The Myths
Here’s a few things I want to clear up before we get into what decisions you’ll need to make on your journey to breaking 80.
In order to consistently break 80 you don’t need to:
Make many birdies (if at all)
Hit a bunch of fairways (you can miss more than half of them)
Hit a ton of greens (you can average as little as 6-7 a round)
Drain putts from over 10 feet
Breaking 80 doesn’t really look like most golfers think it does. You are not firing at pins and making birdie putts left and right. It’s mostly about eliminating the huge mistakes, and making sure certain parts of your game are strong enough to carry you through the round.
In my opinion, the things that are most important are:
Keeping your tee shots in play
Avoiding three putts
Hitting enough greens to make pars
Having a “functional” short game
On most courses you can make 7 bogeys and still break 80. If you start making double or triple bogeys, then it will become infinitely harder.
So it’s not necessarily about your golfing greatness, it’s more about your golfing steadiness.
You have to be really good at something, or pretty good at everything
I’ve been around all kinds of golfers who are capable of breaking 80 on any given day. From my own personal experience, and witnessing others, here is what I can tell you.
You need to either excel at one part of the game, or be extremely proficient in all parts.
What do I mean by that?
Essentially it all boils down to your ball striking, and your ability to score inside 100 yards with your wedges and putter.
I have seen golfers who are ball striking machines but have relatively poor wedge and putter play, and still manage to break 80.

I know that this is an old video but I have started to watch all of the videos with OMP. Outstanding information about course management! (Especially for us "old folks".) I am now 71, stopped playing golf for 15+ years and have been trying to get back into it. I'm realizing that I have been trying to play at my older abilities, and this information is absolutely enlightening! Can't wait to play my next round with a renewed approach to scoring while recognizing my true abilities. (Don't know if you will see this but....Thank you, Liam! And a special "Thank you" to OMP! Class act!!)

I think he's a genius - I''m a 5 handicapper and my friend Will - a 14 handicapper has finally beaten me playing scratch golf for the first time in about 10 years and he claims the reason is due to this man OMP. I was desperate to see why my friend has improved so much. I now see why. OMP is an absolute legend. I'd love to see OMP go through his entire golf bag and show how he hits each club - or the one's he usually uses. What an awesome channel.

I’d love to see OMP give a swing lesson for older golfers. It looks like he’s a master with his lower body. My dad just turned 80 but gave up golf years ago because he says his shoulder hurts. His dad lived to 103, playing 5 days/wk until 98. He could have kept going but said he played too slow, as he refused to ride and always shoulder carried his little bag of clubs. Amazing old grandpa!

This has helped my scores! Learning more about course management and playing to an area with the biggest margin for error is huge. On my local course this also means hitting driver on some shorter holes to get to where the wider part of the fairway is. I could hit an iron or 3 wood on those holes but hitting driver actually takes some trouble out of play so it isn't always about laying up just like OMP points out on that last hole too!

Great video! Love OMP! Two years ago, I watched OMP use a 7 iron to bump & run onto the green from a few yards off. That changed my game overnight. I got rid of all my fancy wedges and now use either a 7 or 8 iron to bump & run about 90% of the time when I'm around the greens. And it works! My short game improved significantly from that one simple change. The ol' bump & run is the greatest short game trick ever. And YES! More lessons from OMP! I want to know how he manages to hit the ball so well so consistently--even while he's talking! Amazing golfer. Great watching you two together. More lessons from OMP and Liam please!

LIAM - OMP is an inspiration. This is my grandmother! As a teen, years ago, it was so frustrating playing with her. I could hit the ball 250+, and she never hit a ball more than 180. Yet, at the end of the round, I'd have a 85, and she'd have a 78. She was always dead center in the fairway, and never in the rough or traps, and she was amazing chipper (always a pitch and run, never a high loft wedge trying to stop it) and putter. I'm now approaching 70, and starting to play golf again. I need to remember all this great advice, and maybe in a decade I can shoot my age.
@jorgecallico9177
@jorgecallico9177 3 жыл бұрын
He illustrates the main problem every golfer who has never broken 100 has. The average duffer tries to take a full swing like the pros do and all they do is spray it left or right. Either that or top it. A long time ago an 75 y/old fellow told me to "just take a half swing!" Well heck with my size the ball still goes 150 yards on a half swing! Three shots like that puts the ball on a par four green, ready for a one putt par. Or a one putt bogey on the par five with an added approach shot. The who key to this kind of playing is to "USE BRAIN NOT BRAUN"!!! Never just walk up to a ball and swing. Instead think about where you KNOW that this ball will land. Learning to play with the brain means to own CONTROL over onesself. You know that you can hit a fairway wood perfectly straight with a half swing. So? Use this to you advantage! The pros practice twelve hours/day. All of them do. Unless you're playing this much? Don't take a full swing, In fact some of the pros I see who hit crummy approach shots would be advised to follow my thoughts. And watch Trevino! Lee is a golfing God. His most poignant statement was to bet on the golfer "with the fewest moving parts" during the final day of a tournament. Because the psychological pressure is just so high that it'll wreck the poor feller with the most complex swing.

I’m guilty of getting in my head thinking I need to kill the ball then it goes no where or I’ll kill it but in the wrong direction! Slowing down your swing but still getting a good contact is definitely the best thing you can do, just need to get in a bette habit of it

This video reminds me of playing with my Grandmother when I was 16 (back in 1986). She played just like OMP. I’d be trying to bomb drivers and smash irons and end up hitting them all over the course. My grandmother couldn’t hit the ball more than about 180 yards and every hole she’d be putting for par and make bogey at the worst. She shot 84 that day....I shot 104. Love this video. Now that I’m 50 I’m finally starting to play more like OMP and my gramma. I still can hit the ball a decent way but this method of thinking your way around a golf course has my game as good as it’s ever been.

I've played this course many times and been many more over par than Pat was here, through either trying to hit big drives or playing shots outside of my ability. Pure gold! Thanks guys! A "senior" scratch golfer told me years ago....if you REALLY want to decrease your score, leave your driver and ego at home. :)

Pat, Thank you for the insights and advice about thinking your way around the course. I've been playing 58 years and still try and go for distance off the tee and over estimate my ability to hit the green in two, which more often than not lands me in trouble. I need to think more and scramble less.

Again, what a pleasure to watch OMP play golf. I’m at the age where this sort of smart golf is helping quite a bit. I saw a video ‘Are You Hitting As Far as You Think You Are’ really made me think. The traffic light system is keeping me out of trouble! Gotta remember to get my 8 iron out more often and leave the wedge in the bag.

Golfers who play to their tendencies have more success than golfers who fight their tendencies. If you slice the ball, then play for the slice. Don't aim down the middle and hope you hit it straight. Aim down the left side and slice it back to the middle. Playing good golf is about taking out your ego and playing to your ability. Cheers Golfmates!

What an absolute legend, can easily see why he was category 1 for all those years, will definitely be using his alignment tip on longer putts. If I’m half the golfer Omp is when I’m 80 I’ll be very happy, keep up the good work lads 👍

Hi Liam - it's about time we had some OMP merchandise, for example, a bobble hat or a cap with "OMP LEGEND" on it! Sure it would a best seller across the world Great gifts of golfing knowledge from OMP as usual I'd like to see OMP take on 3 par 3's; short, medium and long to get his thinking on club and positioning. I'd find that most useful Thank You
