Great review! I agree with your pros and cons; I’ve owned one of these babies for years and they are definitely not the greatest but they are really good. The original cartridge is Ok, but ever since I got a Nagaoka MP-110 I fell in love with it and I haven’t looked back. I also got an AT-3600L to use with old, worn-out records and an Ortofon MK2 DJ for bass-heavy electronic and hip-hop music. Having them mounted on separate head shells makes swapping cartridges a one-minute fun task (unscrew the old one out, screw the new one in, adjust tracking force). I got a rubber mat since I like those the most and they perform well. A great turntable overall 😊

i have the LP120 but only a short time.. however after having basic run of the mill turntables in the late 70's through the 80's when i was a young adult.. those were such crap, i never knew what i was missing.. after having this LP120 and gone through the setup process.. i now fully understand proper proceedure etc and let me tell you.. my records have never sounded better. also kept some of my records from back in the day just because, but had not played in decades.. regardless.. i 100% recommend this turntable.. i love it..

I was gonna get this record player but then I found the Audio-Technica AT-LP5X. The base is more sturdy, and pretty much does most of what the LP 120 can do. It is a little more expensive but I hope it's worth it.🤞 been saving for a while so I hope I made the right choice as far as choosing the turntable I want

I’ve had one for a few months and really like it. it’s solid, like, my niece and nephew were running around while a record was playing and it still tracked smooth. No skips. I even like the Bluetooth on mine as I can stream records out on the deck. I guess it depends what you’re listening to but I think you get a lot of turntable for a low price point.

As always, a nice video there ! ATLP120X is a VERY good Turn table. The stylus picks up the subtle nuances of the music but if the vinyl is old then it would ALSO detect subtle flaws ! Well, I do not possess a high end instrument and the ATLP120X is the highest level that I would probably ascend to - except for minor modifications such as ortofon 2M red. So Audio Technica has done a fantastic job in this regard by bringing out this model. I have a sizable collection of records in excellant condition and I use the ATLP120X for those. The music on good records is VERY enjoyable to listen to. Fortunately, new copies of most of the western pop music as well as western classical are still available. For the large number of USED Vinyl that are NO longer available, and not in such good codition, I would need an ATLP60X as well. Apparently the ATLP60X is robust when it comes to playing used records with scratches - the LP60X has a conical stylus with a slightly higher traching force. It also handles warped records quite easily ! Most vinyl enthusisasts would have a sizable collection of used records since new ones could be prohibitively expensive. One has to balance the pros and cons

I agree completely with your review, especially about the preamp. I opened mine up and bypassed the preamp completely. It definitely made a positive difference in sound quality. I also upgraded the stylus to a Nagaoka MP-110 but that wasn't a huge updrade. I put a Fluance RT85 in another room in my house and that turntable is awesome. I would recommend that over the LP120 easily.

I bought one of these recently. Most of its weight comes from a steel plate attached to the bottom of the chassis (the part the feet attach to), not the plinth proper. So far, I'm happy with it, and I will soon be installing a new old stock Shure M97xE cartridge on it. Edit: Throw out the felt slipmat. It's for DJ use, not HiFi listening. I bought a rubber mat for $9 and it dampens the platter very nicely.

I said so before and I will say it again, what you described in the video is Audio Technica AT-LP140XP, a true successor to the old and original LP120. It has a dampened platter, doesn't have USB nor the internal pre-amp for that matter, and the top plate of the 140, plinth is made from metal. But then again, it costs more than 120, approx 500 USD.

I've had mine for three years. Upgrades includes cork mat and a Audio-Technica VM540ML cartridge. Connected to a vintage Pioneer SX-780 receiver bypassing that internal amp. Being on a limited fixed income it works great for me. I think the biggest improvement came from the VM540ML. It just sounds fuller or richer than the stock cartridge. I do agree with your criticisms. I hate the plastic and platter. That built-in preamp didn't sound good with pair of powered speakers. So I dug out my old Pioneer out of storage.

I own an Audio Technica LP-120xUSB. I agree with Frank that the built in preamp is not all that, and yes, I do use an external one. What I personally like about the LP-120xUSB is that it does what I want it to do. It holds a steady speed while playing an LP.. I have upgraded the cartridge to an Ortofon 2M Red. I'm not one for a felt mat, so I bought a rubber one that has worked out very well for me. I tried a cork mat and I disliked it, it had too many issues with static in the Summer months. The Audio Technica LP-120xUSB is not Audiophile grade, but it is a very respectable turntable.

