This is a little bit of an eye-opener here. Thank you for this “Missing Link” advice. I’ve just started my fourth season and have gotten better every year. with this little nuance the dropping the hands and then turning into the hitting zone has really helped. No more over the top. I’m feeling more power and getting more distance because of it... Not to mention straighter!

I'm a "hands-n-arms" guy, and that has always worked best for me. I rotate enough dropping the hands. I have strong arms, can do 10--12 pullups at once, that's power enough. Ball goes about 280--290 at sea level with the driver. 4 iron goes about 200+ in the air. Can hit my 4 wood about 250 in the air. I know how to rotate, but it just doesn't work out for me consistency wise. Maybe I should rotate more for the driver and long irons, and hit dropping the hands for shorter clubs. I don't know. I have tried playing both ways, I just feel more confident dropping the hands with a late turn. Glad to see this video. It is timely and a good discussion of the two basic approaches to swinging. and it is the first time I have seen this topic covered anywhere. Everyone want's to teach you THEIR way of swinging, instead of discussing swing mechanics generally.

Your Awesome and correct! I am 50 now, and I have always loved to do a nice relaxed rotation in my swing. But my back won't quite keep the same speed or follow through, like I did when I was a bit younger. I have recently started staying a bit more up right, and dropping my hands through the hitting zone. There is less of a twist feeling now for me, but it has helped to keep my distance and my ball straight. Thanks for the video!

This is a great video. I would say though that if you're using your body to rotate then don't forget to keep your head steady until impact and let it come up naturally. i have had personal issues with this while i was learning to use my body to rotate and square the club-face, i forgot about keeping head steady throughout swing which can cause problems. Just something to think about for somebody that may be thinking about using the body more in their swing. I think the body rotation swing works more for me more with driver and dropping the hands seems better with irons, just my experience.

Thank you Christina I know you are talking directly to me😊 by explaining to me the différence between the two swing types. I must confess; I experienced both together as I played golf yesterday. Recently I discovered an old video from Tom Tomasello talking about the Karate Chop ( Drop) as we begin the downswing. And as you know I went to the range a few days ago speaking and filming my new discovery « The Karate Chop downswing ». Thank You for taking time to check it out. On my game yesterday I had many beautiful straight shots; but one too many went straight left; and, after reposition my body; went straight to the right. When I refocused back to my new Karate Chop downswing my ball flight was straight and perfect to my target area. My brother in law saying « Nice shot Tom ». But ; then I could not out figure exactly what was happening to me; so after awhile every video I had seen on KZbin flashed before my eyes and parasitic thoughts came rushing to my brain. My brother in law even told my wife I had milt down. I could have killed him for that one! Ha Ha Now I know I mixed the two very different swings together. So you are spot as I experienced for myself that dropping the club with fast hands combined with fast hips to start the downswing will not work. Now with this great video I know the deference between the two. Cheers As I said before; you are the best!

Do you think one way is better and easier on the body long term? The body rotator style seems like a little more hard on the body than the ones that release and rotate through but I'm not sure. i like the vid primarily because a teaching pro is telling us that either way works, one isn't better than the other. Of course, i'd assume more pros do the rotate method because I see it in them all the time, but we're not all super flexible like the pros either :)

Thank you I have been fighting this for many years. I never heard anybody explain it like you do and it is great. I have gone back and forth on both methods and might have even mixed them up and I could never figure out which method is right. Now you say both are. thank you but how do I decide which method I should use? Seems like I play better letting my hands drop than turning but it takes good timing for me. The other method seems like it causes me to go over the top. I guess I rotate at the wrong angle. Also should I let the arms drop down or force them down if I use the arms down swing?

Dropping hands really helps me with curing a tendency from out in swing path. Body rotation and leaving the hands up, i will have to leave at least for now, because it makes it harder for me to keep the shoulders from spinning. Question, though, which is more powerful, or not much difference?

@316rms4 жыл бұрын
Nice way to explain the differences between the two. Sure are a lot of ways to swing and hit a golf ball for sure. One question...Noticed the club gets stuck behind the hands near impact which then requires lots of forearm/or body rotation to square up the club. Do you think then timing may become a possible consistent issue? Just a thought .
@MorePars4 жыл бұрын
Yes - absolutely. Timing is key and getting stuck can be caused by any number of factors - different for each player. My tendency is too inside which can get me stuck.

