Hi, Gabby! I loved this class. I'm from Brazil, and the first example wouldn't be a mistake for us. In portuguese, the example would be right. The plural only would be used if the sentence was "There are errors in spoken English." In the given example, if was portuguese, "a lot" is singular. So, it should take "is". Thanks for your explanation. I'll pay attention on this details.

This is a little poem, coming from a postcard sent from England to my Grandmother in Sweden around 1912 - 14. It was when I read this poem the first time I came to realize the meaning of the use of 'were' in situations where I, as many others, thought 'was' was correct. I wish I were a china cup in which you drink your tea 'Cause then I knew at every sup You would give a kiss to me. 💌☕ (IF there are any Swedes here, in this case "were" is the same as Swedish "vore", not "var". Ironically we do exactly the same mistake in Swedish! 😂)

I can't recall the improper subjevt-verb agreement (there's vs. there are) as often, or at all, some 30 years ago. Today, I hear it constantly in news broadcasts and interviews. Maybe it's a more "recent" development? Thanks for the tips, they're great for native speakers too.

@@damianponce3432, "Practice make perfect" as they say 😀. Read a lot, books, magazines, comic books. Read out loud, that will give the brain a kick from both sight, ears and the mouth. The more simultaneous input, the better effect. Take the oppertunity to practice your pronunciation and record yourself with the cell phone and listen. It's awful to listen, I know, but very useful. 🎧🎤📖📰

The way we speak and write English, in this case, differ as they always have been. The long historical journey of the two forms have been changed dramatically; the reason for this cannot be labelled easy(ly) if we assume us(ourselves) lazy or we are getting faster with the changing world everyday. Whatever might be the causes that made us use a language which we feel comfortable with and that drives us not to use THE before Ukraine nowadays and it's now idiomatic. We feel comfort when we say, 'there's a lot of people... etc' we do not seem to struggle with the language, but it's a crime not to maintain stricter, and never MORE Strict, when it comes to writing and that soothes the rich taste of English language. Adjectives are appropriate to use as adverbs in poems and I personally don't find it uncomfortable when we use similar idea punched into spoken English too. But we mustn't cramp our style anyway exaggerating the use of language while speaking or writing. Sometimes objective cases of personal pronouns are not punishable when it comes naturally, may not be grammatically enough, to be used as subjects in spoken English and you don't have solid reasons not to be easy with them. Yes, it's true sometimes we tend to become a little more showy by writing long sentences and losing what we actually mean by using dangling clauses or we often even write fragments in getting too little time to keep our eyes open for the kinds of mistakes. It's a long debatable issue to have been discussed in a more detailed and informative conversation, I have just scratched the surface and would like more on this.

It's interesting that to use adjectives instead of adverbs improperly is getting very common in spoken Japanese, too, and that's, I guess, because adjectives are generally easier to pronounce in Japanese language, too! Articles are difficult. Use of "the" before a proper name seems to be decided depending on the proper mame, such as Time magazine (not "the Time"), the Atlantic (not Atlantic magazine), etc. Am I wrong?

I think mistake "There IS a lot of errors" is coused of using word "lot". I thought it is a singular, that's why I should use "is". It is looked like my native language "Имеется множество ошибок", where use singular. Now, I'll speak right. Thank you!

I have heard that about « if a were » or if I was » you have to take were if you are talking about something that is impossible (ex: if I were you) and take was when it is plausible (ex: if I was hungry, I would eat...). Is it correct ? About the comparatives, I have heard that you have to add « er » at the end of a 1-syllable word only...?

I think you are absolutely right. There are some verbs, like "feel," "look" and "appear" that are followed by adjectives and not adverbs. But "appear" has different meanings so it depends. When it's used to indicate a look, for example, She appeared sad yesterday, then it's followed by an adjective. Good call, btw. I knew that, but I wouldn't have caught it if you hadn't mentioned it.

Hello Gaby. Could you please explain why sometimes native speakers use "ish" at the end of some words like doing a little pause between the word and the "ish". I've thought this is some kind of joke but: What does this really means?

It means that something is like the word ending "-ish". For example if you are talking about a house that has a strange color, looking like yellow, but not really what you would call yellow, you can say the house is 'yellow-ish', meaning 'something not yellow, but looking something like yellow'. (The '-ish' part is the same as in EnglISH, DanISH, SwedISH etc.) Note that using '-ish' in speach is not proper language, it's very casual, a side track to slang. Often used in ironic or sarcastic situations. An absolutely NO in written language, otherwise than in a quote.
