Our family moved to Phoenix in the summer of 1978. The first concert we saw in Arizona that summer was The Rolling Stones in Tucson. Not many photos exist because cameras were considered contraband as you were entering a concert facility. So wielding my high school press credentials, (as a yearbook photogragher no less) I tried to get backstage at several concerts and the only one that that successful was Rush at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in1979. Compton Terrace was named after Bill Compton, who was the programming director at KDKB. 93.3. in the early 70s and was killed in an automobile accident on 48th Street in the Arcadia area. The first concert at the venue with Warren Zevon and the Grateful Dead, and Warren had not stopped drinking yet. Fast forward to the Chandler Compton Terrace and James addiction debuted Lollapalooza. The first lineup included. the Surf punks, Nine inch Nails, Living Color, Bodycount. Siouxsie and the Banshee's and Jane's Addiction. Just to name a few. Now here are three bands. And guess who played tthe warmup acts-- The Scorpions, Aerosmith and Guns and Roses. (Hint-- The Scorpions headlined, believe it or not.) Tempe venues real quick--Dooly's (later the Electric Ballroom} on 1216 E Apache, Chuy's (3 differnet locations around Hayden Square)...wait there used to be an ampitheater about 4 St and Mill (called the Hayden Square Amphitheater) and now it's just a green space.... And of course, the legendary Long Wongs (on Mill), Which is another parking lot. Ohh God, this is depressing.

Not just in the USA but all over the world we have lost many great venues. These were the places where you would hone your live music playing skills as well as see amazing bands and meet real people. More funding is needed so we don't loose anymore of these iconic meetings places.

Graham Central Station wasn’t where Ranch Market is. It was on the other side of the parking lot. The Ranch Market was a home improvement store.

Are you certain? The address matched up to Ranch Market and an employee said they remembered seeing Oingo Boingo by the produce section. And Greg Kihn band by the frozen foods. I could be mistaken. Appreciate the comment.

Hey guys. I’ve been to Mason jar and also I saw the concert by AC/DC and Cheap Trick with Elton John at Compton Terrace by legend city also, I went to legend city when I was a kid I came in second place I name in the new roller coaster so I ended up going on Wallace and Ladmo show, who became friends with. Also, I would wear a yellow string around my wrist to go on most of the rides. Why remember this I have no idea.