@breakthrough86283 жыл бұрын
am a rotator. I have a question i hope you can help with. I find it impossible to disengage my arm, forearm, and wrist muscle if i engage them on the backswing at any point. My solution is to remain completely loose and disengaged during the back swing so i sling the club back w a body turn and thru w the body turn. I play fairly well w this (mod 80s consistently). My question is this; if you engage forearms and wrist muscels during backswing what exactly do you do to relax thise muscles at the top to allow the club to drop?
@NocSuKow4 жыл бұрын
I drop the hands but the issue is then I have to flip. I constantly have inflamed wrists the issues this causes. Do you have a drill or recommendation thx!

@golfdoc19504 жыл бұрын
Interested in your opinion of using lateral side bend on the downswing to put the hands in hitting position and then extending the right arm while rotating to release the club and square the club face. Do you call that arm dropping or rotation? Or a hybrid? I can feel my arms lowering but I retain the angle in my trail elbow, whereas if I lower the club I lose some angle and maybe can’t leverage the shaft as fast.
@josch57364 жыл бұрын
Spot on!
@tombeach12622 жыл бұрын
It seems the right elbow stays more into the hip area when the club drops. For the rotate swing the elbow moves more into the impact area and does not wedge into the hip. Is that the difference between an swinger and a hitter? After 15 years I still feel like a novice in this sport.

Is one way more likely to help over-the-toppers?
@MorePars4 жыл бұрын
Yes the hands drop feeling is better for over the toppers. As you drop hands, chest is passive. Over-the Toppers tend to rotate too soon and/or out of sequence.
@jamesbond46334 жыл бұрын
Which one do you prefer? Drop or rotate? I am working on a rotating swing right now. Seems to get the club in the "slot" more consistently and under pressure in my amateur tournaments.
@jamesbond4633 Жыл бұрын
Ok ...It is 2 years later and now I have gone through a number of swing changes. I think for me the drop is much better and easier on my body than the rotate. This is a great explanation between the 2 types of swings and as you say it is player preference. The only thing I noticed in your demonstrations that both share is that the right arm is unfolding as you drop or as you rotate. I used to try to keep the angle the same but this caused major issues and inconsistency and more pain in my back because I would have to bend more to get the club to the ground. So excellent video for sparking some good swing pointers!!!! Spring is around the corner!!!!!!!
@richardbeckel59384 жыл бұрын
Thx. & excellent demonstration. Recently I've been trying what I call the new- style swing with a squat and full hip turn. This move works if you're DJ or a super flexible/athletic 18 y.o. but it's not easy to do. Your advice makes sense because the swing still finishes using power from the hip turn. On a side note, I'm personally fighting early extension especially with fairway woods. You've probably covered the topic previously but you're such a good teacher I'd love to get your thoughts.

It is my firm belief that if you begin the downswing by rotating your body you will expend all that hip energy prior to impact, leaving you with nothing left to hit with except hand speed. Conversely, if you begin the swing by dropping your hands, you will find that your hands are well ahead of your hips again using power from mostly hands. IMHO, it should be coordinated such that for every inch of hip rotation there should be one inch of hand drop. That allows for energy from both movements to be imparted into the ball simultaneously. In reality however the hands are still developing speed until just past the ball.
@gustavogarciaswengel86793 жыл бұрын
Until this video, I thought you were supposed to do both. By only rotating , arms loose and no conscious dropping, I impact better, ball flight is straighter, less fades. Thank you.

It's easy to watch some of the endless number of golf instructional videos and in turn a) wind up totally confused or b) have the urge to give up altogether. Well, maybe I've gone hyperbolic. No matter, it's best, as Ms More Pars states, to find the swing that works best for you. I play with a guy who has a slice that would horrify most golfers, but he steps onto the tee, tees the ball, takes his stance and swings away … all within 5 or 6 seconds. Gospel. He always hits the same sweeping slice each and every time, rarely mis-hittig (looks suspicious without the hyphen). 180-200 yard drives always in the fairway … always. He'll generally shoot 80-85 but he has his swing and game. He's 73. He enjoys golf.
