Join Courtney LaPlante, vocalist of Spiritbox, for her latest project - Good For A Girl. This podcast is an inside look at the realities and challenges of being a woman in the music industry, especially the metal scene - which has been male-dominated for a long time and still is today.
Through conversations with Musicians, Radio DJs, Record Executives, and more Courtney explores how their personal experiences of gender inequality influenced and shaped them as they navigated their way along difficult career paths. Because as a woman working in metal, nothing comes easy.
Each episode gives behind-the-scenes insight on how the music industry operates and what life is really like for working musicians. There’s also lots of advice for other women who are struggling to carve out their own path in traditionally male-domainated spaces. With plenty of stories and laughs along the way, Good For A Girl represents a defiant middle finger to the patriarchy.
So join Courtney as she uncovers why each one of her guests are good, for a girl.

"You're good... for a girl", a sentence that should have never existed! Hope your podcast will make more people realize how much gender stereotypes are still very present in the music industry, and also in general. As a metalhead, I sometimes received comments from my friends, such as "you're too cute to listen to that kind of music". Some people see metal as a masculine genre, which is probably one of the reasons why it is still male-dominated, even today.

@KAEFARIK
@KAEFARIK 3 жыл бұрын
The thing is... that the sentence doesn't exist. "Good... for a girl" is a playground slight that children use. Adults couldn't hear this and take it seriously, obviously it holds such little weight in an argument. Even when said in context of masculine activities, competitive strength based sports, or Combat, where women should in all rights ENJOY being excluded - where women SHOULDN'T want to be - anyone saying "You're good, for a girl" can be taken apart rationally. Simply that if a female can perform the function, there is a reason why she can, it's not just her unique qualities and certainly nothing to do with her female gender that makes her good at it - it's that she FUNCTIONS. She DOES it. ... Frankly it sounds like your friends are playing with you, they are surprised by the contrast they see - it's not a criticism. Metal is assertive, hell, LIFE requires MEN to be assertive and MEN have never had the option NOT to be! ... Women have always had the option at least, and many through-out the ages have encouraged young females to stay in the back ranks - to be protected. ... Not to rant I just really hope you understand that this has nothing to do with society discouraging women from achieving their dreams, and nothing at all to do with men denying women into metal based on gender.

I always liked female vocaled metal, but never really found any of it was to my taste until around 2000. Then all of a sudden loads of good stuff to choose from, the best of which quickly became my favourite contemporary bands. With a few exceptions, I never really liked harsh male vocals in metal. The maybe 3 years ago discovered metal with mixed clean and harsh female vocals, and that some of it is almost impossibly good. Wow. I still don’t really understand why, but somehow the right mix of clean and harsh female vocals in metal adds up to so much more than the sum of its parts (Rule of Nines and Blessed Be being perfection to me!). It’s a pity it took some heavy duty delving down KZbin rabbit holes to discover it though. The rock / metal radio station which I listen to every day has only just started playing Spiritbox now (Constance), and I’ve still never heard them play Jinjer. It’s impossible that they’re oblivious to these amazing bands growing very rapidly, so must have been reluctant to play it for some other reason, which I find disappointing. The play plenty of harsh or mixed male vocaled metal, and plenty of clean only female vocaled metal. Despite liking the station a lot in general for the last 16 years, I find myself listening quite a bit less lately because they’ve not been playing the current music I like the most. Courtney, to me what you’re doing is not ‘Good…. for a girl’, and it’s a pity (although not surprising) that others think or even say so. It’s about the best I’ve heard in any new type of music I’ve discovered for quite a few years. I can’t get enough. So gutted I didn’t get to see you in Manchester! I’ve been getting into metal podcasts lately, particularly Robb Flynn’s, so I hope yours will be long, as I like that about Robb’s (great to put on while working). Will they be uploaded to youtube? If not I’ll need to find another way to listen. Thanks.

[LONG UNPOPULAR OPINION WARNING] Courtney, I love Spiritbox and you've become my #1 favorite female metal vocalist over the course of last year. However, it seems like this podcast series will be based on completely false grounds, as in, it's not as if all the metalhead men in the industry are actively gatekeeping against women on purpose to keep them down. There are many famous female metal vocalists that made it on their own solely because of their incredible vocal ability (and a bit of luck, but that's a factor for everyone). You yourself are one such example. If you weren't so incredibly talented as you are, you wouldn't be here today, that's just a fact. The reason why the metal scene is "male dominated" is because the aggressive metal sound, which is associated with adrenaline and violence (not literally, but thematically), is simply not what most girls are interested in. And a large majority of those girls that are interested in metal are not able to do it because they lack the talent or the ability to do it; after all, metal is probably THE most difficult music genre to produce and perform, as I'm sure you know. It's not something that anyone--man or woman--can do, but it just so happens that men have higher affinity for it. Try naming 5 female guitarists or drummers (or even producers or audio engineers) and you'll see what I mean. In contrast to the metal scene, take a look at the mainstream radio music where women are the ones dominating the scene. Why? Because it requires zero musical talent (no knowledge of instruments necessary), zero lyrical ability (the music company writes the lyrics), and close to zero vocal ability (autotune). Also, sex sells, need I say more? Now, I'm not saying girls have no musical talent, but I am saying that mainstream pop music is much, much, MUCH easier (and more profitable) to do than metal, and therefore the bar to the mainstream scene is set that much lower than it is to the metal scene. All you gotta do is be relatively good looking and know the right people (and also be willing go down on them, most likely), which is nothing compared to years and even decades of churning your vocal cords or bleeding your fingers dry on guitar strings only to earn pennies in the end (compared to the mainstream, at least). Anyway, I could rant for much longer, but I hope you'll see what I mean. Though regardless of what I think, I do hope your podcast will take off and reach many people (especially girls) and bring them over to metal. So even if it's not exactly my cup of tea, I do wish you nothing but the best in your podcast endeavors :)

