How to hide silver solder on copper. This video will show you how to copper plate your work so you can hide your solder lines or add detail to other metals. If you're looking for the tools and materials that I use, you can find them all on my Amazon list amzn.to/2UmTad4 *If you buy any of the tools or materials from my list I will make a small commission at no extra charge to you and it helps support the channel*

@@GomeowCreations Question: You didn't give any volumes, as in vinegar, copper and salt by weight. Does it matter? Or, do you just want blue water with "some" salt? Also, is the baking soda absolutely necessary? Question: I didn't use silver solder, but I did try the steel wool method on other solder and it's not working. Copper plated the steel wool, but not the solder. Is it because it's not silver, or because It's not the electric version? (only charging cord that I don't use is a solid core, no red or black wires)
@GomeowCreations

It should work on what ever solder you used. Try pulling the steal wool apart a bit and wrapping it around the part that has so solder. You can also use the steal wool as a brush and apply the copper solution directly to the parts you need.

Did you try the steel wool method, but without the steel wool? My guess (I might be wrong) that it's not necessary. The copper ions from solution will switch places with more reactive metal (like iron) on the part surface. Well silver solder consists mostly of silver, which is less reactive than copper, but also of other metals like zinc, tin or lead, all of these are more reactive, so by my guess the piece of silver solder will turn red after simply being immersed in the copper salt solution. It will work better with the easy solder as it contains less silver. The electroplating just makes that process faster and makes it possible to plate even less reactive metals like silver, gold or platinum. But what's the purpose of the steel wool in this? Except for just wasting a bunch of copper solution. I don't have copper salt on my hands right now so I can't try, but if you did that that would be nice, I would really like to be proven wrong. Thank you for the video.

To keep the bar waterproof, the seams between the copper sheets have to be soldered with lead-free solder (non-toxic). @anthonywarnecke8260

My general work area is not only mine, my entire family has access to it and they can be pretty clumsy and have knocked over my pieces before, even my stuff i have on my shelves or tucked back where they _should_ be out of the way. add into that that them letting kids go out there and play and it's just a mess. So if you do this with an off brand apple style cellphone charger (or other unknown charger), make sure you use a GFCI outlet, some of the cheaper brands have an unfortunate design flaw which may make one of the low voltage wires actually connected to the 120v AC hot wire of your electrical outlet (ungrounded conductor)... it's a nasty shock if you complete the circuit to ground with your body. To avoid this be sure to use an original apple charger 😉

I have found you can often hide a joint with a burnisher too

@HouseholdDog
@HouseholdDog 5 жыл бұрын
@@GomeowCreations If you lightly sand along the joint with 400 grit sandpaper then rub across the joint, with a burnisher, it tends to hide the joint. The original metal seems to fold over the top of the solder joint. Which hides it. I am just a beginner and started making a chain. I found this method worked pretty well on the joints.

If you noticed the black residue flaking off the plated "cup" that is due to the nature of the pickleing solution. Distilled vinegar is actually a solution of acetic acid. Acetic acid is an organic acid containing carbon (C2H4O2), and it's the carbon causing the residue. For better experience with copper electroplating results I suggest dissolving your copper sulphate (CuSO4) in a dilute solution of sulphuric acid (H2SO4), because sulphuric acid contains no carbon atoms. btw, the bubbles released during electroplating are bubbles of hydrogen gas (H2).

Put a small amount of pickle in a container with an iron nail then put the item with the solder to be copperplates in the the container, in about 5 minutes your solder will be copper. DO NOT use this pickle to clean silver as it will end up copper. If this happens make up what is called a super pickle.

@@GomeowCreations colour and melting temp depend of the brand and compozition....you just need to experiment. Next time try higher curents and dont hang it in one place it has to be agitated and plating proces should be from 10sec to a 1 min.....1.2A LED strip transformer works well for me.

Yes it is oddly pronounced and it threw me and irritated me to the point i thought as an english person i would try to help by pointing the mistake out. Didn't mean to offend. It was an observation.