Came close to buying one last year when I wanted a turntable that coordinated with a classic circa late 1970s receiver that was brushed aluminum and wood trim. In the end, though, I went with a Fluance RT-83 in wood finish, after many months of consideration, but have since upgraded the standard Ortofon Red cartridge to an Audio Technica VM540ML. It's a microline stylus type cartridge. The sound is very detailed and refined, and has really good extension at both ends of the frequency range. Very pleased with the Rt-83 but will likely upgrade the platter to an acrylic platter if or when it goes on sale again. I've also upgraded the RCA cables and run it through an external phono pre-amp despite the vintage receiver having its own phono input/on board preamp.

My LP120 is from 2015, and the only issue I have with it is the cue lever / lowering function is not as slow as it should be. That said, the cork mat I added years ago helps reduce ringing AND raises up the record so the tonearm isn't so down-angled. Recommended for a first (or for me, first in 30 years!) table to get into, or 'back' into vinyl.
@MarkAS56
@MarkAS56 Жыл бұрын
I've had this for a few years now. Like it just fine through a mid 70's receiver and big floor speakers. My biggest negative is the tone arm lever lost much of it's pressure within the first year. I have to carefully drop it by slowly moving the lever from start to finish. It drops heavily to about half way down at first, then i can ease it down the rest of the way.

Great review! One thing I've been looking for and cannot find anywhere is how to adjust tonearm height. While doing my setup routine, cartridge alignment, stylus weight etc., I noticed that my tonearm height was too high. Now, this might be due to replacing the included slip mat with a Fluance rubber slip mat. The older AT-LP120 tables had an adjustment for this. Does the newer AT-LP120XUSB I purchased new in 2024? Thanks in advance.

It's probably the best beginner turntable on the market, but in the end that's all it is - a beginners turntable. These have been made by Hanpin and sold under various brands. I used to have a Reloop RP-2000MK3 for about 10 years and it still ran fine by the time I sold it after upgrading to a Pioneer PLX-1000. The PLX-1000 is also a Hanpin, but based on their flagship model - a lot better than the LP120, but it can't beat the Technics SL-1200G I own now.

The best record I’ve ever found for testing a turntable’s “wow and flutter” performance is Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel’s ‘Dueling Banjos’, from the soundtrack of the 1970s movie ‘Deliverance’. The 7” single won’t work as well because the intro is edited down. The album track begins with several slow notes, sustained for an unusually long time in a pop record. If the intro on the album version sounds flawless, then your turntable has excellent “wow and flutter” performance.

I've had an AT-LP120XUSB with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge for about three years now. I agree with your likes, and dislikes. Sadly, many things in this modern world have way too much plastic in them. I would question the importance of having a built-in pre-amp. Not having a built-in pre-amp would encourage people to get a descent external pre-amp. At the moment, I'm using an external Suca-Audio pre-amp with an upgraded matched pair of JAN 5654W tubes. I do plan to upgrade to a better turntable eventually, but will probably keep the AT-LP120XUSB around for its 78 RPM capabilities. I have a small shellac collection.

I've owned one of these for over 3 years, and I agree with your pros and cons. After experimenting with different platter mats, I've found that silicone rubber mats work best with this model. Definitely upgrade the stylus to a VMN95EN or VMN95ML for better playback. It's super easy to swap out the included stylus with one of these without getting a whole new cartridge. If you can afford to upgrade the cartridge, then go for it. I also recommend a record weight. Another con is that the damping fluid for the tonearm tends to lose its viscosity, so you'll need to refresh it. Fortunately, this is not expensive and you can do it very easily.

The old 120 was much left lacking on performance, filters on preamp board stuff up treble response which I removed after watching Vinyl TV preamp removal clip.The preamp was still retained, only the 4 parts got removed. 2 noisy motor 3 hum pickup 4 tonearm curve off hence cart is twisted in slightly after alignment@@Ern5183

Great review! Good help for those like me that are looking for a first turntable. I have the possibility of buying this AT 120USB an do some good upgrades (as you recommended) or buy a Technics SL1210 from 1999 in good condition. What would you choose? Thanks

I bought a non-USB '120 in June 2007 for $180 including shipping. I use a thick, heavy rubber mat. I totally disconnected the built-in preamp. The cartridge that came with it has never been attached to the tonearm. Overall, it's not a bad product, but it does leave some people wanting.

