The thought in my mind, “It must have been a major pain to keep filming while one is sick and sailing through rough seas. The Wynns have truly earned our support. Furthermore, any money we send them looks like it will be consumed when they get to the boat yard.

I served as a Sonar Technician aboard a US Navy Knox Class Frigate, the USS Brewton out of Pearl Harbor. These Frigates have a bow mounted sonar, and combined with the single screw, it makes for a rough ride in stormy seas. During my first rough weather event, half the crew were new sailors, and the smell of puke eventually permeated the entire ship, including the forward berthing compartment where I was assigned. The C.O. turned the ship into the whitecaps to help prevent roll. Since we were forward near the bow, we endured an up-and-down high speed elevator type ride, up to the crest of a swell and crashing down into the next trough (repeat, repeat, repeat...). This lasted for a few days. I slept very little and was required to stand watch as was every other Seaman Apprentice. As any Sailor knows, you can't just pull in to port and anchor when in the middle of the Pacific. I have never been sicker in my life! Unexpectedly, after the storm, I earned my 'Sea Legs". From that point on, I never got seasick again... BTW, I noticed most all of the metal parts aboard you vessel are stainless steel. At least you don't have to worry about polishing brass! 1) Knowing and seeing curiosity's history and recent journey (on the hard) and your work on her while in Tonga makes the couple of little problems in the video seem par for her course. 2) Can we talk about video editing skills?!? masterful. 3) A sailor recieves an additional gold star (figuratively) every time he or she makes a difficult pass and you both handled it masterfully. 4) Some gorgeous shots after the storm of what all sailors love about the sea, blue waters, sun out, sails filled, solar getting full sun, autopilot on, and up on the tramp stretching the weary muscles with the wide blue yonder stretching out ahead, epic! 5) Sailing isn't classwork and reading books, it's getting out there and doing it. I think what I like most is you guys are honest about showing what life on a boat can be…. Good, and bad…. Seeing Jason sick, just reminds me that sea sickness is not once, it’s a reoccurring problem. Human vs ocean. Seeing older videos, I see how you guys became seasoned sailors… now you’re in your New HH…it was hard for me to picture the HH as a first boat for a beginner… now I realize you guys aren’t beginners… I guess the biggest con I’m getting is….something is always broken, and hopefully its not life threatening. I run to Home Depot to fix issues… what do you do when you need a tool, a part, and a manual….out on the ocean. I think I might rethink buying a boat. Solo sailing isn’t doable. Ugh I want that lifestyle, but I lack your courage… I envy you guys so much… Be safe.. .keep posting. I know your boat is being worked on for Warranty stuff now, so it will be some time before you ‘splash’…. I am learning survival is based on you being able to deal with current issue, without blowing out your brains… BOAT.
@gonewiththewynns3 ай бұрын
What do you do when you can't run to Home Depot? You keep a spares kit onboard with one of every part that needs routine replacement or is prone to breakage and you keep a good tool kit aboard. And always have duct tape and extra line haha! Beyond that, boaters are a resourceful bunch, and your fellow cruisers are usually very happy to help out or donate parts. They know they might be the next boat needing a hand, so what goes around, comes around. And although remote locations can be the exception, most popular cruising destinations have a chandlery that might have your part or be willing to order it. Sailing for sure isn't for everyone, but don't let being solo be the reason you don't do it. There are plenty of solo sailing channels out there for inspiration! Curious Minion

@@gonewiththewynns Because I’m afraid a catamaran is out my budget range, I find myself looking repeatedly at Endeavor, and Ketch types. As I look thru the amenities I look for water maker, healthy solar (but a moon hull there’s not much space). I’m not afraid to drop 100k into a boat, but in the next day I have keep dropping 5k to get it ready for passage…then it will never leave the yard. I started looking at a lower price 70k so I have 30k to get the boat ready. I want this. I plan to stay within sight of land (for the first year lol… remember this so you rib me later). I see going up and down the Atlantic coast…but it seems you do so much more “motoring” than actual sailing… and at the cost of diesel I’m afraid. It still looks like a rich man’s hobby, but if I can just get there…as long as I can keep it afloat… and me alive lol… be safe thanks for answering Question: The video I just watched older, you were on a “charter boat in Thailand “. @@johnferrier2803 I’d still rather be climbing into the dingy than the life raft - which I would also be tethering to the dingy. I have a number of reasons for this, the main one being: The larger the support boat/raft the easier it is to see when you set off your EPIRB and are waiting for planes to come and spot you in an endless ocean. You can always cut the dingy free later and go it alone with the life raft if necessary.

In my experience not getting seasick is about knowing what will make you seasick and avoiding it. Sounds a bit basic, but after studying the condition I've learned that avoiding four physical and one mental state will greatly reduce the risk. 1. Cold: Most often seasickness is the result of the body shutting down non-essential systems because energy deficiency, and being cold will deplete your energy real quick. 2/3. Thirst/Hunger: It follows that keeping energized BEFORE you lose your appetite is key. For crossings I try to make sure that my crew is well fed before leaving, and that there is easy access to quick carbs 24/7. 4. Tiredness: Obviously once you get drowsy things will go down hill, and unless you can activate yourself at the wheel, nothing will chase the green away from your face as hitting the bunk. 5. Anxiety: Now here's the kicker. If you're the slightest bit uncomfortable about your own safety or the safety of the vessel, getting the sleep you need in a cot that decided it wants to be a rodeo stallion is going to be hard. I've had to go below and bunk with fellow crew members to comfort them to sleep. Not easy if you're the only watch master in board. Hence the importance of having a trustworthy autopilot, and ideally a radar/AIS/radar-alarm. Even better a seaworthy steward who is comfortable going below in all weather to keep things tidy in case it gets a little funky. The slightest smell of diesel or other strong odors can spark a domino puke-fest that will leave the skipper tied to the helm until the crew comes out on the other side. Bottom line is that anything you can do as a captain to increase the comfort and mental well-being off your crew before and during a crossing will pay unbelievable dividends :-) A bit af music in the cockpit, a quick jig to lighten spirits followed by some hot soup can really turn the tide.

very difficult sail and you both deserve a lot of credit for keeping it together. It's so tough when you are sailing in rough conditions and damage occurs. Very happy you made it safe and sound. You deserve a good rest but I suspect you're working hard!!

Been following you for a little while and think this passage has been your most challenging on so many levels -- Yet, together you face every problem, figure out a solution and never, ever give up.

I think you guys are great sailors. You make the right choices. You're both good sorts even when green around the gills. Love your films, hope they never stop!

In addition to both of them looking like Ralph Lauren models, they are genuinely nice and upbeat. Such a pleasure to watch their vlog.

You guys are true vloggers. "It's an emergency, grab the camera!" is not what most people would say and do. Best of luck to you. Love your channel. If you ever make it to the Crystal Coast (Emerald Isle, NC) the beers are on me.

One thought. For a boat that expensive, those windows are a huge disappointment. Given that the main requirement of a boat is to be watertight, both above and below decks, the manufacturer failed miserably in my opinion. I would have second thoughts about buying that boat based on the issues you have had.

What an aventure! Crossing the the pacific with a boat less seaworthy than you would wish for… ! Good to know you made it and have it all repaired, restored and bettered in NZ! Fingers crossed for all the sailing you still have to do!

quite fascinating to see the literal middle of nowhere in the South Pacific. Really appreciate the insight and to be able to live vicariously. glad the boat made it.
