On the dimples, if they were more consistent and precise as a golf ball do you think the results would be different? I think the dimples may have been too deep and uneven which may have cause resistance? I'm just brainstorming here. But supposedly on golf balls the dimples reduce air turbulence making the object fly faster and further. Maybe this is a debunk? Anyone have any insite on this?

yes, a little bit. but only if he shot them at subsonic speeds.

A golf ball is a sphere with very accurately placed dimples of a similar depth. Those slugs were ALMOST complete spheres with randomly placed dimples with mix-matched depths plus "stabalizing" fins.There is no comparison. Although I do recall a WWII Dam-buster bomb that was golf related, possibly a proto-type with dimples, but remember they setteled on giving it some back spin before releasing it so it would stay close to the dam before detonation at depth. Anyway, great vid!

These tests don't really address the issue at all. Dimples may reduce wind resistance at sub-sonic speeds. I'll go out on a limb and say that at any reasonable distance for a shotgun it's going to just be a gimmick to increase the price of the slug.

The dimples are supposed to break up the rings of eddying air that form around a sphere as it passes through the air. These rings magnify the effect of the low pressure area immediately behind the ball creating drag which will slow the velocity and shorten the distance of flight.

Huuumm, bout three years ago I was in a little country store and found some of those on the shelf, four boxes. When I seen they were marked at one dollar a box I asked the owner why, he just wanted to get rid of them so I bought them and then shot all of them at old fire extinguishers. Had a lot of fun and they were very accurate ! Now I wish I had saved some ! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

Now I don't know too much about the details but it sounds like they're really putting the hammer down on gun channels this time, so I've heard. If what i heard is true then (if you haven't made one already) you should maybe make a video about what the future holds for your channel and things like that, Just to kinda update us on the current situation maybe? I was patiently waiting for the results on the dimpled slug. Long before I saw it, I figured at that speed, the dimples wouldn’t do much and it didn’t. The reason I was interested at all, is that years ago I was a semi-professional surfer in Hawaii. A new concept-surfboard was being created where I had custom surfboards made. It was called the “Phazer” and its main feature was dimples on the bottom, from about halfway up and all the way to the tail. The concept of course did come from the golf ball and the aerodynamics of breaking up the surface tension of the ball, letting it travel faster with less drag. I picked up my Phazer-bottom surfboard and the concept worked. It was the fastest board I’ve ever had. But the dimple thing only worked in very glassy waves. In bumpy waves, it just rode like a normal surfboard. In glassy waves though, that thing took off like a rocket! I could hear and feel the turbulence under the board and when it kicked into overdrive I had to be ready for it, otherwise it would take off without me and leave me behind. They don’t make them anymore since surfboard technology has advance well beyond the 80’s. Anyway, it was a cool concept and it really made a difference in speed. I was hoping it would do the same thing with the slug but nope. Maybe if they invented a slug that had a top speed of 70 miles an hour, the dimples would help. Thanks for another cool video, guys.

So, we took our 1 oz 12 gauge ball round, and fired it into a concrete block..... due to the nature of the reverse back spin on the ball round, it blew a concrete block into dust ; and kept on going.. we never found any of the spent rounds..... maybe next time we convert some of them into tracer rounds, fire a few of them at night , so we can track their trajectory down range.........

Finally someone found a use for a harbor freight Chicago electric tool. As for the “dimpled” slugs: First off, golf balls are subsonic. Secondly, the dimples a.k.a. turbulator pits are aerodynamically engineered and precisely manufactured......unlike the drilled holes in the slugs you had. There are so many factors considered including the transition from supersonic to subsonic which is very violent.

I think the dimples would only make a difference when flying subsonic. Dimples are used as vortex makers in aerodynamics so the air stay attached to the golf ball for longer instead of detaching at the back of the ball. That would create less pressure drag in exchange to the friction drag. That sounds fun enough but at supersonic speeds things tend to change just a little LOL So we should not expect the same results. As a suggestion, if you load way less than the used in the video to reach a 700 or even 600 ft/s, we probably would see an increase in speed when using the dimpled slug.

