4:36 Funny that you say that because, for the third anniversary of my childhood dog’s death, I made a digital painting of her as a memorial. I poured all of my heart into it and I myself was amazed by how beautiful it turned out. I considered it my best piece ever. However, when I posted a speedpaint of it to KZbin, it performed _worse_ than my other videos. I concluded that it was probably because I usually draw fanart of characters who are already loved by many whereas not many people knew my childhood dog other than myself. (In fact, majority of the comments were from family members who knew her.) Edit: Oh, hey! I just did #8! I hadn’t even gotten to the part of the video yet!

I don't think the reason for the less attention on your memorable artpeice was because no-one knew your dog but maybe because of change in your regular uploaded artpieces or maybe because of different taste of your audience that you have. it's not a bad thing ofcourse to change your art time by time . or try posting your artwork on other platform like pinterest of intsa or so I haven't posted much of these but don't get dishearted of you get less attention (unless you want to land a job in a co. or so, gasp IT IS A HEADACHE) DON'T LOSE HOPE!! Learning marketing is something I think I need more help with. I never realized how much the market affects the demand there is for your art, and simply "being good" isn't always enough. I think it's because a lot of artists wanna maintain the total freedom of "doing their own thing", and then end up quitting when they're not getting enough engagement. Learning what's popular, observing what kind of art is in demand and try to get good enough to incorporate those aspects into your own art effectively is a real challenge.

just a little reminder there's nothing wrong with envy as it's an innate feeling that linked to "survival" needs, let's say it's a brain compass of what you lack to keep going for it, so envy is inevitable but you're responsible how you manage it and i think using for our advantage instead of hurting others is the best :)

1- 7:37 "be critical and seek critique". Teachers with experience in this field usually charge for their time, and I'm not sure if I can afford their services. Moreover, when I seek public help, I find that many people are just as lost as I am, and their advice doesn't seem to lead me down the right path. 2- 10:13 "connect with others". I find it difficult to connect with others because I'm an introvert. I've been trying to be more social lately, but I feel ignored in Discord groups. It seems like these groups are already established and only talk among themselves, which makes me feel excluded. I really don't know how to be more social.

2:32 This explains so much! When I post a drawing online, various people (pretty much all younger than me) are like, “OMG THAT’S SO GOOD” yet, when I show the same drawing my mentor (not formally; he’s a good friend who I admire for his art and he sometimes critiques and helps me with mine) who’s 2 years older than me, I’m proud if I get a, “not bad” from him.

As an artist in such an unenjoyable stage of my skills where I am not a beginner but I know that my skills can't keep up with my knowledge, I find your videos quite motivating. For me it feels like a cycle of improvement. One week I hyper focuse on structure, the next week I study contrast, after having to work on every other detail such as countless anatomy studies and artwork analyses, when I try to paint something I realize that the very first thing I studied is my current weakest skill yet again. It's kind of frustrating. But at the end what matters to me is that every time I realize this, I can see major overall improvement anyway which keeps me going.

I think the thing I enjoy the most is learning to recognize how paintings are created/constructed and when I find an artist I like I hunt out any kind of sketch, WIP, or timelapse they've done to understand their process and workflow. Demystifying the composition goes a long way towards converting envy into motivation. I used to feel intimidated and inadequate by artists I aspire to be like but learning to do this has made me much more comfortable in the same space as them, and optimistic that I can get there.

I get discouraged when I see great art. As an adult beginner it makes me think of all the time I wasted growing up, with no hobbies. I compare myself to the younger people and I know it has to stop. I want to keep improving, and advertise my works. I’ve been taking a break from social media to keep me healthier mentally and it’s been good. Other artists are something we just have to get over. Envy has turned to motivation for me before and it’s good when that happens, i shall remember to embrace it. Still though, yeah you’re right, it has been a super hard time with that train of thought. If I could switch off that way of thinking with the push of a button I would, but instead it’s a slow journey of two steps forward, one step back for me.

The chapter on turning envy into motivation is pretty good advice, but when I see good art usually I think "That looks pretty cool!" and move on with my day, rather than say "I'll never get to that level" or the opposite: "I can't wait to be that good". So I guess when I see good art I don't really think how it would apply to me directly.

