Part of doing a delivery is making the boat right for the owner. A lot of people get into the delivery business not realizing that. Keep at it Wynns. You'll benefit from this when you take delivery of you new boat, which you will also need to make right.

Thanks for filling us in on that - not knowing ANY of the protocol, I would have actually thought the opposite, meaning that if you hire someone to deliver your boat, all of those things should be figured out and it should be in tip-top shape. To me its like transporting a vehicle - it needs to be in running and working order? But it sounds like that isnt the case with boats.

I recall a similar experience when Sailing Doodles (Bobby White) delivered a Beneteau monohull from Vancouver Island to Singapore. The sails had to be replaced. I sure as he'll wouldn't deliver an aircraft or boat unless they were shipshape or airworthy.

When removing the "car" from the mast, you can remove the screws from the small piece of track, but leave the track in place. Then roll the car onto the track and remove them together to hold the ball bearings in the car. Reverse to put the car back on.

Some shakedown issues: 1) The main halyard should be tied to the mainsail's head. Good - It is. 2) The top car should be tied to the mainsail's head just like the others. It is not. It should be, but check with the boat's manufacturer for their recommendation. Note: You mentioned in a previous video the old car "broke out." While you replaced the car, unless you take additional steps, it could happen again. 3) When the boom vang is too taught, particularly when you're close-hauling past optimum, the tension imparted to the leach from the clew to the head can be immense, enough to rip the top car out of its track. I suspect that's what happened. Fix: Reduce tension on the boom vang. 4) Heading up in balanced sails is a sign of close-hauling past optimum. Fix: Sheet out. It's normal for a trimaran to be a bit more sensitive to wind/sail pressure than a catamaran or a monohull. The trick is to avoid going for max performance and instead set both sails at or near optimum, but most importantly, balanced for your apparent wind angle. Pressure on the rudder (and autopilot) should be minimal. Finally, my father's best advice: "Always use a torque wrench." He spent 26 years in aviation maintenance, and always kept 'em flying, safely, so I'm fairly certain he knew what he was talking about. He's the reason I've done all the maintenance on my own vehicles since high school.

It's a square top main. Likely their first time sailing with one. It's designed with that system so the top batten lays flat in the sail bag (it's sewn in at an angle to support the square top). Sounds like they needed an orientation or more skill. Blaming the boat is pretty low, esp. when they're getting paid by the competition (HH).

I think there are other boat options. Check out nauti styles Bering episodes. They are building a Bering 75. It's a steel monohull. Very little movement unlike a cat.

@@rumblechick73 I'm not an expert in any way, but aren't trimarans a lot worse for movement? They motor more like a monohull, but a monohull (sailboat) uses a deep heavy keel to resist roll. They've got a lot of momentum in the roll axis so they're often a lot smoother cutting through lateral waves, while tris use buoyancy to stabilize meaning they actually follow the waves much more aggressively. I've heard that the rapid rolling is even an issue when at anchor since the boat can slap back and forth even while stationary. Any way, that was a terrible sea state for any noob to try to earn their sea legs in, regardless of hull type. Just bad luck.

1:59 The bridge in the background is the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge. Francis and Mary Usina were civil leaders in the St. Augustine area. Just as the bridge spans the Tolomato River to connect the St. Augustine mainland with Vilano and North Beach, so too the Usinas were strong links between the communities. For half a century, Francis skippered the sightseeing vessel, Victory II, on Matanzas Bay, and with his wife Mary, he pioneered in development and improvement of North Beach as St. Augustine expanded to include that area. Francis lived from 1900 to 1973, while Mary lived from 1909 to 1989. The bridge was built in 1995. Nikki's hair looks great curled! And I don't blame her for being excited to spend time with the dog! Seeing Yoshiro nearly drop her toy into the water made me laugh, she's like "Hurry up, I don't have all day!" 😂Yoshiro's just a ball of energy! I also don't blame Nikki for tearing up at the end. This is the first time I've heard about Kara and her story made me tear up too! What bravery to have the will to escape him! So resilient! Absolutely inspiring! What a legend.