Might've been slower because drilling dimples that deep adds more surface area to the slug, and more surface area means more drag. Note that golfball dimples are fairly shallow/low profile, as if made by a very large sphere rather than a tiny rotary tool burr. Shallow dimples, if done right, don't add any more surface area, and are just inverse curves maintaining the same radius as the golf ball (like when you put a slight dent in a ping pong ball). The dimples on golfballs are also VERY uniform.

As an Aerospace engineer the “put dimples on it” thing is my biggest pet peeve. The reason it helps with the golf ball is that a sphere undergoes a “drag crisis” at a transitional Reynolds number. Re = L*v/nu This drag crisis is a sudden reduction in the drag coefficient caused because the air over the sphere becomes chaotic and mixed up which causes it to follow the shape of the the sphere better reducing pressure drag (but increasing skin friction drag). Putting dimples on a ball shot out of a gun is dumb because while L may be slightly smaller (for a sphere this is the diameter) the v, velocity, is multiple orders of magnitude higher than even the best golfer’s long drive. (Nu, the kinematic viscosity is about the same, a property of the air’s temperature and pressure.) So dimples seem to artificially increase the numerator of the Reynolds number, but for a shotgun projectile this is already at least an order of magnitude higher than a dimples golf ball. It’s extra dumb when there is a tail section/non-separating sabot because this is either acting as a fairing preventing the flow separation pressure drag the dimples could hypothetically be preventing or, in the present case, creating a sharp transition to a wake region that virtually guarantees a separated flow and low pressure wake. Also, for a sphere, the coefficient of drag is lowest at the drag Chris is point, experiencing a sharp drop relative to separated lower Re flows, but it increases again with increasing Reynolds number, and it increases monotonically! FOR THE LOVE OF SCIENCE STOP IT WITH THE “PUT GOLF BALL DIMPLES ON IT” TROPE! (Note: comment not directed at Jeff and other Toeflader people but society as a whole)

One surviving prototype of Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb, has dimples like a golf ball. First the dimples went, and then a more cylindrical form was adopted. I think the dimples did something, in fact, but whatever it was, it clearly wasn't enough to justify the manufacturing cost of putting dimples in a very large and very strong steel casing. In fact, making the full-size production bomb strong enough proved to be the main problem. Smooth "Balls" were used in anger on one (of many) attacks on the Tirpitz, in the form of standard naval mines adapted for release from Halifax bombers with delayed-action fuses. The idea being that these would roll down the sides of the Fjiord, enter the water and roll under the anchored battleship. It proved impossible to get one anywhere near the target, and Wing Commander Don Bennett had to walk to Sweden to escape the Germans: an adventure he would have preferred to avoid. Dr Wallis seems to have tried everything at some point, and the successful ideas were generally the simplest.

A few years back ; we developed a 12 gauge ball round ; that spins backwards at the same angular speed ' as the forward speed of the round. Inside contains a solid core of depleted uranium. The calculated energy is double of a standard slug round traveling at the same speed and same weight. Is only available to trusted friends of ours...

I think you can clearly see some additional damage taking place at the entry wound in the slow motion camera shots. The dimples seem to make the projectile more abrasive on contact with the target, causing a more violent entry wound.

I'm not a shooter, so in all likelihood I'm talking nonsense, but if the point of rifling is to 'pick up' the projectile in order to get it rotating, then fins on the projectile might affect the way that it's 'picked up'. It's not as if the fins and the rifling will ever 'marry up', so couldn't they interfere with each other? As stated, I'm not a shooter, but i think i know a shooter when i see one, and Danny, great as always. Not forgetting you Jeff, for an excellent production, in every way. Finally, thanks to the contributor, who provided the slugs in the first place.

