Golf Mk4 AGU 1.8T GTI Engine Clean & Part Build

Finished rebuilding my Mk4 GTI just yesterday. I also had a low engine oil pressure. The pick up pipe was guilty. Previous owner used too much silicone on the oil pan and all that clogged the pickup pipe. Lifters we rattling like hell. But I didn't buy a new one I just cleaned it out. Nice one.

Try and install an oil catch can, it helps separate the water from the oil going back into the engine.

Hey, when you put that overside Tip, you don't have problems with an water pipe?

Thanks for the reply, I never got around to getting a 3” maf as baby was in the way and had to get the car working again. More videos to come soon as I’ve just destroyed my engine in my mk5 gti. 🤦🏻‍♂️

di you put the engine in with the transmission already mounted to the engine?

I am gearing up to do this down the road but was wondering if I should pull the egnine and transmission together and then install it with the transmission mounted to the engine

Yes mate I did but I’d seriously recommend having someone to help guid it in as I knocked the end of the box with the black cover on and dented very slightly and once installed I could here a rotational tapping noise! However once installed I took the black cover off and tapped the dent out and it was all good 👍🏼 Good luck 🤞🏼

@@gotwebsite1 no on the gearbox mate it’s an inspection cover I think for the synchro it’s a black cover with a VW stamp embossed. I knocked it in the chassis as I was manoeuvring the engine and box in with the hoist 😂

Isai Lopez Villegas The TIP fits really well into the K03-011. I had to slightly bend the metal coolant pipe, that about it really 👌🏼

Im not a mechanic im on a agu 1.8 turbo golf my engine isn't out iv replaced the cam belt aux belt waterpump n so on im putting a k04 and scorpion down pipe 3" as we speak just need to buy 3 inch intercooler piping and front mount then get it tuned in with the correct injectors mine is an empty shell tho with 1 seat out of my bora for now lol i want it to be under 1000kg

Lee Ford it's all a labour of love 😍 I've already got some Saab Red injectors at the ready. I'm thinking about getting a k04-001 special from eBay and fmic to boot with that turbo I won't have to change My 3" downpipe. The TIP is ready for it also being oversized. If you change Your mind about the seating arrangement I've got a set of GTI mk4 Recaro's in the attic great condition other then the drivers bolster has gone abit.. I'd be interested in seeing Your progress if got pictures or videos online 😉

Cogwinder Gaming i think iv got some on my twitter account i put the recaro seats out of my golf in the bora tdi i have cos i got it mapped and i kept falling out the seat in standard office chairs they had in the bora and i bought the golf for £80 cos a lad had tried to get it thru its mot n it failed on emissions oxygen sensor wiper motor and all 4 tyres the lad abandoned it for a year n 9 months and jud the mechanic said he'll phone the guy up so i got it for £80 recaro seats with the bolster gone on the drivers side the gti alloys where mint since then i thought i see so much potential in these cars

Lee Ford You definitely got a steal deal there Bro, from My experience with these engines and the same goes for Golf's in general.. As long as You service them earlier then recommended and replace parts before they fail completely they will keep on going for longer then expected. My original AGU failed down to the oil pickup being slightly clogged up and it seized at 130mph, I do intend to bring it back to life in the future and forge the internals and go for monster power with 4 wheel drive 😉

Cogwinder Gaming id love to see an agu 4 wheel drive would u use a quatro system off the s3 8l im not sur ud be able to off the r32 well u seem more clued up than me but thats got the vr6 in it and a different gearbox all together was it just audi who put the 1.8 turbo in 4 wheel drive??

Cogwinder Gaming if your on twitter my account is the same lee ford @fordsdetailing4 iv got pictured up there how far iv got im going with a heat wrapped high flow manifold s3 oil and coolant lines n vxr 2.0 injectors so the turbo runs ok b4 it gets mapped on a rolling road iv got some thin strong perspex cut out ready cos im taking all the glass out air bags thats all thats left really

another non mechanic here... good vid bro. im actually doing the research to pull a project just like this off to replace the 2.0 in a bug i laid hands on that has a wicked knock. plan to drop in the 1.8t and DQB trans (yes im looking at AWD, might not be able to pull it off but im gonna try)

@@CogwinderGaming you got it. my main issue is the rear floor pan situtation. i want to see if i can avoid having to cut the rear pan out by switching to a fuel cell. instead of having to rip the pan and then put in the one that will accept the AWD gas tank (fingers crossed, im gonna be getting a donor so if it doesnt work im off to the cutting wheel with it) all that ranted ill deffo keep you posted, ill eventually be doing videos on it if all goes well

Sounds its miss firing at the end ? Are your coils ok ? New plugs ? How much did you pay for that turbo ?

It was a bit boggy on the 1st start as it had fuel that was over a year old XD. AGU coils pretty much never fail, I did replace the plugs with Bosch super 4 brand but will be getting some NGK-R soon. The Ebay Turbo was on offer for £119 they normally sell for £200, I've covered 700 miles so far & all is well Boosting @ 0.8 bar with a MBC.

Thanks for your reply. Yeh get the NGK ones, Iridium ones tho heat range 6\7 but depends if you shall get your car mapped. Is the turbo good, hold boost strong ? Wanted to know how ebay turbos do on vag 1.8t, Where you based ?

W Racer I'm in Worcestershire. It holds boost very hard, but I'll update you more when I turn the MBC up to about 1Bar. I think it's a stock map? But who knows? It's faster then other AGU 1.8T that I've drove 🚗💭

I had a miss fire in my agu engine and it was a fried ignition module, the last owner put a pod filter on and normally the module stays cool through the air box but the box was gone so it over heat and shit itself

Nice job. Won't it run lean with a MBC? I'd get a AF meter just incase. Also did you find the wiring difficult? Mine looks like spaghetti lol
