Its funny seeing negative nancies in the comments complaining about this not being Glorfindel, like it was in the book when this was the scene that made me fall in love with The Lord of the Rings in the first place. Its sad, beautiful, terrifying and mythical. Just think of it from Frodo's perspective. All he wanted was just to do the right thing, but now evil is closing in on his friends from all sides. He's has been stabbed. He's been poisoned. He's dying. The end is near... But then an angel appears. She speaks a language he doesn't know. She tells him everything will be alright. There are so many scenes in this trilogy that make me cry without fail, and this was the first one. I would not have wept in the cinema as a kid, if this was some random male Elf. The fact that its the love of Aragorn's life who comes to help him and complete his mission is what *makes* this scene.
@hindsightpov42184 жыл бұрын
Glorfindel comes and goes quickly in the books. He barely makes an impression in the story. You can get away with a sweeping character like that on the page, but it would not translate on the screen. Even in the Ralph Bakshi animated film of Lord of the Rings, they replaced Glorfindel with Legolas in this scene. To have Arwen come to Frodo’s rescue and bring him to Rivendell, her home, to be healed by her father, Elrond, it made a lot more sense.

For me glorfindel would be better. We see enough of Arwen already, I'd like to see Glorfindel. In the book, Glorfindel arrives and meanwhile Arwen is in Lothlorien. I think this is ridiculous, they only show her because she is Aragorn's lover. Likewise, they show less of Legolas' scenes just for this reason. So they skipped Legolas' scenes in Lothlorien and his conversation with Frodo. Still my best and favorite movie series

In the books, it was Glorfindel the one who came in aid of Frodo, not Arwen. And since Frodo was able now to see the “unseen”, he saw the true form of Glorfindel, the had the Ligh of Valinor. But because Peter Jackson didn't add Glorfindel to the movies, he put some of the aspects of Glorfindel into Arwen (the light that Frodo can see) to build the relationship between Aragorn and Arwen. I'm still waiting on a movie or series in which we get a proper introduction to Glorfindel. Like when the Witch King flee once he saw Glorfindel, or watch him fight with a Balrog.

I agree with you. There is really a big problem in the books in terms of the development of the love story between Aragorn and Arwen. I read the book for the first time in 2000. When Aragorn got married with Arwen, I basically had no idea who Arwen was. Last year I downloaded a PDF copy of the books and found out that she is almost not mentioned after the Council of Elrond episode. When the movies were released, I was not happy to see Arwen carrying Frodo to Rivendel. However, Lyv Tyler did a perfect job. She is beautiful, feminine, wise and brave. She even spoke in Elvish to the fans a few times. She is the opposite to Morfydd Clark portrayal of Galadriel.
