Cosmic Campground, NM, on Dark Sky Road, is where we begin this video. It's one of a few places in the US with the darkest night skies, making it popular with astronomers. Then we remote camp in the Coconino National Forest on a beautiful forest service road and find some amazing places to camp.

I was in the Navy. You cannot describe the night sky at sea away from all the lights. The immensity of the sky made me feel small. It went on forever. I miss seeing that and also the bioluminescence of the water as the ship slipped along the surface. Seeing those skies, you can understand why the ancient civilizations focused so much on astrology. Thank you Rick and Linda.

@@gonagain It is amazing what you and Linda did in your youth with the sail boat restoration and the learning about survival and navigation... and you're both still at it. If everyone could live like you two it would be an amazing world. The sailing is too adventurous for me but I would love to settle down to some desert exploration and camping. Maybe some day. Like everything else and everybody else except you two... maybe someday. You don't need to answer but do you think a documentary about how you and Linda lived your lives would be interesting and a guiding light to others. I would watch it for sure and I would want all young people to watch it. Again you don't need to answer but have you ever watched a documentary "Holes in my shoes." It was about Jack Beers. Please give it a watch. I bought it years ago and leant it to everyone I knew and they loved it. I mention that because it was a very informal documentary style (done by Jack Beers" neighbor) that was very effective. I feel like everyone should know who Jack Beers was.

The fantail of the USS California (CGN-36) after midwatch was my cooldown before showering and hitting the rack. Every Navy Nuke who went through NRF in Idaho knows about submarine races. Usually along the Snake or Salmon rivers. Greenbank, WV isn't too bad for night skies either.

Thanks for taking us along Rick/Linda! I LOVE Arizona! Like you, I have a lot of family there and lived there for a bit when I was young. For those who've never heard the expression, "Going to watch the submarine races" usually referred to going somewhere secluded (ie a body of water like a lake) to make out or fool around. The more you know...

We have been all over out west, south, north and east. And even Mauna Kea. We have never seen the stars as clear or as many than when we went up to Big Bay, Michigan to try to see the Northern Lights on Lake Superior in April. It was like you said. Zillions . But not just a flat sky with speckles. You could actually see the sky in 3D. It was amazing and just as good as the Aurora!

Hey guys glad to see a new video. The night sky used to be so beautiful. When I was a kid the sky looked crusted with stars. Now there is so much lighting you can barely recognize the Big Dipper. That plant with the spiny leaves is probably a Yucca. It has creamy white bloom spikes about late July or August.

YOU! You... you. It was BECAUSE of your last vid that I pushed forward my timeline to acquire a camera drone. YOOOOOOOUUUUU... (lol). I bought the greater-capacity batteries option, I live near an airport, dji adds another layer of flight restrictions due to the pressure they're seeing from gov't... YOOOUUU... I've nary a brain cell left! after all these goshdanged ho0ps I've been jumping through just to practice hovering and manuvering with a 12' airspace cube directly in front of me let alone! fly the danged thing. But! I have my drone, now, and if I'm lucky and have clicked all the right boxes (Recreational FAA Reg, TRUST Cert, ALOFT apps + the dji tomfoolery) I might get it off the ground later this morning! /phew That said... on with your latest, this newest Friday episode! "...cool wind in my hair..." What's left of it, anyway. I'm gettin' old... HEY! Goffs, CA has is a new designated dark sky area, specifically the HQ for the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association, formerly known as Friends of the Mojave Road. If you ever make it that far west you could tour the Road from Ft Mojave on the river heading westward across USFS BLM, the Mojave Preserve, then more USFS BLM, then ending near good ol' Barstow on the 15/40 split.

Thank you for mentioning that the Forest Service in Montana is quietly closing roads. I just returned from a week in western Montana and I had that feeling. With BLM closing roads in Utah, and new National Monuments grabbing a million acres here and a million acres there, I’m seeing a trend to keep the public off our land. I don’t like it.