The PL120 preamp doesn't bottle neck the highs like the USB version but is close to mains transformer causing some hum

Man, I still own the HomemixTT500 DJ Set from 2012 👀. Funny thing is, considering how old and cheap it was for x2 turntables and a mixer (new on Amazon back then all for £125.24), it has tone-arm weight adjustment, removable cartridge head (also fitted with an Audio Technica 3600L cartridge), reverse play, speeds of 33-45-78, and the turntables are also made mostly of plastic, (besides the "aluminium" tone-arm of course). These are belt-drives

I originally was liking to grab one a couple years ago but decided to go with a classic table and just find they are built better and offer semi or full automatic which most of the new tables today do not.

Saw there is an audiophile TT with built in phono preamp. Second model from the bottom, $2200 VPI "Player" TT that has a photo preamp in it! (- defeatable by opening a panel in the back and a jumper. TT also has small headphone jock built-in , marketed as it being an ALL IN ONE). It was on TT reviews on a a YT video from an audio store I had not seen before. They guy from the shop said it he used that at home. PS In the video, the 'shop' highlighted Music Hall MMF 1 as their starter. Would not mind a good direct drive. But would not spend for the top Technics. Hmm.

Your 100% correct I have one and I have the same negative thoughts my version is the earlier version which also has the reputation of the motor cogging. When I parches’t it the reviews raved about it but I felt a bit miss led. it’s ok but not brilliant

I'm really tempted to buy one of these, the only thing thats putting me off is I seen so many videos regarding the anti-skate not working as intended. I noticed a comment below stating they fixed this, but how would I know the model I am buying won't have the anti-skate issue.

I’ve had the original for about 5 years now. Paid £250. Replace with an Ortofon DJ cartridge. Plays perfect. I know there are probs with the anti skate and it’s hard wired with phono but it’s working fine. Really thinking of getting the 140 or 160… I’ll be getting 2.. to DJ with.. can’t afford technics….. ant tips?

Is this a magnet drive platter like the technics 1200? I remember my om old 1200s you could just light the platter straight out, there was nothing holding it in. The huge ring ruming magnetic on the underside is what drove it.

Can the preamp for this turntable still not be bypassed without ripping out the component entirely? I remember this being a major pain point for the last model and prevented me from buying one.

I made some disparaging remarks about the Debut Carbon DC turntable recently! Come to find out, that the issue I was having was not with the turntable, the cables, the pre-amp, the stylus or the sound system. This leads me to believe that it is a power issue, as I had it plugged into a huge power strip with everything else on that same outlet. When I moved it to another room on a different outlet, it sounds great. I know it isn't the sound system either, because everything else sounds great on it. Bottom line, it must be true what they say about the power source on these things! Time for me to upgrade to the better adapter and find a different place to plug it in!

I have the AT-LP120XUSB. The plastic build isn’t an issue for me. I’ve had others made of plastic. That platter ringing is not unusual for many turntables. I greatly reduced that with a rubber mat that many turntables had until recently. I don’t like the modern felt mats. If the onboard preamp doesn’t work out, there are plenty of external preamps available. The one on my AT-LP120XUSB sounds much better than a SONY PS-LX300 that one of my neighbors was throwing out. It works. But, the difference in price and build certainly is ‘the Elephant in the room.’ The preamp and resistance to foot traffic and other vibrations obviously much better with the AT-LP120XUSB.

I have 2 of these & so if you don't want to sink a grand into restoring a Technics 1200 then this is your best bet for plug & play reliability. I have seen this turntable sound as good as a $5000 one simply by changing the stylus with a much more expensive one.

I bought one of those $60 Victrola's. I put on Led Zeppelin II and it skipped in several places. I bought them both from walmart. So, I blamed the vinyl. Someone said that the tone arm may be too light to stay in the groove. They suggested that I tape a penny to the arm. That seemed to have worked. But, I've been unable to spin LZ II again. I guess I can't admit to myself that walmart may sold be bad vinyl. Maybe I'll try it again.

Sure... my top pick would be an Ortofon Blue. If that's too pricey, the Ortofon Red is decent, and you can upgrade the stylus in time to a Blue.

Oh man... so many good ones. My standby recommendations are the Nagaoka MP110 (reasonably priced Japanese cart with a warner sound) or the Ortofon 2M Blue (more neutral sounding, really pulls the music out of the grooves).