In my eyes, there’s no such thing as good and bad artists. Whether a piece of art is good or bad is completely subjective. And everyone can always get better at art, but I would never say anyone’s a “bad artist”. It’s all perspective.
@YTartschool
@YTartschool Жыл бұрын
My art as a kid was objectively bad compared to what it is now though. It's not all subjective. A lot of it is for sure, but it's not that simple. Most artists would likely agree, you too, their art now feels "better" to them than it did when they started with no skills. Art skills, just like any skill, get better with deliberate practice and habits. Someone with no skill is not expected to perform in any meaningful way. I couldn't get hired with my 5year old skills, couldn't make a penny selling art, wouldn't get any attention on social media or anyone other than my parents. Most people who call themselves artists want to do something with their art, whether it's a personal or professional achievement. The angle of the video is that there are steps to get there, steps to get meaningfully better and ignoring those steps (while still striving for the same achievement) leads to a dead end most of the time. Most people watching this take their art seriously and I've been teaching long enough to know everyone is doing something (or many things) at their detriment without realizing it. Hopefully these kinds of videos help them realize it so they can improve in an even more meaningful way.

What I want to learn the most is to take criticism in a positive manner instead of getting mad at the critic for cussing my drawing 🤔. it is hard, but what helped me early in my career was differentiating between good and bad feedback. Good critiques will give you suggestions on how to improve and point out things you already knew in the back of your head but dismissed while painting. It's still not fun to read, but it gives you something worthwhile to think about. Bad critiques will just try to be hurtful and in those cases, it's good to imagine the absolute loser who's spending their limited time on earth trying to bring you down when they probably have nothing going on for themselves. Why would you pay any attention to trash like that? Block them and carry on :)

I don't know if this is generally a good thing to put on the list, but always studying and seeking knowledge on how realism works i think is VERY important. Sure, you can make good art and be a good artist without being able to draw a real person or animal, however, as you improve on that path you're still implying the basic structure of how our skeletal and muscle structure works.(just in a stylized way). I think it's very important to observe what is Anatomically correct in your art(and other's art) and what isn't. Seek some realism perspective, without being a realism artist yourself. Your stylized work will improve and still be your own with this knowledge.

"grief, nothing beats it" I was going to say "mitty" from the "made in abyss" but I realized that's also grief... Asuka's death in Evangelion is grief... One that made me cry was "a silent voice" and I don't think that was grief. Also the only thing I can't think of that beats grief is KSI's new song thick of it, I cry scream and cover my ears in horror, that was a horrible experience 😢

I also feel like another way someone can be a bad artist is if they're are being negative about their own art or art abilities towards their friends. For example if you have a friend who is constantly saying "I'll never get better" or "I can't get commissions like you can". Having that negative mindset can effect the person it's being focused on as well as other around them who may end up feeling the same way. Kinda like a link chain of negative emotions and doubt towards their own skill. It can be that person saying it once or constantly saying it over and over whenever they show their art to you or in a open space like discord or other social medias. I just feel we as artists should learn to be more positive about our art and self-worth as an artist and learn not to spread the negativity to others who aspire to reach their goals or make goals for themselves.

My biggest problem ever is to make the leap of fate and post online my art, because I know that I'm too shy and too much of an overthinker to follow competitions, and still too slow with making art and maintain alive an art account on social media.

Somehow these videos are sometimes demotivating for me haha. Guess I'm a "bad artist" because I don't want to do these things 😅 Not sure I like viewing art as good or bad etc.. art is art. Its self expression, its a hobby, its a career, it depends who you are and what you want. So one person's actions as an artist may be "bad" if they were aiming to be a professional artist in an industry, but "good" if they want to draw something they love & just bring themselves joy. That kinda thing. Idk, its all good advice for sure! It just feels a little odd to me. But thats just me by the looks of the rest of the comments lol (No hate to you Marc, your content is awesome! Both art-wise and video tips & tricks wise etc! Love your stuff and your positive attitude. 😁)
