Golgo 13: The Professional is just a taste of one of the longest running manga series ever. It's also an excellent way to get into the franchise as long as you can overlook some of the more aged aspects of it.

Golgo 13 is the longest running manga still in publication. It's sold more volumes than any other manga save One Piece and Dragon Ball. If that isn't enough of a reason to check it out, the feature animated film, Golgo 13: The Professional, is also the first movie to ever make use of animated CGI. No matter how you slice it, Golgo 13 is a section of anime and manga history and one that is typically overlooked. But we here at Bonsai Pop thrive on checking out older stuff that maybe fell through the cracks of the general public. So come take a look at Golgo 13: The Professional and see if you think the franchise is for you.

Thanks for watching! I would love for this video to do well, The Professional is one of my favorite movies and more people need to know about it! Also I’m so excited about the new displate 😭 I went to Kumiko cause she makes such good grey scale shojo. If you get it with a white frame it looks just like a manga panel, it’s the dopest! ¿Can I recomend a 1960s Ninja anime for the nex episode? Its based on Sanpei Shirsto's manga _Kamui Den_ . There's so much material all over the world except in the US where as far as I know only an episode was released as a bundle with action figure by REMCO under the title "Secret Of The Ninja". A lot of tropes we take for granted in Ninja/Samurai Anime/OVAs came from there.

It was extremely cinematic. He used all the tricks of the best cinematography. Most cartoon directors focus on the animation of the characters, and bringing life to them, which makes sense because most cartoons are funny animal or cartoony, caricatures of people. But anime of this style relies on realistic depictions of people, so you can't have them moving around like Mickey Mouse. So the compositions of the shots, the atmosphere, the pacing, and the editing becomes what's most important.

@@nero3948 Yes, Spirit Detective, there are 2 animated movies (the first of them being the one being reviewed here). They have also been dubbed into English and are extremely good. There is even a 50 episode anime series which came out in 2015, which also has an English dub; HOWEVER, I recommend watching the subbed version instead, since Duke Togo (Golgo 13) Japanese voice actor does the character far more justice. There are also 2 live action versions as well both from the 1970s (fun fact: the second version stars the legendary Sonny Chiba as Golgo 13).

Since we're talking interpretations, have you heard the one about how Duke Togo isn't a real person, but death personified? I mean, he's "real" in the way that Batman is real, but Batman is an ideal to strive for, an role to be embodied, and an archetype that Bruce Wayne becomes to accomplish a purpose. Duke Togo is the same only he became Golgo 13 more fully than BW ever became Batman. He has no emotions, is completely amoral, is unkillable, and only ever needs one bullet because he's mister 100% headshot. Yeah, he f*cks, but there is no indication he gets any pleasure out of it while every woman he's ever laid orgasms, or as the French call it, experiences "le petite morte" or "the little death". Each story is about somebody or some organization trying to cheat death, or avenge death, or double-cross death, and each story ends in the inevitable: death. His logo is a mockery of the resurrection, instead of Jesus back from death, it's DEATH AS JESUS. Golgo is death as a god-human, and his miracles are murderous. What really brought this home for me was when I saw Golgo 13 with his trenchcoat and teardrop sunglasses on. Damn, doesn't that look like the 20th century version of the grim reaper?

But he had a few close calls with death though in this movie and in the series. He clearly was effected by his associate's death ( the one who suped up his car ). And he would never kill children. Or by standers. I think he's a man that is dedicated to what he does just like Batman. For most people work a job in order to live the life they want. But for guys like Duke Togo and Batman. The work they do is the life they want to live. Thus why they're so damn good at what they do.

I agree, also I consider his contracts to be more of a deal with the devil. I really like this take because I can see all the parallels. In the anime it’s stated that he doesn’t believe in any religion. So I thought it was strange in episode 47 or 48 when faced with his newly orphaned illegitimate child he says “may god bless you”. This could quite possibly be him asking his counterpart (God) to bless his son. I just finished the anime show all 50 episodes are pretty fresh in my mind and I don’t recall him saying anything of that nature almost seemed as if this was one of those few times he broke character. In terms of what he says. Also contradicts the fact that he doesn’t believe in anything. Maybe I’m just reading too much into it. His character is meant to be ambiguous so assumptions are the closest this we’ll ever get lol