Maybe you should listen to the podcast to hear another perspective, because the rant seems incredibly narrow-minded to be honest. Also, starting the post with "#1 favorite female metal vocalist" is ironically just another way of "...for a girl".
@WarriorWithin111
@WarriorWithin111 3 жыл бұрын
@@Some_Guy_87 How is anything I said narrow-minded? Sure, I don't know every detail of what's going on behind the scenes, but I don't think I'm off the mark when I say that there is no cabal of men actively sabotaging women from getting to the top of the metal game. And what's wrong with acknowledging the biological differences between the sexes? Both men and women have things they excel at and things they fall short at, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that nor does it make one superior to the other. So it's only natural to make a distinction between male and female vocalists, because men have deeper and stronger voices which are suitable to the aggressive metal sound, whereas women have gentler and softer voices which are more suitable for literally any other music genre where screams are not involved. I fail to see how any of that is "narrow-minded".
@Some_Guy_87
@Some_Guy_87 3 жыл бұрын
@@WarriorWithin111 Deconstructing your post a bit: 1. "#1 favorite female metal vocalist" -> This is is in essence saying she's good for a girl. You created an "inferior" category which makes it kind of a back-handed compliment. 2. "I'm not saying girls have no musical talent" and ranting on about how women are only dominant in stuff that doesn't require talent and where they can use sex to get on top - what is your point of this if you are not saying that? This is a mysoginistic as you can get, and I'm even saying that as someone who often is against modern ideas of feminism. 3. You are completely belittling the work of other people by demanding your standards. Even if we take the idols that don't do the actual writing in music, they still have other talents that put them on top of the world. Even if some are more actors than they are musicians, they are still good actors. Not to mention the actual writing, production and stuff that the people in the studio are doing (though your post makes it seem like you are implying these cannot be female) - creating a simple song that makes it big can be just as hard as making a complex prog metal 20 minute odyssey. It's a classical "metal bubble mentality" to not acknowledge achievements in other areas of music.
@WarriorWithin111
@WarriorWithin111 3 жыл бұрын
@@Some_Guy_87 You really wanna do this? Fine. 1. What part of "men and women are biologically different" did you not understand? Where did I say that women are "inferior"? You said that, not me. Stop projecting your own thoughts to other people. All I said was that men are more suitable for the vocals in metal because they produce a much deeper and stronger voice which better fits the aggressive metal sound, but that does not mean that men have the sole exclusive rights in it. It just means that the vibes of the songs are different depending on the vocals. Take the song Constance for example -- it's a masterpiece of a song, and there is no way in hell any man could come close to portraying that feeling the way Courtney did. On the other hand, a song like Holly Roller, which is much more aggressive, was made better (in my opinion) by having Ryo's growls added to it despite Courtney absolutely killing it on that track. You cannot say one song is better than the other, both of them are amazing in their own right as they portray different vibes. 2. This was in regards to women being dominant in the mainstream scene and how the music talent bar is set way higher for the metal scene. How else do you quantify the fact that the men-to-women ratio is so enormously offset in metal music compared to mainstream? It is simply much easier to do and succeed in pop, than is in metal. I should maybe have mentioned that this applies to men in the mainstream as well. That doesn't necessarily relates to women's lack in musical talent, rather it is a reflection of how few women even listen to metal, because the aggressive sound simply does not appeal to most of them. How is that misogynistic? 3. I'm not "demanding" any standards of anyone, I just tell it like I see it. Are you aware that pretty much every single pop song in the last few decades was written and produced by a handful of music companies? That's why they call it the music "industry", because the songs are dished out in a factory line-like fashion. All the "artist" has to do is show up in the studio at a scheduled date and sing the prepared lyrics written on a piece of paper. I can't say this applies to all mainstream people, but it's definitely true for the large majority. Your claim that a 3 minute pop song (which no one will remember after a year) can take as much to make as a 20 minute prog metal song is ridiculous, I'm sorry to say. And I do very much have respect to other music genres; I don't listen exclusively metal. What I have no respect for is people who claim to "struggle" while rolling in their $millions across several mansions they own, despite being talentless hacks. Not to mention the absolute fakeness they exude by being more plastic than human, that's what I have no respect for.

"The realities and challenges of being a woman in the music industry, especially the metal scene." Prove it. Cite your data. Define what metrics you use to measure "challenge of being a woman in the music industry, especially the metal scene", as well as what values those metrics would need to have to make you consider this gender inequality resolved. This is just a publicity stunt.
