Really helpful video. Great tip about dropping onto the green out of a sprinkler head!

You can't drop on the green when taking relief from the sprinkler head.

Hi there Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment, however I beg to differ. Please see the following extract from Golf Digest: You don’t have to take a drop in the same condition. This isn’t always the case, but say your ball winds up so close to a sprinkler head or other abnormal course condition that you are entitled to free relief (because the condition interferes with your stance or swing). And say you’re ball is on the fringe or even the rough next to a green. So long as you’re within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole, you can now play from a different condition than your ball currently lies-possibly even on the green! You also could go from the rough to the fairway if you follow these same guidelines. It doesn’t always work in your favour, but don’t assume if your ball is in the rough, you have to drop in the rough. Kind regards, Paul

@Golf Show Hey Paul, I wouldn't recommend looking at Golf Digest for your Rules of Golf knowledge. Your best source is the R&A, and this is what it says about Local Rule F-5 and Rule 16.1: Limits on Location of Relief Area: Must be in the general area, Now if your ball is in rough, you can drop in grass cut to fairway height, because they are both considered general area. The Putting Green is not part of the general area.

@@GolfRulesQuestions thanks for that I think 16.1/1 isn’t mega clear 16.1/1 says the player does not have to drop it in the same condition 16.1/2 refers to a second abnormal course condition, which then refers to general areas. Whereas 16.1/1 does not mention general area

@@GolfShow So look at where the ball is currently lying - general area, that means that Rule 16.1b will apply. If the ball is in the bunker - Rule 16.1c. And if on the green, then it is Rule 16.1d. In your video the ball is in the general area, so 16.1b applies. You determine your NPCR and then drop within one club-length, no nearer the hole, in the same area of the course (general area). kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4qld2WaZphsack

OK, divots. I am happy to see relief from divots on a fairway on the following two conditions. 1. Define a divot in a way that any scrape or dent in the fairway can quickly be classified (i.e. is it still a divot a week on with grass growing in it? And point 2. If you hit a ball in the rough and get a good lie you put it in a worse place as why should you get good luck if you wont accept bad?

Agree there Paul, it has to be the ball at rest in a divot...that must be the most infuriating 'no rule' in golf 🤬🤬🤬 Great and interesting show 👍

What if your ball is in the red stakes on the left side of the fairwa but the cart path is right next to the penalty area - can you drop on the other side of the cart path or does it have to be ‘in line with the flag’ and can you go back to the fairway??

Hi Marco. I’d check the local rules of the course At Fulford the path on the par 3 14th runs down the left of the hole, however immediately left of the path is OOB. This path is made of astroturf and you play off it (as you can’t drop nearer the hole and to go further away would be dropping it oob), while all other paths you get relief from
