Huuumm, bout three years ago I was in a little country store and found some of those on the shelf, four boxes. When I seen they were marked at one dollar a box I asked the owner why, he just wanted to get rid of them so I bought them and then shot all of them at old fire extinguishers. Had a lot of fun and they were very accurate ! Now I wish I had saved some ! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

On the dimples, if they were more consistent and precise as a golf ball do you think the results would be different? I think the dimples may have been too deep and uneven which may have cause resistance? I'm just brainstorming here. But supposedly on golf balls the dimples reduce air turbulence making the object fly faster and further. Maybe this is a debunk? Anyone have any insite on this?
@kilgoar6 жыл бұрын
yes, a little bit. but only if he shot them at subsonic speeds.

They have dimples to create a laminar fluid flow. Its solid fluid dynamics. Not sure about the rounds he used. We would need more information and better tests.
@dystopianparadise59166 жыл бұрын
A golf ball is a sphere with very accurately placed dimples of a similar depth. Those slugs were ALMOST complete spheres with randomly placed dimples with mix-matched depths plus "stabalizing" fins.There is no comparison. Although I do recall a WWII Dam-buster bomb that was golf related, possibly a proto-type with dimples, but remember they setteled on giving it some back spin before releasing it so it would stay close to the dam before detonation at depth. Anyway, great vid!
@MrChainrule6 жыл бұрын
These tests don't really address the issue at all. Dimples may reduce wind resistance at sub-sonic speeds. I'll go out on a limb and say that at any reasonable distance for a shotgun it's going to just be a gimmick to increase the price of the slug.
@martinmccomb54626 жыл бұрын
The dimples are supposed to break up the rings of eddying air that form around a sphere as it passes through the air. These rings magnify the effect of the low pressure area immediately behind the ball creating drag which will slow the velocity and shorten the distance of flight.

I'm not a shooter, so in all likelihood I'm talking nonsense, but if the point of rifling is to 'pick up' the projectile in order to get it rotating, then fins on the projectile might affect the way that it's 'picked up'. It's not as if the fins and the rifling will ever 'marry up', so couldn't they interfere with each other? As stated, I'm not a shooter, but i think i know a shooter when i see one, and Danny, great as always. Not forgetting you Jeff, for an excellent production, in every way. Finally, thanks to the contributor, who provided the slugs in the first place.
@dannyakatrikerred73816 жыл бұрын
Ian Macfarlane Thanks Ian. 👍🏻. 🇺🇸😎
@MrJeepinZeke6 жыл бұрын
Ian Macfarlane I would think even if they don’t ‘marry up’ that the fins would still catch the rifling and have a good effect. Where I think the difference would make an effect is when the twist rate in the barrel doesn’t match the twist rate on the slug. Who knows. I did find it interesting the rifling was the worst of the three barrels.
@ianmacfarlane12416 жыл бұрын
Zeke770 Sorry about the tardy response - I didn't ever receive a notification of your comment. I guess that's what a meant by "marry up" - I'm believe that there may be 5 to 7 rifling grooves, with a twist rate of once over perhaps 16". (Forgive me if I'm incorrect in this, however the point stands). If the projectile had 18 fins (for instance) with a 'shallower' or 'deeper' twist, then that's what I was getting at. I'm not au fait with firearms or firearm terminology, although I'm slowly getting there, but I could picture a potential issue with the rifled barrel - as was shown. Hindsight 😉 Thank you for your response - it's a steep learning curve, do I do appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I was patiently waiting for the results on the dimpled slug. Long before I saw it, I figured at that speed, the dimples wouldn’t do much and it didn’t. The reason I was interested at all, is that years ago I was a semi-professional surfer in Hawaii. A new concept-surfboard was being created where I had custom surfboards made. It was called the “Phazer” and its main feature was dimples on the bottom, from about halfway up and all the way to the tail. The concept of course did come from the golf ball and the aerodynamics of breaking up the surface tension of the ball, letting it travel faster with less drag. I picked up my Phazer-bottom surfboard and the concept worked. It was the fastest board I’ve ever had. But the dimple thing only worked in very glassy waves. In bumpy waves, it just rode like a normal surfboard. In glassy waves though, that thing took off like a rocket! I could hear and feel the turbulence under the board and when it kicked into overdrive I had to be ready for it, otherwise it would take off without me and leave me behind. They don’t make them anymore since surfboard technology has advance well beyond the 80’s. Anyway, it was a cool concept and it really made a difference in speed. I was hoping it would do the same thing with the slug but nope. Maybe if they invented a slug that had a top speed of 70 miles an hour, the dimples would help. Thanks for another cool video, guys.

People don't seem to understand why there are dimples in a golf ball and how they actually function. The dimples are actually only functional for the part of the golf ball that is pointing backward. The dimples at the back make sure the airflow of the air rushing over the ball stays attached to the surface of the golf ball longer, this creates a smaller low-pressure zone behind the ball and therefore causes it to have less drag. Putting dimples on part of an object that only faces forward makes no sense what so ever. The only type of bullet that could potentially profit from dimples is a spherical one, but since other shapes are proven to be superior, there is no reason for this.

Hi, this is Chris from Durban South Africa. The dimples on a golf ball have two functions to the best of my knowledge. Great video!! I knew the answer before being an avid golfer lol The dimples work because of backspin and the entire round ball back-spinning and side spinning (majority back spin) the dimples create less overall surface drag. If you dimple only the side of a slug spinning clockwise or counter you may get a similar result, but dimples on the crown would make no difference at all. A similar analogy would be that a baseball might have less drag with dimples all around verse a football with dimples all around, dimples on the side of a football might help but on the nose, no.

