great video on how an instructor can translate to a coach or how someone might need 2 different people possibly. Thanks for this 👏🏻

From the sounds of it seems that it would be recommended that a beginner would benefit most from an Instructor as they need to understand the fundamentals and haven't developed the feels in a golf swing yet. For an experienced/better player it would be recommended to find a coach that can give you different prompts and doesn't look to drastically change your mechanics but rather help you refine your movement and process. Another really interesting video though, this series with Gareth is quality.

Great vid. In a similar thinking aspect, I recently came across left brain (logic, swing thoughts focus) Vs right brain ( feel, visualisation, let the athlete play). 30 hcp have just started to change my thinking to right brain changing pre hit thought process feel visualisation etc (not tecnical That's for driving range). Last round 5 pars and a birdie best round yet by long shot. Equally I am finding more connected to body and feel and have better internal feedback. With left brain thinking, now reflecting back, was getting stuck mid swing on swing thoughts "jumping out" and breaking swing timing. Definitely discovering I am more of a feel player which is interesting given I'm a tech, very logic driven person ( engineer). Let the athlete out to play. Internally chose the type of player you is a similar Q to coach vs instructor just flipped internal.

I've been working on technique for a while, and will continue to - I want a 'pretty' swing, an Adam Scott swing :) and while I have a long way to go, my technique is reasonably sound and repeatable. But like Matty Boy, I don't think I'm performing/scoring as well as I can physically and technically so I now think the next step in improving my results will come from performance coaching. The distinction between instructing and coaching - technique vs performance is a clearer now and I have an idea of what I need/am looking for. Thanks for sharing Gareth.

Such a good video. You guys are masters at the fitting component, and even to a degree, the instruction. So much so that you make difficult to understand topics simple enough to have solid takeaways. Gareth is an awesome guest for your channel because he does such a nice job of explaining things and giving actionable items. This video alone I think will allow me to shave a solid stroke or two.

Great content, really fascinating thanks. Also why I like Zen golf's approach to their lessons and have really improved a ton from visualising the shots I want to play and using my body to aid that rather than striving for traditional positions.

This is very similar to what Shawn Clement teaches. He’s the most extreme “anti-body position” guy out there. George Gankas and others also speak about getting “external.”

I suggest you look into decade before looking for a coach. It will even help you with the questions and understanding what a coach will tell you in case you decide to contact one.

It's a really profound observation that often the student doesn't know how to describe what they're struggling with in a way that will make sense to a coach (or instructor). I know this affects me and I know I'm doing a bad job at describing the issues to my coach/instructor, and it's so profoundly frustrating to know what you're struggling with but not having the language to describe it in a way that to help my coach help me in the way I need. It's resulted in some horrible and unnecessary swing changes, and my performance on the course is worse for it.

I am struggling big time and I think this is definitely something I need to look into. At the range, I hit everything pretty decently, but when I get to the course, it goes down the tubes pretty quickly. I have a portable simulator that I use at the range and pretty much just use that to play on courses that I typically play on in my area. I’m not just hitting driver after driver or 8 iron after iron. I simulate actually playing as much as the simulator will allow me to. I have been giving a lot of thought to why this is the case. One theory I’ve come up with is that at the range I have a square mat, I’m using alignment sticks to get me pointed at the target, to get my ball position right; I have all these markers to get me in the position I want to be in to execute a shot. At the course, I have none of these. No sticks, no lines, no aides of any kind to help line me up (i do pick a spot about 2 feet in front of me before every shot as my target). I think when I’m the course without any of this, everything gets out of whack. Ball position, stance, you name it, and subconsciously I realize this and make all sorts of movements to compensate and try to make decent contact. Today on a number of swings, I caught my back elbow flying out creating this crazy over the top swing and causing me to pull the ball way right (I’m a lefty). At the range on my simulator, I NEVER do this. I’m thinking of throwing down some sticks during my next round and see what happens. I know I don’t want to always do this, but I want to get a feel for how I should be lined up, etc and the sticks will help me do this. I don’t know. Is this something a coach would help with? Or is it more for an instructor?

Definitely would prefer a coach at this point. Interesting video. Swing isn't perfect to what I want but on course I'm definitely thinking about some visual swing thought instead of result. What's a good way to practice that if I can't be on course to do it? Would assume targets on the range but would like his thoughts too. Great video.

I have definitely moved towards on course coaching rather than quick fix instruction. Obviously, the instruction to assist with swing issues is useful, but the approach to playing better golf is more important than an Instagram-able swing.
