My Dad got the biggest kick out of this TV show. He was a WWII vet. Our family watched this show together. Life was alot simpler back then with three TV stations. No remote control and we had a black and white tv set. I think this show was on Friday nights. Those were the days. R.I.P. Dad.

something I hear about this TV show intro. The marines marching next to gomer were real marines, most of them went on to fight in Vietnam, many did not come home. When this show went into syndication, Jim neighbors wanted to change the intro , and remove the marines, the parents of those marines fought to keep the original intro saying "I like seeing my son march again"
@aliciaswofford9897 жыл бұрын
I remember that too. Jim Nabors said he couldn't bear to watch the intro because of the men lost in the war.

Another thing is, if you compare the first season intro (black and white) to the second season intro (color): the 2nd season is carefully restaged and reshot (on color film) ..... They clearly attempted to almost precisely duplicate it (as if just the color was magically turned on), but It's interesting to note the differences....

From about 1:26 to 1:30,the American flag shown is a 49 star,somewhat rare,and unknown to most people. Surprising since the show premiered in 1964,and the 49 star flag was official only 1959-1960,it could have been stock footage,or just the flag the studio had on hand to film the scene.
@cspann8316 жыл бұрын
How astute of you- I also noticed this in a rerun on TV. Had to find it on youtube to verify my suspicions. I was born in the period between July 4 1959 when the star for Alaska was added and July 4 1960 when Hawaii was added. I look for these things nowadays. Couldn't tell you when the footage was filmed but the geometry of the stars on the flags canton is obvious.
@jbtravelssolo75962 жыл бұрын
fun fact alot of tv shows and businesses will use flags with 1 less star in the flags to avoid certain laws and rules of their use a good example of this is disney world all of the flags on the buildings are missing a star or are altered slightly so they are not technically considered USA flags

Something to note this is the only episode to my knowledge that was not filmed at the back lot where Andy Griffith was filmed all the other episodes were filmed in the back lot. This episode was actually filmed on a Marine corps base with real Marines and the barber shop scene is a real Marine corps Barber shop. The drill sergeant marching at the beginning intro you see him for a split second is a real Marine corps drill sergeant and if you look hard enough on Google you can see his picture with Frank Sutton and Jim nabors. The obstacle course and base was all filmed in San Diego.
@kevinhealey65402 жыл бұрын
Frank Sutton, (Sgt Carter) actually was in the army and was in combat in WW 2 and was wounded. Made Sgt. He was married only once and stayed married which is very rare for his occupation. He wasn't gruff like the character he played. From everything I seen on the internet about him he was a real nice guy.

What I don't understand is I have read that episode 1 was actually aired as the last episode of season 4 of the Andy Griffith Show.... if you watch that episode under Andy Griffith Show, it starts out in Mayberry, and moves to the base.... This must be from the first episode under Gomer Pyle USMC (which would really be the 2nd overall episode?)

Man, it's sad to think that this show was really popular but was cancelled just because the executives were tired of marketing to rural people.
@robertorick63835 ай бұрын
Actually, the show was cancelled in 1969 two years before the CBS "rural plague". Jim Nabors was tired of playing Gomer Pyle and wanted to do a comedy/musical variety show, which he got by CBS, even though he had to deal with CBS executives over having Frank Sutton as a supporting guest on the show because Frank and Jim were close friends in real life. "The Jim Nabors Hour" lasted for two years, before being cancelled by CBS and their 'rural plague."
Wow - I just thought about Homer's Pyle for the first time in years, a week or two ago. It was a widespread joke at the time. What's brown and sits out behind the barracks?

I wonder if his castmates and the people who produced, directed, and were otherwise involved with the show knew Jim Nabors was gay? Back in '64, that was about the worst thing a person could be, and if he'd been a real Marine and had his fellow Marines knew it, he'd have been beaten to a bloody pulp.

@bobbycv642 жыл бұрын
@@beavercleaver7848 When I was in boot camp most of the guys were from Texas and they keep bragging how big Texas was. We only had one Alaskan and he said, "Did you ever hear about the 1964 Earthquake in Alaska?" The Texans said, "No and we don't care" The Alaskan said, "well you better care because that Earthquake was so massive and almost split Alaska in half and Texas would be the 3rd largest state in the Union" You want to see something, look up the counties in the Alaska and their massive sizes. The largest county is 319,852 sq mi compared to the entire state of Texas 268,597 sq mi - think of that. Just try and get a working permit, drivers license, etc. LOL
