In the book, she wasn't there. Frodo defies the Nazgul on his own at the Ford. But although she only appears a few times in the book, she's a nice person. In Minas Tirith, after the coronation and her marriage to Aragorn, she gave Frodo her white jewel for healing and comfort as she sensed he was suffering spiritually from having carried the Ring. And she gave him her place on the ship to the Undying Lands. :)

The fellowship of the Ring is the most artistic and cinematographic movie from the trilogy. It's amazing. It was recorded in a different way, it's more artistic, the photography, the lighting, the camera movements, some slow motion moments. There's that scene in the forest when the Hobbits are picking mushrooms and Frodo looks at the road and it seems to increase and decrease at the same time. It's a camera capture technique in which the camera zooms in and moves backwards, creating a feeling of danger and terror, incredible. Anyway, there are many other scenes where I could highlight the different cinematographic techniques used in the film

Sam is such an underrated character and never gets the credit he deserves. Not many people, nevermind hobbits, would charge the Nazgûl in a fight like he did. Most people think Hobbits are weak, but Sam stands his ground where some would’ve run. ❤
@philippalinton5850Ай бұрын
I didn't mind Peter Jackson making Sam, Merry and Pippin braver at Weathertop than they were in the book. In the book, they were too scared to move. It's Book Frodo who lashes out at the Witch King with his little sword from the Barrow Downs, slicing through the WiKi's robe, and calling on the Vala Elbereth as he does so - which freaks the Nazgul out. Sam is not underrated - he was already a much loved character long before the films came out. And he gets full credit for his heroism in the book. Aragorn honours him and Frodo on the Field of Cormallen, placing them on his throne. Frodo makes sure Rosie knows Sam is a hero when they return to the Shire. Sam is instrumental, along with Merry and Pippin, in fighting against Saruman's ruffians in the Scouring of the Shire. Frodo makes Sam his heir, leaving Bag End to him and Rosie. Sam becomes Mayor of the Shire seven times! And eventually sails West, when he's an old hobbit, after Rosie has died.

It's certainly a great cinema scene. In the book, it's Elrond's power that raises the River (he's the keeper of the Ring of Air). He causes the white water horses, and Gandalf uses his magic to add some riders to them too. Arwen isn't there - it was Glorfindel who was sent by Elrond to find Aragorn and the hobbits in the wild, and Frodo rides his horse Asfaloth to the Ford, where he defies the Nazgul on his own. I didn't mind Arwen having a bigger role in the films, but Frodo was robbed of his courage in this scene - and in other scenes, too, sadly.

@@philippalinton5850 Honestly, I'm quite content with Frodo's changes in the film. As much Frodo loved Bilbo and the idea of adventure, Elijah Wood gave him a much more gentle and vulnerable demeanour. This makes his rare moments of fury and violence more impactful, as we know that isn't the Frodo whom we know. This actually ties in to the very end of the books, as Frodo never even drew Sting from its scabbard during the liberation of the Shire.

They had to give Glorfindel's role to Arwen because, in the novel, her only real accomplishment was embroidering a banner for Aragorn's herald to carry. This is why I don't agree with those who compare Aragorn and Arwen to Beren and Luthien. Luthien actually went on the epic quest to steal a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown, and she was badass about it. Thus demonstrating her power and agency. Arwen was never anything more than Aragorn's motivation and prize.

I agree that Luthien is awesome. Book Arwen is a nice person though. Gave Frodo her white jewel and her place on the ship. I didn't mind her replacing Glorfindel. It's the weakening of Frodo's character that annoys me - not just in this scene, but throughout the films.
@daniels7907Ай бұрын
@@philippalinton5850 - I don't consider giving Frodo her place on that particular ship to have been a huge gift. It's not like she couldn't have taken another one later. That's exactly how it was with her grandparents. Galadriel left on the ship with Frodo, Gandalf, and Elrond. Celeborn would not sail until years later. Legolas and Gimli sailed when Aragorn died. She could have hitched a ride with them. Because Tolkien was still tinkering with the lore that his son would later compile into the Silmarillion, he forgot the small detail of not having provided any satisfactory explanation for why Arwen would need to become mortal in order to marry Aragorn. Or why the Valar would even allow this given that she had lived nearly three millennia as an Elf and had thus arguably already made her choice early in the Third Age. Her father and uncle had to make their choices pretty early in their lives.
@Roheryn100Ай бұрын
@@daniels7907She could not “hitch a ride” later. Her choice to stay with Aragorn and renounce an immortal ife was irrevocable . These aren’t things you can change your mind about. Elves don’t break their word. It’s not a “small detail” that the age of the Elves would pass with the destruction of The One Ring. The elven rings lost their power as well. Tolkien made this clear. That is why most elves left , although a few lingered for a while out of affection , like Legolas. But they all eventually left.
@daniels7907Ай бұрын
@@Roheryn100 - You see, this is the problem, Tolkien himself treated Arwen as such a background character that at *NO* point did she actually make the choice before the Valar! Nor did he bother to explain why an Elf marrying a Man has to make the choice, especially since Arwen is not even close to being Half-Elven. Legolas and Gimli left the exact same year that Aragorn died! So there is also no valid claim that Arwen couldn't have left with them, or any of the other departing Elves. Nobody said that the Straight Road had been closed to the Elves just because a king of Men had died. The Valar really wanted the Elves to leave Middle-earth and weren't trying to stop them from doing so nor setting a deadline. This is a reflection of Tolkien's rather creepy idea that if a husband dies then his wife ought to do so as well. Despite his own religion rejecting this idea.

@@marsbar2020 Yeah, especially when one of the main characters is attracted to her; she needed a tad more depth and involvement. If Glorfindel showed up for only one scene and vanished since then, it would be very jarring to a lot of people and raise questions (such as why not have Glorfindel join the Fellowship?). Omitting Tom Bombadil was the right choice; even if it took away from the Witch-king prophecy, I feel like he would drag the movie out and, once again, force people to ask questions (why not have Tom Bombadil take the Ring to Mt. Doom, etc.). I'm sure that everyone who's read the books would have answers for all those questions, but cinematically, they really wouldn't pan out.

It was a smart idea to replace Glorfindel with her. Arwen in the books is a bit of a do-nothing character, and Glorfindel appears in this one scene and then never again. Glorfindel's only major contribution in the books is this. Everything else is off-screen. More, Glorfindel's absurd power doesn't fit the film, where the "good guys", for lack of a better term, are always outmatched. The Nazgul taking one look at Glorfindel and promptly running away doesn't match that. Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen makes sense. It gives her character extra depth beyond her relationships with her father and Aragorn, showing that she's a badass in her own right, not just the princess waiting in Rivendell.

@@Cailus3542 - Even though she didn't really summon the flood. Her father Elrond sent it, with Gandalf adding the horses as a dramatic flourish.

Actually no. Frodo rides alone.

@@Cailus3542 I agree that Arwen's role needed to be expanded somehow, and I don't really mind her replacing Glorfindel, for the reasons you state. But I regret that Peter Jackson made Frodo so weak in this scene, and in the films generally. Poor Film Frodo isn't even allowed to whisper defiance at the Ford.

the horse rode frodo not glorfindel and elrond sent the flood.

Movie Arwen has magical powers. In the book, it's Elrond's power that raises the River. She wasn't there in the book, Frodo defies the Nazgul on his own at the Ford.