They don't have it hooked up to the correct part of the boom, there is an outer point where it is supposed to be lifted from which is behind the dinghy davits. Hence the rope at 11:23 that is used to pull the dinghy into the boat and onto the davits.

Ah, Cape Canaveral. While famous for Kennedy Space Center, it's also a popular cruise port since it's the main port for Disney Cruise Line, founded in 1995 by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner (he's the reason why Disney had a renaissance in the 90s with new parks and mighty successful movies)! The cape's Merritt Island was once home to its own unique bird called the dusky seaside sparrow which went extinct in captivity at WDW in 1987. What happened? NASA wanted to lower the mosquito population around the space center, so they flooded the bird's marshes and their numbers plummeted. Highway construction further destroying their salt marshes didn't help either. Seeing Jason sleeping with Yoshiro warmed my heart. And it's always magical to see wild dolphins! Remember, failure is part of success. In order to succeed, you must make mistakes along the way and learn from them.

The halyard should go through the ring on the top car then to the head of the sail. That holds the top of the sail to the mast and provides tension to keep the flat top fair. The dyneema is just to pull the last few feet of the sail down into the stack pack.

Shakedown can be frustrating but its a necessary evil and the devil is in the details. Tying up a winch holding a line just isn't on and neither is furling a head sail in order to reef the main. Thanks for the tip on using a deck organizer to turn lines into a winch, that's great tip to keep in mind. We bareboat charter often and have gained knowledge on learning/figuring out boats and rigs with issues of either design or equipment/hardware malfunction so we can empathize with you. Always keep in mind, just because "it's" new out of the box it's not a guarantee that it works. Adaptation is the key. Keep the great content coming, Thanks

I think you need to use that top car to pull the head of the sail to the mast. At 17:55 look at the leech, its loose up at the top. Pulling the head in should tension all of that down to the third batten.

Kara, 1st we are so happy you survived that killer. You are a true survivor. Please don’t give up on sailing. I understand that transit looked very rough from the start. For many sailers it takes 2 to 7 days to get their sea legs. Years ago I gave aerobatic sailplane rides in AZ. It seemed to me that middle aged people got sick more often. Kids and old folks rarely got sick. When I was learning how to fly aerobatics I threw up twice. First in a powered airplane then again first time doing aerobatics in a glider. I also got sick on my first halibut fishing charter. Dramamine worked for me, but for others the patches behind the ear or wrist bands work. Out of thousands of students I only had one lady who could not handle any negative g. She would just freak out with fear, if we hit the smallest turbulence. I tried to do a little Humpty dump maneuver to get her used to the feeling and she could not handle that either. This was despite the fact that she really wanted to learn how to fly. I just think you would be really proud of yourself if you got your sea legs. Understand that after a few months of no sailing you may have to go through it again. I know it’s best to look outside at the horizon and if possible get your hands on the controls. Staying below can make it worse. Your husband looked real disappointed he couldn’t continue. I thought they were just dropping you off, but I understand why he got off with you. Take care.

I get this impression this is a shakedown cruise before delivery to the owners. If that's the case, it's normal to have a bunch of things on the boat that need adjusting and tweaking to make them "just right." If that's not the case, Neel has some issues with their boat design that need serious attention. The mast car and the nav error under sail seem like shakedown things, whilst the dinghy lift seems like a design flaw. Unless you're meant to lift the dinghy off to one side of the center hull where there's room between the center hull and ama, then bring it to center once it's high enough to sit in the mount. That's the only thing I can think of.

An update on my previous comment on video with Rico and Victoria........ when I said a small sailboat for the bay, I really meant harbor. I was thinking of a sunfish, or el toro, or FJ, something in the 15ft range. When you told me that your HH jacket was Heely Hanson, I remembered that company and yesterday I was at the Seattle Boat Show and Heely Hanson had a big vendor booth there.

