I loved Jim Nabors playing Gomer Pyle when I was a kid, because it was so hopelessly goofy! As an adult, I admire Jim Nabors for his portrayal. I don't know enough about who Nabors really was - wasn't he a self-trained entertainer? At any rate, he wasn't Gomer Pyle - but whoever he really was, he was big enough to let the joke be on him. Sure, the show is Life In The Marine Corps As It Never Was (my husband was at Parris Island in 1966) but it was a lot of light-hearted, innocent '60's style laughs.