@@watchforever1724comparing this to Akira is insulting. Watching both of these films, I'm genuinely shocked Akira is a longer film, cause this drags considerably with all of the jumping around it does. Genuinely, the series and the manga feels like a series of jobs ands targets and stories (the way it should). This feels like an entire season of that, but smashed together into the most rushed yet somehow still meandering work yet. Oh my god, and the helicopter CGI scene? Jesus is that terrible. The ending revelation with the suicide note is 100% what saves the film. It's so grounded at times but so ridiculously over the top.. honestly, I don't know how anyone could enjoy any of the character work in this. It's just so much style and so little substance. Like OG Cowboy Bebop, but you hope everyone dies in the end.

But because of eventually learning that there is at least some good to humanity, Ryo learns compassion, a genuine desire to help others (especially the mokkori! inducing women), and all jokes aside, understands that he has the ability to help others that normally wouldn't be able to get it even if those abilities came from a dark period in his life. @@sgt.d.1311 I used to have The Kowloon Assignment on VHS. Golgo was played by Sonny Chiba. It wasn't that cheesy, but Golgo was a little less superhuman. Golgo isn't much like Leon, or at least the film version of Leon. Jean Reno's performance reminded me a little of Ben Affleck's autistic assassin in The Accountant. Duke Togo is a cold blooded killer sex machine; James Bond as a Ronin. Leon is a simple man with simple needs who just happens to kill people. He doesn't even use most of the money he is paid. He quickly develops an emotional weakness for Matilda, something Duke would never do. Jean Reno just happens tp look a little like Golgo.

You realize that just because Trigger warnings didn't exist in the past, doesn't mean that they wouldn't have been useful, right? This is the type of Anime that got me and my friends into anime back in the 90s. It had balls and dared to do what no animated film, since maybe Heavy Metal, would attempt in the US. To a jaded angst ridden teenager in 1995, anime like this was where it was at. Sure it's a shallow male power fantasy, but that's okay as long as you know that's all it is. Fantasy. Bask in the badassery, don't take it too seriously (or seriously at all) and have fun with it.

In my opinion, The Professional is a solid movie from 1983. Especially for an anime movie, its class is ageless. And its very memorable in its own right. 40 years later, it still has yet to be surpassed. And to this day, it remains one of my all time personal favorites.

I love the constant use of "it's like playing Nintendo 64 for the first time," to reference minds being blown. I remember getting Mario 64 and my sister and I being stunned. I also remember being made fun of for watching cartoons in middle school, attending a private school because the public schools were way to fuckin' rowdy. My math teacher was like, "Dude, stick with it. Cartoons are cool when you're a child, then they're not, then they're cool again. Don't change. Stay you." Also, big ups on the punk rock and failing to become a rockatar--I did the same. Really dig this channel. EDIT: Totally neglected to mention the Circle Jerks hoodie is for sure something I might cop, after I score some toys for this thing I'm working on. And, should y'all make it this far, I do sound work and would love to help y'all out for the sake of building a portfolio.

I really like your treatises on these anime’s. These are some of the best collegiate type thesis for this genre. I am wondering, considering your past, how you achieved this level of intelligence you present. I am 68 and have been watching anime since the late 80’s. I am retired musician from philharmonic, but spend a lot of time reading and researching. Ebert even subbed for a film class I took at university. I spend my time now making anime garage kits. I am pretty good artist and have won some medals. I am just finishing work on a Revi statue. Your Black Lagoon piece was great. Anyway, keep up the good work. I just have to watch Golgol 13 now. Stay healthy.

Golgo 13 is one of those characters that are just from it's time, Unfortunately by todays standards especially in America he would be seen in a negative light, But the thing that amazes me the most is how the character is still going after so many years, It feels like Golgo 13 is just the grandfather of anime, Like that anime that everyone can respect just for helping pioneer a genre of badass and masculine protagonist. Along with the the 80s vibe it brings some nostalgia to simpler times. It just sucks that the character isn't getting as much attention as it should, Considering Devilman got a new series.

dude I'm not tryna be combative but I disagree with the foundation of your take. "Fashion is fleeting, style is forever." In other words what makes this good is timeless. There's a reason we're still producing it over half a century later.