I am 100% sure Kara was Dehydrated From the start...We have found that if you drink plenty of water and or Gatorade this helps Immensely with sea sickness & nausea... we have actually been there done that ...... Next time Kara goes sailing prepare at least 2 days in advance..no meats no greasey foods etc... lots of water Helps with the hydration in the brain which is the culprit fornthese affects Cheers and great sail Fairwinds from the @Captains.chair

Great episode! Excessive rudder trim and weather helm is typically from over sheeting and/or overpowered main. Yes, it can be extreme to the point the A/P can't handle. Easing the main until it luffs then slightly bringing in will greatly reduce this. Ask me how I know! 😂😂😂 Cheers!

Finally, Neel really missed the mark by not flying in their best crew to work out all the issues with the boat after your first episode aired. The dingy set up and the continued rigging problems do not reflect well on them.

Think the line is set wrong, have the same on my Lagoon 42, it goes from tip, to the ring, back to the tip and then down, so it force the top of the sail to the mast. Then the ring also goes all way up 😉

I blew a clutch in the same way you guys did in the Bahamas. I put too much side torque with an electric winch. Learned very quickly you need to use other winches to redirect the line so that doesn't happen. Tough lesson, but ones you won't forget.

Motion sickness is no fun. I have had my own runnings with that thing and I found that the only thing that helped me was Ginger capsules. One taken an hour before the journey starts will help you a lot. I was out with a friend to go fishing and the waves was very heavy and slow, and the boat was rolling a lot. Normally that sea would send me down, but I felt just fine. Kept working and we got a decent catch that day. Finished off by going ashore on a small island and cooked a portion of fish for us on a fire we made from driftwood and dried kelp. My friend brought a pot and we boiled the fish in sea water. The best end to a great day ever!

Try using a boat pole on the eye connection for dinghy lifting and lowering and use your hip for the fulcrum point with pole?

Suzanne was right! I would strongly suggest going to the local hardware store, procuring some black plastic caps and use a dab of silicone to attach them to every trolley eye nut and exposed threads. Unless the company spent the man-hours to carefully round and polish each eye bolt end, they will definitely chafe the lines.

I live in the area and moored out by the Castellio when my parents sailed their floating home from Jacksonville to Daytona Beach. At the time, you could see water lines on houses that live along the Intercoastal from where the water came up during Hurricane Matthew and Irma. I hope you guys had a chance to see Night of Lights while you were in St. Aug and enjoyed the area. Come back and visit St. Aug any time. :)

Hi Kara. If it helps at all my first night sail from S Wales to Dublin Ireland 8 yrs ago i experienced the worst seasickness possible. We still bought a boat ( my wife is the sailor) and sailed it from Europe across to the Caribbean and am now in Marseden Cove NZ. Never got sick again. I’ve heard that at Day 3, those plagued by seasickness often acclimate and are fine. So short sails are brutal, while longer passages allow for the calm AFTER the storm to carryon and enjoy, and hopefully forget how brutal the first two days were! But I’ve also heard that coffee is most definitely one of those trigger foods/drinks, that can upset the stomach of even a seasoned sailor.

This episode was exciting to me. Port Canaveral is my home port. I am a power boater and take my boat out of Canaveral for fishing. Too bad you didn’t get to see a rocket launch. That would’ve been a real treat. I was born in the town where Suz lives, Melbourne. And even though I grew up on the Space Coast I’m still enthralled watching the rockets launch.

As far as ongoing nausea issues, check for Acid Reflux issues, sometimes it's mental and sometimes it's not, which can be helped with diet and medication. Consult your doctors, so good to hear you, Kara! Not your fault! You are a Legend!

What does that dinghy hoist attach to? I've sailed on a Voyage catamaran that stows the dinghy in a similar way - but the hoist goes over a sheave on the end of a boom extension that slides out from the end of the boom. That way the lifting is vertical, then when the dinghy is up high enough the extension is retracted so the dinghy can be lowered straight down. It's a really clever system that works beautifully with no boat gymnastics needed! :)

If you are going to continue to have guests onboard, suggest you get 1 or 2 electronic anti-nausea wrist bands. They run around $125 on Amazon and send an electronic pulse to wrist nerve that interrupts the inner ear to brain feedback loop that causes seasickness. Battery lasts several days, is rechargeable and pulse strength is adjustable.