Ian Macfarlane I would think even if they don’t ‘marry up’ that the fins would still catch the rifling and have a good effect. Where I think the difference would make an effect is when the twist rate in the barrel doesn’t match the twist rate on the slug. Who knows. I did find it interesting the rifling was the worst of the three barrels.
@ianmacfarlane1241
@ianmacfarlane1241 6 жыл бұрын
Zeke770 Sorry about the tardy response - I didn't ever receive a notification of your comment. I guess that's what a meant by "marry up" - I'm believe that there may be 5 to 7 rifling grooves, with a twist rate of once over perhaps 16". (Forgive me if I'm incorrect in this, however the point stands). If the projectile had 18 fins (for instance) with a 'shallower' or 'deeper' twist, then that's what I was getting at. I'm not au fait with firearms or firearm terminology, although I'm slowly getting there, but I could picture a potential issue with the rifled barrel - as was shown. Hindsight 😉 Thank you for your response - it's a steep learning curve, do I do appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I hope you both held your breath as that plane was spraying! If you're not getting the shot framed well, in the heat of the moment if someone moves things around, opt for a few stills detailing the damage caused or have the 'shooter' locate and then hold the target towards the camera and move in to frame your shots. Ah shooting that Motorola was a dark move, it's gonna be an antique in a few years Another great vid and Danny is a demon with in full semi-auto mode..

The fins on the back of the slug are meant to make the projectile twist counterclockwise the rifling in your Barrel makes the projectile spin clockwise they are counteracting each other causing the instability.

People don't seem to understand why there are dimples in a golf ball and how they actually function. The dimples are actually only functional for the part of the golf ball that is pointing backward. The dimples at the back make sure the airflow of the air rushing over the ball stays attached to the surface of the golf ball longer, this creates a smaller low-pressure zone behind the ball and therefore causes it to have less drag. Putting dimples on part of an object that only faces forward makes no sense what so ever. The only type of bullet that could potentially profit from dimples is a spherical one, but since other shapes are proven to be superior, there is no reason for this.

I'm not surprised the dimples didn't do anything. What they do for a golf ball is increase the aerodynamic effect of any spin, i.e., they hook or slice more, and more importantly, they get more loft from backspin.

The purpose of dimples on a golf ball is to increase distance by reducing wind resistance. This is accomplished by the dimples creating an air cavity that the ball rides in. It reduces wind resistance enough for the ball to maintain momentum and travel farther. The third test actually proves this. The unaltered slug began to drop due to wind drag, which is why it hit lower on the target. The dimpled slug didn't drop. The air cavity created by the dimples maintained enough momentum to carry it farther without dropping.

Try hammering in the dimples in a regular pattern instead of drilling them out in a random way. Golf balls get added speed by changing the turbulence surrounding the moving object the same way the "sharkskin" dimpled or textured coating on submarines does. Disturbing the laminar flow around the object seems to defeat some drag.. I'd be curious to see how ball slugs would perform with a regular pattern of impressed dimples and no plastic follower supposedly imparting spin for accuracy.

I guess the one question left unanswered is if the dimples _do_ reduce drag, would the retained velocity be greater at long range? If so, that might well make up for the reduced weight; light, high-velocity projectiles usually have greater energy than heavier slower projectiles.

you might see more difference in a solid and dimple slug without the stabilization fins, jsut your standard round ball slug would probably see more effect. be it positive or negative is to be discovered. wouldnt mind seeing a slug that just has a series of holes drilled through it.

If you look at a golf ball they have 400 dimples per ball. 400 being the ideal. So in order to replicate the dimpling on the slug you need to calculate surface area of golfball divided by depth/ circumference of dimple then transfer that calculation to surface area of the slug. ie smaller dimples but more of them than you had on yours. it looked like you were using a fairly big drill bit for the size of the slug. I think something with a 1.5mm square area bit would suffice.
