Hi, I found your lesson informative. Thank you so much. I have one question though. You said, I just drink black coffee. Why can't we use the PP form? Isn't it the same as I have just drunk black coffee. Appreciate it.
@GoNaturalEnglishLessons4 жыл бұрын
You are welcome! Happy new year!
@PraetorGames4 жыл бұрын
"I just drink black coffee' means that one either doesn't drink anything but coffee ever, or drinks coffee black without additives, depending on context. 'I have just drank black coffee' means that one has recently consumed coffee. 'I had just drunk black coffee' means that one had consumed coffee in the recent past in relation to another past event.

Just in the "polite" form does have some real meaning. It's like: you could be cautious about how much you eat, but just have as much as you like! And "…just ask you a question": This interaction could be more of a bother, but I want to just ask you question. Things could make more sense than you think. Also…"just…I just…can't even…" And sometimes people would say: almost, but "only just…" Some of those phrases could technically use both, but it's typically one of them. "just a matter of time"(as well as the other combinations)is also common. If only[it were true]…([only]THEN I would be happy, be satisfied, content, etc. or I could [fill in the blank]], or nothing) It's sort of like "That'll be the day…"[when I die? or a momentous, unprecedented day, or just nothing, 'cause it will never be the day, and it's just left open and unstated!] Kinda like "when pigs fly!!!" "…the one…THE ONLYYYYYY…[insert important name here]!!!!!!! It should be to just use/have in case it rains, then it makes sense grammatically but people just use the phrase like that. Not because we're sure that it WILL rain, or for something else, but just in (the)case (that)it rains. You could say "I'm only saying that…" to clarify things or reassure someone of your intent.
