I would consider a 2" receiver on front of tow vehicle .Then you can use bike rack on front ,then can move to back after setting up camp to get to trails. Had on three of my trucks . Also have used to connect up to trailer and push it into tight spots. Have a Great 2022. Thank's for all your post !

Rick had similar rack on my cargo conversion and due to jacking of trailer rear it ejected my bike which weighed far less than your bikes. It was due to the flexing of each side arm down and up when trailer rear jacks up and down. Thank goodness I secured the wheels to the rack and didn't destroy my whole bike. Also, ebikes are susceptible to water from rain and can ruin the bike electrics, even with battery removed. Caution Will Robinson!

That's what I normally do... use some washers or wider sections of steel to attenuate the forces out over a larger space. There's going to be a lot of oscillation and harmonics of the vibrations created by this rack. It'd be a good idea for him to go ahead and add that before he drives it very far. I'd also tie off or at least bungee the bikes to that center post to reduce oscillation of the bikes on the rack.

Great solution Rick...............Tips for consideration: Moving the heavier bike in front of the lighter bike will decrease the leverage effect and increase the tongue weight...also a wide web trucking strap over the top of the trailer (not sure about power vent location - may have to run 2 webs around both sides to meet in the middle) and pulling straight up on that bike rack eye would minimize the bouncing. I find that trying to lift with side angling straps doesn't provide the support required. A direct opposite positive pull against the direction of negative movement is required to stabilize it.

Hi Youse two🙋♀️❤🇨🇦‼️ I got my EB70! WHOOHOO‼️ I has bought a older Swagman bike rack, 2nd hand, then bought a crazy expensive tongue rack(Arvika)(highly recommend), but sold that with our last trailer, but have the Swagman still and hubby travels 60 miles/each way regularily to check on his brother, so takes his bike and LOVES the Swagman, I took it down to the Trailer Hitch Shop and they welded 2 2" pcs on top of each other, and it lifts the bikerack up 2 more inches. We have a steep driveway and a lot of people bottom out on it, so I figured to do that and hubby is well pleased! Just gives us that bit more peace of mind. NOW I have been plotting some more..hubby got himself a custom bicycle built, and he bought a real fancy lock for his 'Precious'😆 and I took advantage of the moment and said: you know..I've been looking at a very special lock for our expensive trailer we are getting..we don't want it stolen, it's called Proven Locks. He said yes!!! Caught him at the right moment in time😍😆 but Ima gonna cinch the deal and show him that GONAGAIN use Proven Locks too!!! Yet another item off the GONAGAIN SHOPPING MUST HAVES‼️😁👍🏆😄🚲🚲

The bike rack think looks like an idea worth trying. 6:19 looking at this makes me think 'backing plate' to distribute the force of the bolts. If you have a small remote camera, you can position it and do some test drives to see how things behave. Also, you might want to put some thread locker on those bolts securing the hitch to the trailer.

A little more armchair engineering here! As a fellow aluminum frame trailer owner, I try to put a barrier between unlike metals. A thin rubber gasket between the trailer frame and the hitch (pond liner?) will reduce corrosion problems, especially when you get salt spray in there from the winter roads. I agree with others too, a steel flat bar across the top of the threshold is a great idea. Thanks for sharing your projects Rick, they get the wheels turning.

If you have enough tongue weight so you can't pick it up... You don't have any problem with too much weight on the back or not enough weight on the front. The "frame" is the entire metal frame for the trailer. You drilled holes and mounted your hitch & rack to the "cross members" of the frame. I have an old hitch receiver I think could just be mounted right up to the cross members on your trailer's frame. I bought and mounted it on my `83 Ford Ranger P/U. I took it, and the overload springs I'd also added, off my truck before I sold the truck. I still have them all here.

So I had a similar situation regarding the bouncing issue. Although mine a bit different as I had a Harbor Freight basket with a generator and cooler mounted on my truck camper. As I was watching I was thinking what you could do, but you had a solution. But here’s what I did on my basket, I bolted a chain to the basket and inserted eye bolts to the rear bumper of the truck camper which kept it tight. I was thinking with your center eye bolt you could run straight up to the center and above your ramp door. Regardless how you do it, your ultimate goal is no bounce. Happy Trails !

Rick, you may want to determine the actual weight you have placed on you wheel bearings. I had to do that on a MH we owned when I placed a medium size dirt bike on the rear. It will be interesting to see how it works out for you! My thoughts... For a 2 inch reciever with no flex and security. . Use a piece of heavy 2 inch steel tubing that's the full length of the trailer frame. Weld on angle iron ears at the proper attachment points. You had to visit the welder anyway. I think you will run into some sway issues due to the extra weight being so far behind the wheels. Ask me how I know this. :-) You may have to add some ballast to the front of the trailer. At 94.6 pounds per gallon, lead would be a good option. Ultimately... This is where a truck with a tall topper really shines.. lots of space to stow gear, extra fuel, spare tires, & the Rokon. Thanks for the video...

I think the hitch is okay but the bike rack doesn’t look beefy enough to go off-road and it’s probably too close to the ground. You might need to raise the trailer a few inches for more clearance.
@jimv.6613 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the addition of an iron strip under the carriage bolts would toughen it up a bit and changing the nuts to the nylon locking type along with the lock washers would be a good idea. Reminds me of years ago when I had a rack built to attach to the back of my bike (chopper) so as to carry more on road trips. After loading I took off girlfriend on the back, bike loaded for everything we'd need. I only went about a block and turned around to unload half. The front end of the bike kept coming off the ground with each bump making it a Harley unicycle.
@jwagnermail3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm also worried about the long term strength of that aluminum cross member. I think as the bikes flex the mount from bounces, the aluminum will slowly distort. It probably will not destructively fail, but will slowly add a curve to the cross member. I think the final solution will be to replace the cross member with a heavy gauge steel box tube. That will be another video! And I also worry that the weight removed from the tongue can cause stability issues. There are plenty of YT videos that show what happens when the tongue weight is too light. Look for videos that show how to use a 2x4 to measure tongue weight, it should be somewhere between 9 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight .

