This is the first time I have seen the inside of one of these engines. Do you want to laugh? Unless the 2005 engines had timing belts, instead of timing chains, I don't think I'll bring the car in for that work. 2:19
@hadial-saadoon21142 жыл бұрын
The timing chains (there are more than one) on these engines and the VR6s that preceded them require the separation of the engine and transmissions in order to replace the chains and guides. On the VW Phaetons, both the W8s and the W12s, this required removing the entire drivetrain assembly forward of the rear driveshaft to do so. I worked at a VW dealership as a tech for 12 years, and fortunately I never had to perform this work on the Phaetons, but I definitely cursed my luck when I'd draw that job on the VR6 Golfs, Jettas and Eurovans. Special tools are mandatory to do this work on any of these engines.

I blame the Germans and their affinity for specialized things. [These guys in the video are behind the curve believe it or not, in spite of copying so much: they don't have a dedicated robotic machine for crankshaft placement/install]. Not a garage mechanic in the world can afford the tools modern assembly lines have: it would take over square footage the size of a Walmart, with only room for 4 cars at a time for maintenance. They'd start charging admission fees like a hospital or a university, before one second of real work is performed to your benefit. Still, I wouldn't mind playing with one of these w12 engines if it was thrown my way. The heads are so huge... even an old 1950 Desoto might be pressed for space trying to squeeze this in.

@@finnrattrie2015 stock power wise, no 2jz gte on earth was ever the most powerful engine. Even when you spend 10-20k on it, there are cars coming out of the factory that will leave Supra owners wondering if they made the right investment.

its almost as complex as an aircraft engine...probably costs about the same to maintain and repair too.

Nothing drives home the quality like tightening rod bearings with a cheap electric drill and scuffing cam lugs with chrome alloy. 👍🙏💯🇬🇧

James Poteat has anybody seen my spectacles ? What about trying to diagnose a strange noise if somebody had put a piston in half a turn out. I saw the aftermath of somebody fitting six BMW pistons in the wrong way.

It is, of course, a double Volkswagen VR-6 engine. The VR-6 was developed as a compact powerhouse for the Golf to make an even quicker GTI. Then a genius at Volkswagen came up with the idea that combining two compact V-6 engines with a common crankshaft would make a medium-sized blockbuster engine. Bentley (by then Volkswagen owned) proved to be an ideal platform for this W-12.