I fond out who made them ." Ballistic products inc." the Aq slug was replaced by a newer slug . Thug Slug 12ga 1oz (25/pak) 15.99 a box The Thug Slug is our most advanced slug design to date. Over the course of over 40 years of lab and field testing, we've seen and shot countless slug designs. Nothing has performed like the Thug Slug. The Thug series of slugs was thus named by one of the guys in our plant. His words were, "Thugs are flat-nosed, hard-hitting fighters." The name stuck. The guys in our ballistic lab are also crowing about the performance of the Thug Slug series because they satisfy all the critical criteria of a superior shotshell projectile: Hard-hitting performance in every size and weight. Precise accuracy from both rifled and smoothbore barrels. Loading ease with data utilizing roll and fold crimps. Our original goal was to develop a great 1-ounce 12ga slug to replace the venerable AQ-Slug. Our search led us directly to the entire Thug Slug series. Indeed, there is a slug in this series for almost every type of slug shooter and slug-oriented game. The net result is what you've come to expect: tight target groupings and hard hitting, knock-down performance in both smoothbore and rifled barrels. The Thug Slug series is available in four different variations:

So, we took our 1 oz 12 gauge ball round, and fired it into a concrete block..... due to the nature of the reverse back spin on the ball round, it blew a concrete block into dust ; and kept on going.. we never found any of the spent rounds..... maybe next time we convert some of them into tracer rounds, fire a few of them at night , so we can track their trajectory down range.........

Here's the thought. Dimpling only increases the overall velocity by reducing form frag, that's why golf balls use them. But, dimpling in a non-precision practice of depth in drilling and locating those dimpling holes can throw off balance of the rotating sphere, which throws off accuracy. So af it flies faster, then does it hit ore accurately, or odes the higher speed and inaccuracy mean more off target?

They use smooth bore because the rounds are to long and the barrel to short so they use fins instead.
@Bullet4MyEnemy6 жыл бұрын
As someone else said, they use fin stabilisation rather than rifling. As an additional bonus though, having a smooth bore allows for higher muzzle pressure and velocity because no energy is being lost to the extra friction and rotation with the rifling grooves. Also increases the life of the barrel, as you can probably imagine the amount of heat and wear generated by a tank cannon is preeeeeeeety crazy, so cutting back on that is a bonus.
@Keldor3146 жыл бұрын
One thing that can happen is the fins and the grooves "picking fights" with each other. If you imagine a fin kinda scraping against the grooves as it goes past, it might get damaged or deflect the angle of the round coming out of the barrel, either of which would end up hurting flight characteristics overall. Another thing to consider is that soft rounds, like lead or copper coated lead - basically what you see in an ordinary handgun or rifle - will deform from the force of being shot out the barrel, and will end up trying to flatten out and expand, which squeezes them against the grooves, making them "interlock" slightly like a train wheel on a track, forcing the round to spin with the grooves. This works well with round blunt butted rounds that evenly fill the barrel, but fins will act more irregularly, aggravating any already existing problems of the fins interacting with the grooves. Finally, with the tank rounds, it should be noted that they tend to be made of much harder materials, ideal for armor penetrating, but which won't deform out to squeeze against the grooves. This means that the barrel having grooves not only makes it wear out faster, but they won't spin up the projectile very effectively anyway.

Yeah, it's something to hope for, but one has to ask what the vague policies are for if not specifically removing content like this. Would it be worth staying on YT if it meant a dramatic shift in tone and a removal of technical information?

Finally someone found a use for a harbor freight Chicago electric tool. As for the “dimpled” slugs: First off, golf balls are subsonic. Secondly, the dimples a.k.a. turbulator pits are aerodynamically engineered and precisely manufactured......unlike the drilled holes in the slugs you had. There are so many factors considered including the transition from supersonic to subsonic which is very violent.

Back in the day of sails, gunners would sometimes hammer dimples into their cannonballs to give them better flight characteristics. Golf balls use a similar principle combined with the backspin generated by striking it with the club, but it only works on a tumbling object. At least that's my layman's understanding of the effect. The fins were great for making the slugs spin, but prevented the tumbling that would assist a dimpled slug. I would love to see a comparison just hammering dimples into a ball slug and firing it from a smooth bore gun at much longer ranges. I'm curious to see if the dimpled slug would show less drop than a smooth ball of the same weight over say, 100+ yards. You know, if you wanted to revisit the concept.

28, 420 views with 1.8k likes versus 26 dislikes...Think KZbin, you are letting a very small minority determine the entertainment and enjoyment of many. If each watcher is valued equally, does that make sense? Or are we somehow sub-human in your eyes?

Dimples on golf balls add lift when they're hit with an upspin; the air passing around the ball adheres to the dimples on the surface, creating a low pressure area on the top and a high pressure one on the bottom, exactly like a wing. They're doing the same thing on the dimpled slug, only the axis of rotation (thus the direction the lift generated by the spin) is perpendicular to the slugs flight path, so it veers. Hope that helps.

Hey guys, huge fan of your channel. The dimples on a golf ball are for increased range, not speed or energy transfer. It creates a bubble of air around the ball, along with the reduced weight, that decreases drag. Could you do a video testing the max distance of a dimpled and non-dimpled slug? I've seen tests with golf balls and its a noticeable difference.