@@gonagain or... you could just modify the bike rack where it meets the receiver with a "step up" adapter to raise just the bike rack higher without raising the trailer higher. You might also think about mounting some lights on the back of your bike rack so people can see you better at night. Less chance of anyone rear ending you because it was optically illusioned for them judging the distance in the dark and not clearly seeing the rack or the bikes. (They sell a pretty nice set with wiring at Harbor Freight.) At a bare minimum, I'd put on some red and white reflector tape on the back of the rack so people can see it better and better judge their distance to stop. Looks good. I have a nice double bike rack but need a mountain bike. The old road bike just wouldn't cut it out in the dessert. If you notice any fatigue at the bolt points, there are carriage bolt backing washers for the heads of the bolts with squares stamped into them. It you notice crush in your aluminim frame, you could fit 12" of 2 inch x 1/8" angle or C channel aluminum or whatever fits best and bolt through that and a couple either self tappers on one side or a through bolt over your frame to reinforce it. It would be nice if you had a couple bolts in a shear position on the back wall, unless I missed you doing that. 200 pounds static weight is one thing, driving down a trail on one of your adventures is another. Watching the power lines blowing in the high winds outside your house reminded me of my time in school in NW Oklahoma. The rest of Oklahoma is in the banana belt by comparison but it gets just has hot or hotter when summer roles around. I'm thinking as others here that it would be wise to put a two foot long strip of steel in that slot with the bolt tops. Also, is that a hinge in the strut sticking out from the hitch. If it is, can you tilt the bikes in toward the trailer? That would move the center of gravity toward the front too.

It held up fine until I put a heavier dirt bike on the rack that weighed twice as much. It would still be ok for hauling an ebike.

You may need a counterweight in the front of the trailer like water or something you can use on the road. Keep us informed 🤔

Good Morning, My only concern is the small head of the carriage bolt pulling thru the top of the back rail. Is there room to put 1/4" plate across the 4 bolts on top? Just a thought from another DIY'er Great job!

I'll keep an eye on that. Thank you for your suggestion!

Is that the weight of the bike with the battery on it or, dry weight without the battery on the bike?
@gonagain3 жыл бұрын
That's the weight with the battery, but we'll remove those while they're in the rack.

Love the video as usual. I'm thinking about getting an E bike but I can't decide which one. How well do you like the Himaway?
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
I like Himiway a lot. The first of the year they brought out some newer designs that look very good and their quality is top notch.

Hi Rick..do you need to cover the bikes with something..so rain doesn’t damage the electronic controllers?
@gonagain3 жыл бұрын
From what I've been reading, nothing holds up to the wind back there and people are just leaving them in the open with the battery removed. I'm about to find out because we're heading south pretty soon and I'll talk about it in the future.

Amazon sells a 2" hitch stabilizer that I used to keep hitch tight. KZbin does not want to have a link posted by me so you are on your own to find it, LOL! How is the knees doing now? Getting stronger? Or are you telling Linda a lie to keep her quiet? 😁
@gonagain3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip on the hitch stabilizer. My knee is the same, but I'm ok as long as I don't overextend it so that the torn meniscus overlaps on itself. I'm getting better at making it go back into position though, I can do it standing up without falling to the ground now!

@@gonagain I've had surgery on both knees. Not knee replacements. Must be careful to not overload the knee. Old dogs can learn new tricks when they must. Thanks God for whoever invented anything to make life easier for broken bodies. 😄

Rick, do you have the link to the hitch you used in the video?
@gonagain3 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeff, I added it below the video. It's from Northern Tool.

After a year or so, how has this held up? I looked for a way to email you but, was unsuccessful. Any info you could provide would be great. I am about to try the same thing.

drilling up like that it makes shavings fall into your sleeve. don't ask how know i just know it. i just put a carrier on the back of my trailer but its for a moped. the weight is about the same 190 for mine. but my trailer is steel and the back doors are steel. its an old horse trailer made to contain a kicking horse. the steel doors are strong enough. i bolted the carried to the doors. i am not worried about weight or maybe i should be. my truck is a F250 diesel. looking good there dude. by the way your wife is kinda tall my wife is asian and she is 4'10"

I'll tell Linda how tall your wife is and that will make her feel grown up! Thanks for watching, Bob.

Great Video. How did it work out the bike Rack and tongue weight? Do you have a link to the hitch and bike rack by chance?
@gonagain Жыл бұрын
The bike rack didn't affect the tongue very much, but I have a lot of weight at the front of the trailer that compensates it. I don't have a link to the hitch and I don't remember where I got it, but it must not have been from Amazon because I don't see it in my past orders. The bike rack didn't work out and started sagging and bending right away, so I went to an inexpensive motor rack from Harbor Freight. My wife gave up her ebike for medical reasons, so I only carry one now.

I have a harbor freight and you may try doing it on tongue. Check out KZbin for videos

We've had that rack for a few years, it works well for our fat bikes, its pretty cheap too! How has that held up?
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
It's working fine and I use it on my car also to get to different riding locations. The problem is that this particular rack with it 's low cost can't be found any longer. The newer ones that are just like it now cost a lot more.
